I work as a cycle courier in the area, when my brake cable snapped I came in to buy a replacement to carry on my shift. I purchased the rather expensive cable and asked if I could borrow the guys cable cutters to fit it and carry on working (the gentleman was wearing nitrile gloves and in the process of working on a bike, there's no way he doesn't have cable cutters).
They refused to let me use them for the whole 1 second it would have taken, meaning I had to go home where I have spare brake cables anyway. Bike shops have always been nice places in my experience, cyclists looking out for each other as bicycles are definitely fickle and require more or less constant service to run smoothly. But looking around at the poor (and expensive) selection, it dawned on me that this is not a bike shop. But merely a shop, which happens to sell bikes.
