Terrible service. And they told me they had no more pierogis but they served them to the table next to me who got there after us. Also they didn't tell me they didn't gave my food until they brought my friends foods which pissed me off. Cuz by the time my food came everyone was done eating. Food took long and the waiter never checked up on us. We had to flag somebody down for more water. They were non-apologetic about their mistakes

They need to get it together

The people who lived in the neighborhood seemed happy, but we were not. First we told the waiter of my allergy to milk (breakout in hives and swell up). We asked if the pierogies had any milk in them. He responded in perfect English that they had beef, so they couldn't have milk. We didn't understand, so we tried to clarify asking about the potato pierogies, and he responded with a similar answer, they can't have milk, because they have beef. We repeated ourselves, trying to clarify about smashed potatoes inside dough, wanting to make sure. Finally, we just ordered the potato pierogies, we expected to be an appetizer. He started to walk away before we ordered. We called him back. My better half ordered fish and chips, and he walked away again, before he could take my order. This was welcomed when the food arrived. The pierogies were worse than any I've bought frozen. The fish smelled very off, and the fried batter was soggy and chewy. The best part was the frozen, reheated fries, which says a lot about the meal. We left, and left the fish. We choked down the pierogies because we were very hungry. After paying our bill we went in search of edible food.

This restaurant has been in the neighborhood for as long as I can remember. It used to serve primarily Ukrainian food, which is what I tried. My two cousins both ordered chicken. I was extremely disappointed. Pierogies must have been Mrs. T's. Sauerkraut was not fresh. Kielbasa was the only thing that was ok. Didn't even give you a piece of rye bread like most Slavic restaurants. When ordering, one cousin told me not to have the stuffed cabbage because it's terrible, so I didn't. My cousins were ok with the chicken cutlet dinner. They should have changed the name of the restaurant when they changed ownership years ago. Located on a busy densely populated city street. Many other restaurants in the area to try instead.

For a Greek owned diner, they sure know how to whip up a good Polish dish. They know the secret to keeping a successful diner you bought out is to master the dishes that made it successful in the first place. These guys are amazing at what they do. The portions are generous and the staff are beyond friendly. This diner is a staple of the East Village eateries.

The food was slightly overpriced but tasty, but the other patrons for dinner theater! This used to be a well-known place that was hopping at all hours, now you're lucky if you see four people in the restaurant which makes me think that the food might not be that fresh because there's not that much turn over. It's becoming just like any other overpriced New York City Diner. So sad.

I love this place so much! I used to go here a lot with my dad and my little sister when we lived down the block from there. Such sweet servers. :) Everybody is so nice and I also remember going here with lots of my family. I haven t gone in a while but I plan to soon!

Heheheh my hubby took me here first thing when I arrived in America. I was so sleep deprived and jetlagged I was utterly out of it. They were very friendly, and when I accidentally ordered something I hated at first sight; they were nice about it and fixed it to something less dangerous. Can't have folks fresh off the boat barf all over the floor :-). At least that's how I remember my first meal in the new country. Legendary, highly recommended.

When I went to NY to spend Thanksgiving with my brother, Odessa was a godsend. Neither of us is a cook, so it was nice to have an option that felt like a real Thanksgiving dinner without breaking the bank. The other time I went there was also a positive experience.

If you want some porgies and borsch this is not a bad place to go. The decor is old and the interior is dark. Service tends to be good because the restaurant tends to be quiet. It is more affordable compared to Vanessa's and the quiet non-hectic surroundings make this a more enjoyable experience. You may find yourself the only one in the restaurant, but the drink specials make it an affordable weekday dinner spot.

Really good food and I love that they have skylights in the back of the restaurant. Such a throwback to restaurants years ago. You don't see that very much anymore in New York City. Quality food is really good. My girlfriend and I both enjoyed it very much. We'll definitely be going back. They can handle larger crowds like 10 people in the back of the restaurant.

I love this restaurant. I always get the "Odessa Combination Dinner" even if it's for lunch - you'll always have leftovers! It's 4 pirogies, 1 stuffed cabbage, 1 Kielbasa with sauerkraut + 1 potato pancake (and comes with sour cream + apple sauce, of course). You can get the pirogies and Kielbasa fried or boiled. Don't let the meal's appearance deter you - this is the most delicious and filling meal you'll have in a while. If you have a picky kid, just get them a side order of pirogies and tell them they're dumplings.

An absolute delight! Here is a short bit of literature to express my affection:

Greasy pancakes, up all night
Always a comfort when you've had a fright.
Omelettes, waffles, and sweet ice cream
This kitchen is a thing of dreams
And now, a trip, to old Ukraine!
Nostalgia and joy all in my brain
Fried pierogies stuffed with cheese
A side of kielbasa? A whole one please!
All in all, a true delight
Makes you heart feel just right.

Terrific job! I can't help but feel forever indebted to your culinary service to the East Village and New York City at large.

Oessa is a regular old school East Side diner. They serve Eastern European fair such as blintzes and pierogies, borscht and more. They also serve American food like hamburgers with pickles and french fries. It is very similar to the Greek diners in Queens, there is a very thick menu and you can probably find whatever it is that you want. They have coffee and fountain soda and tea and alcohol. They have a decent amount of seating, you probably won t wait for a table. Where across the street from Tompkins Square Park which has a rich cultural history.
