Founded in 1876 Beringer Vineyards is one of the oldest Napa Valley wineries in California and even prides itself on being the oldest in operation. It was the first to reopen in 1934 after prohibition and also the first to be opened to the public.
Coming from Mainz in Germany in 1868, Jacob and Frederick Beringer first settled in New York before learning that the rocky hills and the fertile Napa Valley looked like Germany. So they bought a hundred hectares (250 acres) there in 1875 and created their vineyard. Very quickly, they distinguished themselves by the quality of their wines and won numerous distinctions in the United States (San Francisco 1887, 1893), Dublin (1892) and Paris (1889, 1900).
Beringer offers several tours and several tasting formats, whether in the historic Rhine house or in the old cellar located just behind the old house. The tasting highlights Cabernet Sauvignon whether from the Howel Mountain or elsewhere, but above all the flagship vintage, the Private Reserve (nice 2014).
