Chris Schwarten Review of Festival Republic
The absolute worst gig I ve ever been to was Queen...
The absolute worst gig I ve ever been to was Queens of the Stoneage at Finsbury Park. It was the worst organised event I have ever witnessed. I treated myself to a VIP package which cost close to 100 pounds. What I got for my money was the joy of standing around with hundreds of other people in a patch of dead grass with a handful of chairs, and the benefit of only having to queue for an hour an a half to get a beer. Which admittedly was a lot less than the three hours other people experienced. Outside of the well-documented drinks queue debarcle, just getting in was painful in itself. Was strictly told I had to go to one of two box office windows. After lining up in one for a good 15 mins, the woman in charge of that window told me I needed to go to the other one. So lining up behind the other one, I had to wait another half hour. The reason being I was behind a group of four, and they needed to get tickets printed out. Obviously it pushed them to their limits to have to print out four tickets. I ended up giving up after a half hour and tried another empty window, which apparently was all good, all along. When I finally got in, I encountered similar problems when asking staff the location of amenities on the grounds and the VIP area. Flat out getting straight answers from anyone. Clearly the left hand doesn t know what the right is doing with these guys. That s not to mention barely being able to hear the bands, even somewhat close up to the stage. People were shushing each other so we could hear the music. However, I have kept the special souvenir ticket I got with my VIP pass, so I can always remember the worst gig of my life. It s left me with bad memories of (half) seeing bands I otherwise love, which is a shame. Not sure I ll bother with another Queens gig, and certainly won t be going to another Festival Republic run event again. I will however continue tell every single gig-going person I know how horrible the experience was so hopefully they all too think better of wasting their money on another oversold, underorganised event.
