The Royal Library of Alexandria was the first and ...

The Royal Library of Alexandria was the first and greatest library known in history and it remained the largest library of its time. The Library of Alexandria was established by the successors of Alexander the Great more than two thousand years ago to include the largest collection of books in the ancient world, which at that time reached 700 thousand volumes, including the works of Homer and the library Aristotle.

Ptolemy I ordered its construction in 330 BC, and it was spent lavishly on it during the reign of Ptolemy II, as he expanded it and added annexes to it. The library contained a huge number of books and manuscripts reaching 700,000 volumes.
