I have visited Crown Point Press several times over the years to view their exhibits of fine art etchings. The gallery is spacious and full of light. The old brick building is gorgeous. The etchings shown are the finest of contemporary art and printmaking.

This year I decided to treat myself to a week there as a student aided by three of Crown Point's "master printers". I recommend it wholeheartedly. It was a major lifetime experience.

Crown Point Press: A Haven for Fine Art Etchings

Crown Point Press is a renowned printmaking studio and gallery located in San Francisco, California. The company was founded in 1962 by Kathan Brown, an artist and master printer who wanted to create a space where artists could experiment with the etching process and produce high-quality prints.

Today, Crown Point Press is recognized as one of the leading fine art printmaking studios in the world. The company has worked with over 500 artists from around the globe, including such luminaries as Chuck Close, Richard Diebenkorn, and Wayne Thiebaud.

Visitors are welcome at Crown Point Press to witness firsthand how fine art etchings are made by contemporary artists in their state-of-the-art printmaking studio. The studio is equipped with traditional copperplate etching presses as well as digital printing technology that allows for experimentation with new techniques.

The gallery at Crown Point Press showcases a rotating selection of prints created by both emerging and established artists. Visitors can view works ranging from abstract compositions to figurative studies that showcase the versatility of etching as an artistic medium.

In addition to producing fine art prints, Crown Point Press also offers workshops and classes for aspiring printmakers. These courses cover everything from basic techniques like plate preparation and ink mixing to more advanced topics like color printing and chine-collé.

One of the unique aspects of Crown Point Press is its commitment to collaboration between artists and printers. Each project undertaken at the studio involves close communication between artist and printer to ensure that every detail of the final product meets both parties' expectations.

Crown Point Press has received numerous accolades over its nearly six-decade history. In 1990, Kathan Brown was awarded a MacArthur Fellowship for her contributions to contemporary art through her work at Crown Point Press. In 2011, she was also honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Southern Graphics Council International.

Overall, Crown Point Press stands out not only for its exceptional quality but also for its dedication to fostering creativity among both established professionals and up-and-coming talent alike. Whether you're an artist looking for inspiration or simply someone who appreciates fine art prints, this San Francisco institution is not one you'll want to miss!
