I have been around to the different hospitals in the area over the years and I find that Shawnee Mission Medical Center works hard to make visitors and patients comfortable. They have been a long-standing service in the community, along with taking care of patients, they also have programs for community members - child birth, how to introduce your dog to a new baby, smoking cessation, CPR, first aid, diabetes support group, even a fitness program for those that have had cardiac and/or pulmonary event and want to learn how to maintain a long-term wellness program for themselves. They also donate quite a bit back to the community. They work with local health agencies to help improve the overall health of the community. They provide funding to Overland Park Farmers' Market along with other events and programs. I went through their bariatric program and the care I received was outstanding. The medical staff continue to follow-up with me even 5 years after the surgery. I've had other procedures at this hospital and I've always had wonderful service. The rooms are clean and comfortable and the staff are not so backed up that I never see them. Every visit to KU, I've felt herded through like cattle. The medical staff get so overwhelmed it ends up stressing me out. I've visited Olathe Medical Emergency Department for a serious issue that was causing intense pain and was risking my health. The nurse practitioner that took care of me had no qualms putting me in situations where I was caused more pain like asking me to walk out into the hallway around other patients to look at an xray that she could have held up to the light in the room. When she was doing a procedure that would cause anyone intense pain, she told me to be quiet when I was moaning in pain. I did not visit for pain relief, I visited to fix the problem. Not really the attitude I need from my emergency room visit. I've never had an issue like this with SMMC, they are considerate of my privacy and my pain.
