The Downtown Asheville location is currently hiring lifeguards and swimming instructors! Being apart of our Y family gets you a FREE membership and discounts for your family. Applications can be submitted through the YMCA of Western NC website.

I'll be the first to tell you- working at the YMCA is incredibly rewarding. I hear employees say it all the time, 'the Y is so much more than a gym', the Y is a real community and the company works hard to support local families.

We have been members of the Y since 1985, but after what just happened moments ago, we will be changing to another gym.

We pulled into the parking lot as two people (who we realized later were the last employees leaving the building). They watched us get our bags out and walk toward the temporary entrance and as they backed out of their parking spaces next to the building NEITHER OF THEM HAD THE DECENCY to say "Sorry, we're closed." SERIOUSLY! FOR REAL! ARE YOU KIDDING ME!

Between that and the lack of privacy in the locker rooms because they're too timid to enforce the "no cell phone" policy and the nasty bathrooms at the Woodfin location, we're going to see if there's a gym that treats its customers with respect.

Geez, Louise. We had just left Greenlife and they had an employee at the door saying, "we're closed," etc., etc. So how hard would it have been for just one of those Y employees to say, "hey, we just closed." It would have been no big deal to us that they closed early. It's just the attitude of watching someone go through the effort of getting bags and towels in hand and then just driving off chuckling to themselves, "Hardeeharhar! Won't that be hilarious when they get to the door and it's closed and we didn't even have the courtesy to put a sign on the door saying that we had closed early. Oh, hohoho, what chumps!"

I've been going to the downtown Y for 8 years now. The staff has always treated me like family. Unlike the other reviewer, I have never had to wait to use the pool. Not once. We play basketball on Tuesdays and Thursdays and I also come work out, run on a treadmill and swim. Being a Y member makes me feel connected to the community and I have made many friends there. I also feel invigorated and energized all day when I start the day off at the Y.

The WNC YMCA is the most expensive gym in the area, and they're open the least amount of hours. In fact, they just reduced their hours even more for summer, even though most working adults schedules don't change and it caused us a huge inconvenience. Of course they're happy to keep charging the same amount of money for less availability and service. Also I have seen people using the gym equipment in a way that could harm themselves, and the staff and trainers just stand there and don't say anything. If they're not there for safety and to coach members then what are they there for? The good thing about a Y membership is that I can visit other Y's across the country when I travel. The machines are new and work well. If you have money to burn, try them out.

I went there to swim with my fiance and we paid 30 to get in. The guy at the desk was ok he wasn't the best, but the point is when we went to swim they told us we couldnt swim because there was a swim class going on. Also the lap lanes were full.i feel like we should have been told that there was a class going on so we might not be able to swim until afterwards. Also the place was really dirty and smelled horrible .

This is a fine facility. Great class instructors, good equipment and somewhat nice staff. However the management team is a big problem. I had an issue with being charged twice on my credit card and spoke with a membership person that was helpful and nice but couldn t resolve the issue. Then a manager named Chris Fox was called over who I ve seen around and had seemed to be a bit confrontational with other employees before. He didn t seem in a pleasant mood which is fine because it was a Monday morning and we all have those days but he was extremely rude and defensive. I went from feeling like an important member of a respected fitness club to just nobody which really just wasn t a good feeling, the gym is my escape and it s just hard to be treated that way. He was very aggressive, undermining and disrespectful in the things he said and the way he acted as a Manager , saying If you have a problem affording this, we can place your membership on hold . Like wow?? Okay thanks. I felt like I was talking to a spoiled frat douchebag instead of a leader. The issue was never resolved and I was charged twice in one month without the issue being fixed. I really hope that the Y which is known for its leadership can employ some better management and better train them in the future for the members sake. I am still considering canceling my membership because of this issue and most definitely will NOT be using the downtown Y anymore. Ill will drive the extra 25 minutes to the Retuer Y in Arden.

Other members should be aware of Mr. Fox s rude and unprofessional behavior and I hope the Y can address this issue.

My husband and I have been long time members of this facility and during a most recent visit I was completely disgusted at some of the staff behavior. There area few lounge tables at the top of the stairs near the entrance of the center where staff sit at check in and help with membership process, I usually sit at one and wait for my husband. I dont like to eavesdrop, however some of the things that were being said by the two gentlemen at the front desk was just so horrible and disgusting to hear! I have a recording on my cell phone which at times breaks up and is had to hear, but continuous jokes about women's weight and comments about what they should wear and shouldn't wear. I was horrified! I found out later that one of them is the manager!!! Chris someone....? This is completely unacceptable and as a member I tolerate it in Asheville. I will be contacting local media outlets, The YMCA of USA and The Better Business Bureau with this video recording. I've read other reviews on Google and Yelp about this same manger and cant believe this behavior still is allowed to go on. Until then I will continue to being faithful to my class instructors, trainers and other gym goers.

Always very clean. Great child care, staff is helpful and attentive for the most part. Had one bad experience of asking for information about swim classes, one brochure was shoved in my face and the employee just looked the other way and didn't care to ask if I had any other questions. Other than that it's a great environment to be in and the good definitely outweighs the bad (I attend a few times a week).

I love going to the YMCA on Woodfin. I could go free to other places because my insurance company supports Silver sneakers. But I would rather pay the monthly fee to get the excellent classes and teachers, and variety of available classes and times. I take Yoga 3x a week and step aerobics twice a week. I also work out in the weight room. It s great!

Great staff, great classes, and excellent facility. Just avoid it during peak hours and you should be fine. Gender separate sauna/steam rooms and really spacious locker rooms make this Y a much more relaxed space than other Y's. If you are into swimming, you have to be willing to share lanes sometimes, but again, just avoid peak hours and you'll be fine.

This used to be my YMCA when I lived in Asheville for almost 15 years, but alas, the time has come for me to move on. But, I can say that I do know this location well, and it's one of the best YMCA's that I've been to. The Group Exercise programs were my favorite. There's a guy named Aaron there that led Groups for Athletic Conditioning, and other Groups, and I haven't experienced anything like that since. He is awesome. I miss this place. I'm giving it a 4-star because they need to build another floor; it is WAY too crowded here.
