When the Midland Railway came south to London, the transport network that had hitherto served the manufacturing powerhouse of the industrial revolution wanted to make a statement. St. Pancras was and is still that declaration. "Look what we can do, what we can afford to spend, how high are our aspirations!" The fantastical high Gothic revival hotel and soaring train shed have been given a refreshing new lease of life. Inspired by the imagination and love of John Betjeman's restoration campaign which saved it from the wrecking ball, we still have this jewel in our architectural heritage, reminding us how good - how great - we can be.
