This review is meant more for the staff of ACLU Florida (Miami-Dade) in particular. I was an intern at ACLU which all internships are unpaid. I m writing to inform students at any school in Florida (FIU, UM, FSU, UF) to not take an internship here. The internship experience won t give you an insiders perspective of ACLU and they will just give you busy work. In addition I was given a negative reference from Layssa Zamora who works/worked with interns at the time and it affected my job hunt after I graduated with my BA. As a young graduate having to explain to employers that I left an unpaid internship early due to health and other personal reasons was both embarrassing and could have tarnished my future. I wasn t told that I would receive a negative reference and this individual held a grudge because I left the organization a couple weeks early (due to healthy/family emergencies). If you re going to do an internship do one that will either pay or that will give you more insight into the industry. Too many organizations are looking to take advantage of young minorities. ACLU will not pay you for your services and as you can see they may even leave you a negative reference or not give a recommendation at all while you work hard and spend time and money at their organization. ACLU claims to fight for human rights but they don t treat their interns respectfully. I ve also heard this from other interns in various ACLU chapters. If you re studying international affairs, political science, or law try The Washington Center which will give you a first hand experience in Washington DC or try a more reputable organization. Thank you.
