Thomas Steindal Review of Grand Hotel Continenal

Are you looking for a nice and relaxing beach where you can enjoy a cold beer and some good atmosphere? Don't come here, go somewhere else.
The beach itself is great, shallow water with pure sand and no pebbles, lifeguards on duty. However, the beach regulations are hilarious and they are strictly enforced. For example, if you hang your towel to dry under your umbrella, they will tell you to take it down. I have no idea why. The beach rules prohibits eating at the beach, playing ball or using any beach toys, you can't drink from glass bottles, you have to sit facing away from the ocean in uncomfortable beach chairs and so on. You can rent a sun lounger (the types you can lay on) for 10 EUR or so, but it's quite a process. They have to go to a shed and find one, but you're not likely to get close to the ocean, and if you turn it to face the ocean they will probably tell you to turn it back around. You can use sun loungers without an umbrella for free, but you have to go to a designated area in the center of the beach where they are clustered together, and you can't remove them from that spot. People approach you frequently to sell all sorts of junk like fake sunglasses, but they promptly walk away if you say no.
The same regulatory nightmare goes for the pool. Previously they enforced the use of swim caps in order to access the pool (read previous reviews), but they didn't enforce that on anyone when we visited. There's just no atmosphere anywhere, you're not allowed to enjoy yourself. The beach closes down after 7 or 8 PM and you can't really access it. Really weird place, probably alright if you like having it quiet.
As for the hotel, we bought an upgraded room with a balcony,. The decor and the entire hotel is dated. Our bathroom was refurbished and decent, but the bed was somewhat hard, and the room (or rather the air condition) smelled like smoke from the 1970's. The air condition worked properly though. The balcony didn't even have a small table, which is ridiculous, and they use transparent tarps to separate the balconies, so you could see straight through to the neighbouring balcony. Other than that, cleaning was decent, there's a minibar, room service, takes about 20-25 minutes from Pisa (or the airport) with a taxi, approximately 35-40 EUR one way.
