On the positive side, the Homestead is a lovely historical building on an absolutely beautiful property. The golf courses are stunning and very well maintained, as are the pools and the stables. Unfortunately, when I actually needed help during my stay, the staff was a total disappointment.

I booked a mountain bike rental on one of the mornings, and my husband and I took the shuttle up to the trailhead. The staff at the bike rental area were helpful, sizing our bikes and fitting us with helmets. The employee who sent us on our way mentioned that some of the trail areas might be "a little" rough - a few down trees perhaps due to storms. We started down the trail and realized about 10 minutes in that it wasn't going to be a little rough - it was going to be downright dangerous. Deep ruts, mud, sliding rocks, wet leaves. Perhaps if I had been wearing full padding and gear this would have been acceptable, but for a leisurely vacation ride? Absolutely not. Several of the trail signs also seemed to be down, leaving us to figure out how to get from one messy area of the trail to another. To its credit, where the trail wasn't completely torn to shreds (for about half a mile or so in the middle of the ride) it was lovely, with well packed gravel and great scenery. However by the time we got to the main building again, I had had several near misses, branches in spokes, bad slides, and my legs were cut very badly. If I had gotten prompt care and service I would have just considered this an adventure and been done with it, but it actually gets worse.

I went to the front desk and asked for a first aid kit, and some bandages. At this time there was blood running down the back of my leg and literally pooling in one of my shoes. It was clearly visible in addition to many cuts and bruises. The front desk attendant seemed dubious that I was even a guest, although when I assured her that I was staying there, she didn't ask for my room number or verify it. What's more, she didn't have a first aid kit, peroxide or anything else I asked for! Instead, she looked very blank and asked one of the young men standing nearby to check at the concierge. He came back (about 10 minutes later?!) and said that no, sorry, since "so many people had been having bike accidents(!) they were totally out" of all first aid supplies. The young lady at the desk then offered to call security, which I took her up on since I hadn't packed anything for wound care. I then had to stand on the fancy carpet, bleeding, for twenty full minutes. She said that I could sit down on the expensive looking ivory plush chair behind me, but I didn't feel comfortable ruining the upholstery. After standing, bleeding for 20 minutes in front of the desk while being studiously ignored by the two attendants (I suppose since I was "taken care" of), I left. Security NEVER showed up. I never got a first aid kit. My husband ended up driving to the nearest CVS about 30 minutes away to get me some first aid.

I can hardly blame the young people at the desk for what happened. It's 100% clear that they had no training on how to behave in a health related situation. It is completely unacceptable, however, to leave someone who is bleeding and may be more severely injured standing on your carpet for 30+ total minutes, with no medical care or first aid. Homestead charges a lot for supposed conveniences - resort fees, add on charges, etc etc. But I don't care about "Tea" or tours when I'm legitimately injured and need immediate care. All the fancy cups and maid service in the world can't compensate for the level of unprofessional treatment that I received here. I surely will not return.
