Although I have no complaints about the cost of service, RP&L is a clear example of why monopolies are an awful thing. I had to go to the office to sign up for service at the house I just bought instead of doing it over the phone as with EVERY other utility. The wait was ridiculous. There were 6 people in front of me, and they had only one window open to serve everyone. I waited 45 minutes before I was able to see anyone, only to find out that I needed ID and signature from all adults living at the house, so I had to go home and get my girlfriend and bring her down. When we got back, there were another 6 or 7 people in front of us leading to another 45 minute wait. I only wish I had an option to get electric service from another company.
