Attended a business dinner with a group of 15. We ...

Attended a business dinner with a group of 15. We had a reservation for 7:15 and were promptly seated. The restaurant was perhaps 2/3rds full at that time. Initially the service was attentive but somewhat slow as there was only one person serving the group. Beverages, and orders were taken. Appetizers and salads were served. And then nothing... we were finally served our meals at 9:40 PM along with apologies. At this time there were only six other tables still seated and nearly all of them were in the process of leaving. When we finished eating the waiter began clearing the table and we asked for the check. Several minutes passed without the check and we asked again and were told that they were going to give us dessert to make up for the slow service. Two issues... we did not have the time to wait and we didn't want the dessert. Ten minutes pass and they bring three large pieces of cake (for 15 ... actually 14 people as one of the group had to leave before the meals arrived). Finally the check arrives and the manager is smiling letting us know the dessert was comped as well as one of the dinners (the meal for the gentlemen that had to leave before the meals were served). He stood there assuming that this magnanimous gesture was going to be warmly received. Sadly, at 10:00 PM we/I were no longer in a mood to appreciate that the cake they were going to throw away was going to make up for a 2+ hour wait. And as we were a large group there was an 18% gratuity fee included. I accept that this is NYC, but the service and smug attitude were a bit more than should be accepted.
