Y Rue Review of Sugar Bay Resort and Spa

Where do I begin....let me start by saying I have never stayed at a Dreams Resort, so I did not have any expectations. I traveled with a large group of about 100 people (the largest the hotel has had since opening in December) and it was CLEAR they were not prepared. Upon arriving to the hotel and checking into our room we were not happy. My hotel room had dead bugs and old urine stains on the toilet and the lid. A few of my other travel companions were given keys to rooms that people were already staying in, their personal belongings were everywhere (talk about security issue). In some of the other rooms the AC was not working. We went to the lobby to discuss our concerns with the hotel staff. Needless to say the hotel staff is NOT accommodating at all, they gave us a hard time about switching our rooms. The first person (Natalie) claimed that they were completely booked and didn't have any more rooms. Being an avid traveler, I knew not to take her word for it. I had to speak to 2 more people to get our rooms switched, which is ridiculous for the thousands of dollars we paid. Finally, we were able to check in our rooms.
After addressing this issue, we headed down to the pool area to get some food after a looong day of traveling. NOPE! That wasn't happening b/c the restaurants closes at like 4pm and reopens at 6pm. The cooking staff was rude about it too " NO WE CLOSED", the lady yelled. I went to speak to the manager and he said that they were open. He walked over to see what the problem was...and just as rude as the cooking staff was to us, they were just as rude to him. Telling him "NO WE CLOSED EARLY". All the manager was able to say was that he didn't know they were closing early. This goes for all the restaurants. They all close early, reopen, and close around 10pm. Although the resort is all inclusive, you will have to time your travel and island activities around the restaurants if you plan on eating. Also, they did not restock the rooms with alcohol as they claimed on the website.
The BIGGEST issue came on Sunday, May 24, 2015. After putting a "Do Not Disturb" sign on my room (b/c the maids were leaving the doors open, allowing misquotes to take over my room) the hotel staff saw it fitting to enter my room and place a letter on my bed despite my request. This letter stated "that the hotel will have a power outage between 1:30am and 4:30am to allow for system upgrades to the electric system". WHAT?!?! I was appalled. How can a hotel decide to have a power outage Memorial Weekend, with a booked hotel full of guests? We are in the tropics, its sweltering, and this was going to affect the AC, lights, water...everything. I went to the service desk to inquire why..the only response I got was "Sorry, this is an unavoidable power outage, we have to upgrade the system and we thought that 1:00am - 4:00am would be the best time". I asked him did they take a survey, how did they come to this conclusion? What guest wants to be hot and trying to sleep? Why would management make this decision on a holiday weekend with a booked hotel? More so, why weren't we informed of this at check in on Thursday. We were given notice at 8pm (5 hours before everything was shutting down), I was livid! The hotel staff didn't care at all. They didn't offer to comp our room or even extend our check out time. I told them they should change the resort name to NIGHTMARES! In my opinion, this resort is THIRSTY for money. They opened to soon, as they are still under construction. They need to close down until they have renovated the entire place and send down the "Dream Team" to get that fiasco of a hotel staff together. I thought team work, was suppose to make the dream work...but it's not working for Sugar Bay. I wish I could rate the hotel a negative 1! I will never stay at another Dream Resort. This was my first and last.
