I love staying at the Gem Hotel in Chelsea. Friendly staff, great location, and wonderful dining options nearby. Starbucks and the 23rd/8th street subway stop right around the corner. It's a great way to be a part of the city (away from tourists) while still having easy access to the subway and all things NYC.

The minor negatives first: Check-in was a bit awkward, not much for customer service or friendliness (I believe we interrupted his lunch break upon arrival). Room is the size of a walk-in closet (albeit typical for NY).
Pros: Clean room and bath, fun atmosphere, walking distance to museums, restaurants, shopping. Would stay again.
Good to know: stop in at the market/restaurant next door! Fantastic wine list and super friendly staff + pretty plates (we had dessert).

This hotel is a nice change of pace from run off the mill corporate hotels. The lobby is small but lovely and inviting, featuring a 4 seat coffee stand/bar and couches. Staff was friendly. And efficient. The rooms feature minimalist design. While the room was clean and comfortable, it was very basic. Would stay here again to be in the heart of Chelsea at a decent price.

It has been fun here. It s Manhattan, NY so you can t be too picky about a lot of things. For instance, room size isn t luxurious but it is sufficient. If you are personable, you ll have a good time. The front desk staff is great at communicating and are honest. They will help you and they will make sure your stay is enjoyable!

Good value for Manhattan. Clean and secure, in Chelsea, a nice neighborhood, convenient to the subway and especially for West Side or downtown destinations. The room was, let's say, European (tiny but clean and pleasant).

Rooms are super TINY! And that's coming from someone who used to live in Hong Kong and is used to small apartments. The only saving grace was that the staff are very helpful and nice. But for the price, it's definitely not worth it.

It's an affordable room if you're booking last minute
There was mildew growth in my bathroom. The thermostat did not work well.
Overall, a decent room in NYC. Not your typical hotel room outside of NYC.

We were assigned the 418 double room and I must say that it was a real stroke of luck. Corner room with double window. View of a beautiful view of the Chelsea neighborhood and the Empire State Building. Private and modern bathroom. Small but functional room. Plus value of the hotel the rooftop on the 6th floor in total is free use of guests (in the evening you can enjoy an incredible view). I suggest the management to take care of the details ... very little indeed, for example a renovation of the blackout curtains in the rooms does not hurt ... despite this the hotel for me is highly recommended !!!

Small rooms, cleanliness of the rooms could be better, bathroom without too much frosty heating, had problems with shower water ... great location, lots of close by, restaurants, markets, pharmacies.

The rooms are absolutely tiny, so don't pack too much! I think I got an overly small room though, compared to others that I saw. The rooftop terrace has great views of the city, and the front desk staff are friendly. However, we were there when reception was being renovated and the elevator consistently broke down for the first 3 days.

The lobby and bar are small and welcoming, the staff was friendly and helpful. The hotel and rooms are well decorated, pretty and bright. And the location is great. Close to the high line and lots of restaurants.

The Gem Hotel located at 300 West 22nd street off 8th Avenue should be considered a Mini hotel because the rooms are really mini.

Upon entering the lobby of these hotel, one will realize they are about to have a small adventure. The lobby's attempts to be a grand lobby of a bigger hotel failed terribly. The color scheme is off, and the furniture do not match.

The elevator (1) was not modern and pretty small.

When you got to your floor, the layout is like a maze, where you turn the corner and you make another immediate turn right away. The hotel utilizes every inch of space that is afforded there, because they even made rooms out of the heart of the building.

The roomes themselves are extremely small, it is so small that with the queens size bed in the room, you only have about 3 feet on each side of the bed. The length of the room was even smaller, because there was less than 3 feet of space between the foot of the bed and the wall, with a small desk fitted it.

The barhroom was relatively big in comparison to the size of the room. As a matter of fact, the bathroom was so big, it was big enough to fit a bathtub in it.

The price of the room according to my friend was over $200.00 US Dollars a night. He said he will not stay there again when he returns to New York again. He further stated the pictures of the hotel and the rooms are very misleading.

