Been using Airbnb for years and was always very happy. On May 24 I made a reservation for a 2br place in Seattle WA for June 20 to 23. When I arrived to Seattle, about 10 minutes before my checkin time I got a text from the host that the reservation is canceled because the house is flooded. We contacted Airbnb in a panic to see what could be done.
Basically they were telling us to choose another place if possible and that they would apply the money paid for the canceled place to the new place. We were not able to find a place for the same price, all the available places were much more expensive. Airbnb however didn't care, they expected us to pay the difference. After spending hours on the phone with them our case handler set out to help us find a different place. After a long while more she ended up find a place that was in the same area and 2br as well, it was $20 more. The only problem was that it turned out to be the exact same place that had canceled on us, they had just forgotten to remove the listing. We were so tired and frustrated that we checked in to a motel. The next morning we called them again and they finally agreed to pay $150 towards our much more expensive motel bill. Bottom line we had to spend $300 more on our motel. Even the $150 they said they would pay, they didn't. Bottom line, don't think you have any rights if you pay in full to reserve a place 30 days ahead of time and they end up canceling on you; you are basically out of luck at that point. Thankfully we had some money to pay for the motel, otherwise we would have had to sleep in the street...
