I was taken to UVRMC to deliver my baby when my midwife felt I was in need of hospital attention. The labor and delivery nurses and staff were phenomenal. All of the crap came after I had my son. We had a specific birthing plan and only wanted certain tests done on the baby following birth. The nurses in the postpartum ward were very argumentative about whether we were "allowed" to deny tests even though we had signed all of the waivers. The nurses weren't very polite and would take the baby away for extended periods of time even though we asked for him to be with us as much as possible. Sometimes he would be gone for hours and when we'd ask when he'd be brought back into our room they would just tell us they would go check then be gone for another hour before returning without him. We were also banned from holding him outside of our bedroom. He had to stay in his rolling bassinet if we were to leave the room. The pediatrician was also very unhelpful. He refused to let us take the baby home until his blood sugar would read 60. This measurement was only to be taken right before his feeding (which is when his blood sugar would be at its lowest anyways) and if you're thinking that this was justified, keep in mind that the baby's blood sugar level was registering in the high 50's. We're talking 1 to 2 points short time after time. Finally, the food was absolutely repulsive. After two meals that were enough to make me sick, I decided to order a turkey sandwich. I mean, how can someone mess up a turkey sandwich, right? Well they proved me wrong that's for sure. I couldn't finish half of it. Overall our entire experience was terrible. The labor and delivery ward was amazing, but outside of that it was a very, very negative environment and made it very difficult to enjoy my first couple days with my new baby.
