The website advertised King Lear, which one can reasonably assume to be a faithful, traditional performance of the play when staged at Shakespeare's Globe. Sadly, it was not. Pre-Roman Britain portrayed by actors in hoodies wearing Dr Martens! Had it been advertised as a modernisation, I would not have booked, and feel very cheated. When I raised this (both on site and through the complaint's process), the staff were dismissive and haughty. There was not even an apology, and they allege that they can't advertise their performances correctly as they don't know what will be performed until the curtain rises. Utter nonsense. I will not be returning.
For anyone who enjoys Shakespeare, avoid the Globe and anything "directed" by Nancy Meckler!
