The location and setup is very inviting. I must have walked past it working in the city hundreds of times. There is lots of space with heaters which is nice too.
I came in for a quick snack between appointments and because it was happy hour I was given another one complimentary. The chicken was tasty and crusty while still succulent. The crumbed olives were excellent and both came with a small salad. The staff were very professional and surprisingly polite and accommodating; never an attitude because I was only having a small feed. Probably the best service I've received in Melbourne. One really good way to start the evening and would be quite a nice place to relax with time too.
This place is great on a Friday night. It is packed full of good looking professionals from the nearby consultancies. The bar has a large balcony with transparent roof top.
Great breakfast options. Go the fat-free omelette for a delicious start to the day. After work drinks gets very crowded and usually the same crew which gets a bit boring. However they put on free finger food which is good for the punters and good for business.
Always buzzing after work, but can become painfully busy. Open for breakfast and the food is good, but still smells of the booze from the night before.
Great Place for drinks and snack food is very good and reasonably priced for city location. Staff are friendly too. Would definitely go back next time I'm in the CBD.
Held a work function on the balcony for 70 clients. The weather was VERY hot, but the staff were very accommodating understanding and the service was excellent. Drinks and food were great and the partially undercover balcony area was a real hit. We will definitely use this venue again.
DJ was a disgrace, verbally and then physically attacking people. Management should do themselves a favour and sack this guy. He makes what could be a good place to visit a very unsafe one.

I really don t understand the appeal. It s rammed full of young professionals but lacking good customer service and honesty. All signs out the front say $6 pints of beer, craft beer especially included. But in ordering a very average stone & wood, I was surprised that but cost $12.50! Please don t advertise god deals if they are a blatant lie. The blonde staff member was so rude and indifferent, I felt like asking why she would bother turning up to work. Don t bother
We had our company function at Slate and it was such a success. Their hard work and dedication meant that everyone had the most amazing evening. It was so well organised, yet felt so relaxed. The team at Slate have really offered an excellent service throughout - they were very welcoming and helpful throughout the whole process. The settings were just beautiful. The food and wine were simply delicious. In short, it was a FLAWLESS night and all thanks to Slate's excellent team. A special thank you to Alex, Cameron, Craig and Rina plus all the staff on the night ... you really were the perfect hosts at a perfect venue! We will no doubt be back. Highly recommended!

Attended as part of a work Christmas Party - we had the upstairs area to ourselves. Beautiful atmosphere tucked away off the main road. Drinks and food good also. Toilets a bit different (boys and girls all in one) and these are shared with the rest of the bar - but that s no big deal.
Great food, great service, great ambiance. Great place to sit back and relax if its just for a few cheeky beers after work or a catch up dinner with friends.
Arrived in time for weekday happy hour on the roof/top level: $5 spirits, house wine, $6 tap beer. Would have made my night if there were happy hour cocktail options. A busy after work spot in an otherwise quiet little group of shops. Good atmosphere but music a bit loud inside to be able to hear conversation. Would stop in again.
I recently had lunch here and ordered a burger. The chips were awful and cold. The burger was a bit cold too but the taste was ok. Overall this place used to be better and now it's just OK
I went in an ordered a rum and coke. Because I was a girl they assumed I wanted white rum and didn't clarify what type of rum. After finding other places they did not understand 'bundy and Coke it was just easier to say rum. Aside from the staff it is a nice bar, it has an upstairs area and plenty of room for a chat. The only time I tried food here I have had a few drinks before hand so don't recall it.
The place is excellent, staff is attentive and friendly. They came to us thrice, once to let us know the specials for the day, to take down the orders and then to check if we are enjoying or not. :) the 20 dollar drinks cum lunch combo is really good. Loved the cheeseburger, it was so juicy and yummy.. Pretty heavy though. Ambience is quite good. Highly recommended.
We come here every time we visit Melbourne. Service is quick and efficient, water is bought to the table with out asking and coffee orders taken while you check the menu. I had The Hulk this time - smashed avocado, whipped goats cheese, lime, jalapeno, Pomegranate and cherry tomatoes. Only thing for me was way too many jalapeno's and I like them! I just took a few off my serving. Our Vegan friend just tailermade himself a plate made up of sides and his requests were no problem. My friend had the corn fritters with with poached eggs, grilled haloumi and crushed avocado which he also enjoyed. Staff friendly and efficient and food good. Will be back again on next visit to Melbourne.
Went for a late lunch today. Food was ok .. I ordered the burger and my friend had the falafel. I asked to send the fries back as they were undercooked and that reasonable requrst seemed to change the demeanor of the staff. The service after that was incredibly poor - they were reluctant to clear the table and serve fresh drinks. I had to physically get up and go and check on why my glass of wine was taking so long to arrive. The waitresses seem more concerned with looking good rather than being good at their job. Bad attitude all round - to top off the negative experience we were ignored again at the bar while we were waiting to pay! We won't be going back & I wouldn't recommend it.
Food was great but the service was not good. So be prepared to wait for long, maybe they'll run out of burgers and can't accommodate changes such as adding an egg to a burger. But eventually when the food comes out, it is delicious!
Slate Restaurant....where do I start! From the moment I walked in you feel a welcoming atmosphere and vibe. The staff are very attentive and you can see they love the work they do. The beer is really good and you can tell by the taste they take good care of the quality! The food was excellent and very tasty! It s simple, I really recommend this place it s faultless! Really great atmosphere and music especially upstairs. If you work in the area perfect place to come for Friday drinks after work. Happy is $5 basic spirits which is awesome - only downside is happy hour is only from 4-6pm. If it lasted til 8 it would be waaaaaay better. It can great very crowded during happy hour so if you re a big group best to book a table.
Great Bar and Restaurant. Been here a few times for lunch which is a very well presented and high standard of food. At the evening it's more got a bar vibe and has a very good happy hour. Highly recommend.
I have just had my 30th birthday at Slate bar and was very happy with the venue. Staff were extremely friendly and accommodating. Highly recommended for any events.
We came here for a team lunch and most people already pre-ordered. I was a last minute addition but they took my order and the food arrived the same time as everyone else's, so I really appreciated that.
My gnocchi with veal ragu was tasty but the gnocchi texture was like powdery marshmallow and quite distracting. My colleagues also rated their meals at 3 out of 5.
Lively vibes to enjoy a meal and happy hour in modern but classy decor. Service was friendly but perhaps too efficient after we finished eating - one colleague joked maybe they've run out of crockery... There was also a 9 cent charge for pre-ordering, which in my opinion is a bit petty. Melbourne's gastronomic scene is highly competitive so this has room for improvement.
Nice place with roof top seating area. Good food but limited choices for vegetarians. Service was good and quick for a weekday lunch. Great choice of wines on the menu.
Gets very crowded towards the end of the week, really corporate atmosphere. Drinks list is comprehensive if on the expensive side. Free snacks are a fantastic idea though!
