Phil Richards Review of Shakespeare's Globe

My wife and I recently visited our local cinema to see a production of Midsummer Nights Dream, from the Globe. As I know nothing about the play I expected, as would be normal in the theatre, for the characters to be introduced in some way, the scene set, etc. The opening scenes were incomprehensible and appeared to be some sort of a fight, impossible to understand, then after a while actors began to appear in strange costumes, I now know these to have been the King and Queen of the fairies but only because of research carried out later. A character called Bottom suddenly appeared wearing a donkeys head, no explanation for it was given, I could go on and on. Add to this the way in which the main characters spoke at great speed in a strangely forced and shoutty manner so that the dialogue was largely impossible to follow and you may begin to understand why we left at the interval. I wonder if anyone involved in the production could offer some explanation.
