A wonderful holy place in the historic city of York. Gothic architecture at it's best, however, it is undergoing significant repair work at present. It is obviously not a cheap building to run as the cost of the overall administration and ongoing repair and maintenance work is clearly significant but never comfortable about paying a set charge for visiting a religious building. Much more comfortable at making an appropriate donation.

What an amazing building , it is expensive for entry but you can forgive the price for the amazing views and the upkeep of one of the best buildings in britain. Would recommend going at of peak times as it can get busy with tourist .

Wow what a massive and stunning place. So much to see and take in. We were in there some time. The smells, sounds, stone and wood work. Every inch is decorated with beauty.

From the outside wonderful church, from the inside I was a bit disappointed. Maybe it was just the scaffolding in the middle of the church to restore the organ. I think the entrance fee is correct, as it costs a lot of money to maintain such a building

Lovely

So so

Magnificent and majestic from the outside, be sure to walk around the whole structure. Free! and you can see it from everywhere.

Now - to go in, it is free - up to a well manned roped off area which is for paying guests, only. I get it, someone has to pay the electric bill and so forth. If you are WAY into churchy architecture - go in and do the right thing (pay). if not - look up, and go back out.

Evensong is a treat if you are around for it - be sure to put some coins in the kitty for that, too.

A truly remarkable ecclesiastical building that's well worth a visit. Amazing detailed stone masonry and a very thought provoking place. This structure has seen so much history and survived the eons that it's one of those places that we should all visit at least once in our lives.

A very impressive cathedral. On our first visit, my son, who was five at the time, really enjoyed the activity back pack they loan out - which contained: binoculars, a torch, a magnifying glass, and loads more. It definitely made the visit more interesting for him. The only downside is it costs to enter, but the tickets do last for 12 months.

Amazing place. This is my second visit in 10 years and I still find the inside of the cathedral very beautiful. Loads of history and it is worth it to take the guided tour, so much to learn and take in

Amazing architecture but too costly to go in. Price is ridiculous and disappointed as we decided we wouldn't pay it. It should belong to the people as it is a church. Great to look at though but should be more accessible. Especially for children and families. Too over priced and what a shame as it's our country s history so why can't we go in

Pre booked tickets are required. These are checked on entry and the one-way system in part of the minster is explained. The tower and the majority of the undercroft remain closed. There are guides walking around in the building and they provide an abundance of information and explanation.

A beautiful place to visit.

A beautiful place to visit.
It was perfectly accessible for all the visit. There are the occasional steps but the staff are on hand to help you find another way round. We were lucky enough to have help from a volunteer who showed us round and gave us an insight in to the history of the minster.

The only downside was the lack of accessibility to the outer parts of the minster. However it is expected that such a historical building will have some challenges

For anyone on their feet or in a wheelchair it is a great visit and very interactive

Breathtakingly big.

Breathtakingly big.
But I did not see it to pay admission. Why do I pay church tax?

One of northern England's most popular tourist destinations, the medieval city of York, long the ecclesiastical capital of the Church of England, boasts one of the country's most magnificent cathedrals. The country's largest medieval church, York Minster can trace its roots back to the spread of Christianity in the 3rd century, although the splendid present Gothic structure was built almost 1,000 years later.

Highlights of a tour include the opportunity to view its 14th-century stained glass windows, plus the richly decorated interiors of the choir and north transept. Also worth a visit is the crypt, which contains parts of the original 11th-century church the cathedral now stands on.
