Year Up Bay Area: Launching Careers, Powering Business, and Building Community
Year Up Bay Area is a non-profit organization that aims to close the opportunity divide by providing young adults with the skills, experience, and support they need to launch successful careers. The organization was founded in 2000 by Gerald Chertavian in Boston and has since expanded to 28 cities across the United States.
The Bay Area chapter of Year Up was established in 2008 and has been serving young adults from San Francisco, Oakland, San Jose, and other surrounding areas ever since. The program is designed for individuals between the ages of 18-24 who have a high school diploma or GED but face barriers to employment such as lack of access to education or job training.
Year Up Bay Area offers a one-year intensive training program that combines hands-on skill development with professional coaching and mentorship. The program is divided into two phases: learning and internship. During the first six months of the program (the learning phase), students attend classes at Year Up's campus where they learn technical skills such as coding, data analysis, project management as well as soft skills like communication, teamwork, time management etc.
In addition to classroom instruction students also receive individualized coaching from their mentors who help them set goals for their personal growth and career development. After completing six months of classroom instruction students move on to an internship where they gain real-world work experience at top companies like Salesforce.com Inc., Google LLC., Facebook Inc., LinkedIn Corp., etc.
The internships are paid positions that last for six months during which time students work alongside industry professionals gaining valuable experience while also earning money which helps them cover their living expenses during this period.
One unique aspect of Year Up's model is its focus on building community among its participants. Students are encouraged to form relationships with each other through group activities like team-building exercises or community service projects which help foster a sense of belonging among participants who may come from different backgrounds but share similar aspirations for success.
Year Up Bay Area has had tremendous success in helping young adults launch successful careers after completing its program. According to its website "85% percent of graduates are employed or attending college within four months" after completing the program while "the average starting salary for graduates is $42k/year".
In addition to providing valuable job training services Year Up Bay Area also partners with local businesses through its Corporate Partnership Program (CPP). This initiative allows companies looking for skilled workers access Year-Up's pool of talented graduates while also giving back by supporting an organization dedicated towards closing the opportunity divide.