We stayed at this hotel for one night. Really the staff is very good and kind, helpful at the time they are asked a favor or asked a question. The rooms and the hotel in general is impeccable. The rooms are too small, but equally they are quite comfortable. We had only one problem with the clock in the room, which was misconfigured and cost us some hours a day, thinking that it was earlier.

A small type efficient place to spend the night in a finemy room after switching from one that smells like mildew was clean enough with updated fixtures but essentially an inside stateroom with a bad television and room to turn around. For such a desirable part of Manhattan the price is the main determinant. Lobby bar concise rendition of itself
A handful of stools next to the reception desk. All very serviceable.

Very good location. The price would have been out of our budget if we hadn't used Priceline. The room was quite small, but who wants to stay in the hotel room anyway when you're on holiday in New York? There is a roof top terrace with a view of the empire state building. We found it by accident as the receptionist didn't tell us about it on check in - you need to go to floor 'P' in the elevator. A quirk of the room was that the shower screen wasn't long enough to stop water from spilling out onto the bathroom floor - so we went through quite a few towels! Would go again if we could get a similar discounted deal.

A great spot to stay in NYC! I appreciated the service and support!

Sabrina - a key staff member, was welcoming, suggested excellent excursions and was clearly a native NYC-er who is just so proud! What a significant differnce she made! She was the most outstanding staff member in terms of industry professioniaism and regular, friendly banter each afternoon. People like Sabrina make an incredible difference.

The room was AOK. It was on the complete opposite side of the elevator, so you had to go through dark catacombs to get it it, but it was worth the trek. It was quiet, and the heater worked. The view out the window was just another building 2 ft away, so that sucks, but it was good for sleeping, I couldn't hear the street, and the water was hot.

Negatives:
No view out the window
I sent email to the front desk the day before checking to ask where I could park (couldn't remember the garage name), and it was not answered.
I called the day of checkin to ask same question, put on hold, and hung up after 20 minutes on hold.
Finally got the info, and went to the garage to park, but they were full. Had to park another block away for an extra $25. Hotel wasn't interested.

How to fix problems:
Answer your email same day
Answer your calls and talk to the people
Have guaranteed parking at your garage, not just best effort.
Care about customer problems with parking, and offer cover the delta.

This is based on my most recent visit which was on a Thursday night in December 2017.

The new reception/bar area looks really nice as they recently remodeled. The Penthouse is also remodeled and it looks gorgeous, specially the bathroom with new subway tiles. Adjacent to the penthouse they opened a new rooftop where you can see the Empire State building and enjoy a beautiful sunset.

Great location VS price for Chelsea Market area. Don't expect large rooms as you are in Manhattan afterall but if you intend to spend most of the time out and about in the city this hotel will be fine for you.

The room was small yet modern and cozy. It's all the necessities. The bed was comfortable, surprisingly very quiet I expected some bleed or other noise but none. TV was wel sized and placed. It was very clean and neat. A few tweaks would make it a better experience. There was no separation in the bathroom of the shower and main area. The sink did not drain fast or eventually at all. No ice bucket / ice machine. There is no refrigerator so there is the need for ice and said machine. Hotel lobby and team were welcoming and responsive.

Staff was incredibly friendly and the service was phenomenal - the front desk people talk to you like you've been staying there for weeks. Location is good with lots of dining to choose from. Rooms were small - par for the course in NYC - but nicely appointed. Consider staying here!

Good location but the rooms are smaller than average (and NYC hotel rooms are already small enough). The bed was really uncomfortable - I could feel the springs. Friendly staff and again, the location is great if you need to be on the west side.

Stay here!

Stay here!
If you love boutique hotels, wonderful staff, cleanliness, and a decent neighborhood make your reservations now!
Oh... and BOGO drinks during happy hour!
Seriously though, this place was great for the two nights we were there. We explored the city all day and night and had a comfy bed to return to when we got exhausted. The bathroom was very clean. I liked the filled shampoo and shower gel dispensers on the wall.
I could go on and on about this place but I've done that on 3 or 4 other site reviews already. Just take my word for it- it's truly a GEM (pun intended)!

The staff is friendly. The gym is alright given how small the room is (but again this is Manhattan). It is clean. But I came home with 20 super red itchy spots that look like bed bug bites. Waiting for doctor to tell me next week.
