A get-what-you-pay budget hotel in Chelsea. Reception was small, but clean and friendly. It doubles as their hotel bar, which is nice if you want something relaxing in a pinch. The rooms were Spartan, but clean and efficient. European in the sense that you can touch both of the walls with your outstretched arms. Totally worth the stay, however, if you're looking for minimal accommodations.
Small rooms, but extremely social staff and very helpful. Very well located and serves some good coffee! They do have a happy hour on some limited spread.
Truly awful beds and pillows- both were lumpy and hard. I don t look for too much in hotels, especially when I know I won t be spending much time in the room, but this was an awful place to lay my head at night. The location is fantastic and a block from the subway, but that s the only positive I have for this place.
Nice bar in the lobby but the rooms are almost comically small
Very quiet hotel, pleasant staff but whoever designed these little rooms should not be. Not the best use of space. No drawers or hooks of any kind so nothing comes out of your suitcase. One very small shelf in the bathroom good for a toothbrush and toothpaste only. Beds okay. Decent enough price for NYC.
I ve stayed at The Gem Hotel a few times in the last two years. It s a good value. The staff are professional and efficient. I am likely to stay here again the next time I need a room in Chelsea.
Room was reserved by client. Comfortable, close to lots of stuff. Didn't spend much time there, but it was nice, and would be comfortable staying there again.
Rooms are tiny. No room service. Very few staff around to be helpful. "Gym" is a windowless basement room with a few weights and 2 treadmills.
Small but clean rooms with basic amenities. I'm told by local friends the size and prices are good for that area
Stopped by for drinks and event at the bar. The lobby/bar is much too small for any event/gathering of more than 30 people but perfect hideaway for drinks away from crowds. Staff was sweet and attentive, and recommend stopping by if you want a drink away from crowds
Positives:
Great Location right walking distance from F.I.T, Times Square(longer walk)
Clean.
Friendly staff.
Negatives:
Bed wasn't all that comfy. Dark Hallways.
This place is in an amazing location, close to a bunch of great restaurants, Chelsea market and a quick cab to central NY!
Location Central. A block from the 23rd ACE. Cool rooftop. Relaxed vibe. Good dudes at the front desk.
I have stayed in many rooms in Manhattan. These rooms are both expensive and small, even by that standard. I have stayed in very small rooms in other countries. too. Many tiny rooms are well-designed and comfortable. That is not true More
Under expectations and definitely not worth of money. Rooms are so tiny that you literally cannot open suitcase on the floor, air condition is super noisy, wardrobe cannot fit a single shirt properly ... Breakfast is served in "commune" with all other guests at the reception ... everything is just wrong. There are many better places in NY.
Advertises that they have a parking option. It was full upon my late arrival. There are two yellow leather couches in the lobby that are so run down they need to be hauled to the dump. The bed in my room was so close to the floor that it felt like there was no box spring. It was also the oldest and crappiest hotel bed I have slept in, maybe ever. Until about midnight I could hear people having conversations through the walls as well as loud TV sets blaring. i checked out at 4am and wont be back.
The rooms are reasonably cramped, but I have no reference for how that compares to other hotels in the area.
Location is nice, good selection of local restaurants.
Conveniently located in Chelsea and very reasonably priced for New York. The reception and lobby cafe staff are lovely and welcoming. The rooms are on the small side but comfortable and modern. There's a small gym in the basement.
Nice hotel. Clean room (small but they all are). Free water. Old heating unit was a little loud.
Small rooms in a well placed hotel. The only thing I really want out of this hotel to raise my rating is a bathtub.
We booked this hotel because of the great price and location, we were so happy when we checked in, the staff were super lovely and accommodating (especially Riley), the room was really clean and cosy- AND we got a view of the Empire State Building! Highly recommend.
Small rooms are understandable considering the real estate value in NYC, what is not reasonable is providing slow free WiFi for a +$300 room, and charging $8 for faster WiFi.
Nice rooms, if small (it's New York). The Gem has great proximity to all NYC has to offer, with a cute rooftop patio to boot.
The room size is a little bit small for the price. The toilet is leaky and you can hear the street noise quite easily.
Great location - next to Citi Bikes, next to Momofuku Nishi. Clean room. Bed was firm but short. Bathroom was nice and bright. Shower was spacious and enjoyable (although the curtain was not long enough and repeatedly made the floor wet). Very dark hallways were odd compared the bright welcoming reception area and rooms. Strange lingering staff at front desk (bag dude?). The loudest vent ever in our room - made sleeping with AC on difficult. Views of the Empire State building from our room (fourth floor). Great window nook you can sit in to view street and city.
Definitely a budget hotel, 3 stars. Lobby and bar are tiny and basic. Rooms are classic NYC you can almost touch both sides at one, but bed and pillows are comfortable and everything was clean.
The hotel is currently under remodeling in the lobby - so I won't hold that against them. The rooms are super small, but bathrooms are a good size. The staff was very friendly and accommodating during late check-out or storing luggage before catching a flight. Great location in Chelsea to the High Line, shops, and food. Hidden "gem", the rooftop. Amazing views of the Empire State Building.
Sadly, my room is over the bar on the first floor and there is a drone until 3am. Mattress needs to be flipped, limited amenties.
