After dealing with the single track roads we were glad we finally got there, but I'm afraid after all the hype we were very disappointed with the sanctuary. The sanctuary (though exploits the area they have to the best of their ability) looks very old and outdated has the feeling they are still stuck in the 60's and the range of monkeys they have is very limited, The monkeys only occupied a small section of the grounds behind and to the side of the old house and you could walk around in 20 minutes flat which was another big disappointment, the shop is very small and could be used better, the toilets that we saw are unisex in an out building. The staff all are fantastic but there is one who thinks he owns the place and is over zealous in his telling about how NOT to treat monkeys and has a bad attitude towards adults with learning disabilities we witnessed him actually insist one left the premises even after the carer explained the situation while we were there. The only reason I have 2 stars was because most of the staff were fantastic and we have a year pass with our gate ticket...... (Not that we will be returning). Otherwise I would of struggled to give 1 star.

My advice? ....Don't waste your money ...Just go to Monkey World instead were everything is better,Bigger, worth the entrance fee and a very good cause.

Cute little place, lovely scenery and nice informative staff.... Not the best for wheelchair access but we managed it! All children had a great time. Worth a visit but only a couple of hours! Do free careers too which is a great help!

The knowledgeable and available staff make this a truly informative and individual visitor experience. The educational ethos and green mission of the sanctuary are both laudable and my son's vegan partner who is studying animal behaviour was very impressed and also enjoyed the ice cream, unlike my mother :)

It's true what the negative reviews say, there aren't many monkeys and you can get around the entire park in a short space of time. But it's a sanctuary and not a zoo. The food in the cafe did the job just fine and the map puzzle kept my little one entertained.
Above all, the animals are very well cared for and the staff who were stationed at each enclosure were very pleasant and very knowledgeable.
The enclosures were large, interesting and very cleverly designed to make life interesting for the rescued animals that now seen to have a very happy life.
We all enjoyed it and will be back.

Friendly helpful staff. Love how they help to raise awareness and promoting to stop the monkey pet trade. All staff are highly knowledgeable and give various talks through out the day. There is always something happening through out the day.

My family of 4 loved this place! The residents are all beautiful and so well looked after by the incredibly knowledgeable, passionate and caring staff. I would recommend a visit, help to support this place financially as they do they a fantastic job and make sure you pop by the gift shop!

A relaxing day out, very informative keepers are on hand for talks or to answer any questions. Feeding time seems to be around 2pm most days. Overall it's quite small, so if you rush round you'll be done in less than an hour, but we just enjoyed sitting and watching the monkeys interacting with each other and listening to the keepers so we're here for a good few hours. Cafe just outside is vegan/vegetarian so might not suit if you've got fussy children like me.

Quite a number of years ago together with our family we visited the sanctuary and I ended up with a baby woolly monkey on my knee with its tail round the back of my neck while it tried to reach for food placed on the table in front of me. I'd been warned not to touch it or try to stroke it as its mother was close at hand. It was a fabulous experience that I will never forget.

Went with the children on a rainy day. They weren't overly impressed and we wasn't either. There wasn't much of a sanctuary really, quite small and crammed. Looked alot more appealing on the web site and leaflet which is why we visited but was fairly disappointed. Lovely cause though so on the other hand it's good to know that the money we paid in would of helped in some way.

This is a fabulous charity which rescues abused and neglected monkeys from the pet trade. It is a highly educational but interesting centre, and there are always several keepers around giving talks on the monkeys themselves and the primate pet trade. It is a truly unique experience; it is not a petting zoo, so don't expect to be able to cuddle the monkeys. However, it is a meaningful trip which I would highly recommend. Everyone is very helpful and informative there, and it is not a budget breaker. The food in the cafe is also very well made.

They're doing a good job here and it was very eye opening to see just how badly some of these monkeys are treated before they get helped out here at the sanctuary. The keepers were very informative and there is a lot to be learned about monkeys and their habits.

A wonderful place to go as a family to see the monkeys and more importantly to learn more about them. The keepers are on hand all day to talk to you about the monkeys and are very kind and enthusiastic about what they do. Thank you to the sanctuary for a brilliant day!

Absolutely brilliant place,

Absolutely brilliant place,

I was there when they had just opened for the season and they let us watch the pack/ lead monkey go into the tree on its own so as to check that ALL the branchs were safe .for the other monkeys that is mother's and especially the babies to climb the tree and all the branches would take there wieght, amazing, well recommend the place.

Slightly hippie vibe to this animal sanctuary in the woods. The enclosures are set into the side of a steep hill and quite impressive on their own. We visited during wet weather so did not see that many monkeys but we spent some time speaking to the very engaging staff and letting our two year old roam around. The play area and nearby under cover section are good for small children.

Was a good visit and good to see the monkeys so close up. Their enclosures and walkways seem well thought out and the monkeys themselves seemed content and well fed. Not so sure if the visitor following the pathway beneath one overhead walkway was mightily impressed when a large alpha male decided to wee on him from above....

I've been going for years with my family and have never ever been disappointed. Its lovely to see animals, in need, being cared for so well. Very friendly and helpful staff, and a lovely overall environment.

If ever there was a place that deserves more money from the public purse then it's this one. It's also a place to show us just exactly how we humans don't deserve the planet. Hard working and knowlegable staff. Just visit ... you won't be disappointed

Really good setup and the monkeys were awesome. The sanctuary had only recently reopened and it was relatively busy. Due to the size of the place we were finnished with our visit quite quickly. This was my only real criticism.

Cages looked terribly under maintained, one staff member clearly supported the animal liberation front in his personal views on the keeping of any pet in a domestic setting not just primates but cat's and dogs.
We spent twenty one minutes here and left,
Having worked in the zoo industry I was absolutely devastated by the visual condition of the sanctuary, disappointed by the staff's attitude to visitors.
Could benefit from a massive overhaul and some serious managerial changes, what a shame

Quite small yet very well done. Tiny one track roads to get to the sanctuary. Quite terrifying. The staff who look after the monkeys do wonderful informative talks and are all very friendly. Worth a visit.

Bit pricey but a lovely place to spend a couple of hours. The keepers know their monkeys and are happy to answer any question. I've been a couple of times and find going after lunch is better as its a bit quieter. Kids play area is good as is the activities hut.

An absolutely fabulous place to visit. The monkeys were interesting to look at and there were often talks about it. The road to get there is dangerous and has lots of sharp turns so drive carefully because some people don't. The locals are idiots. Bring a picnic and relax in the garden after seeing the monkeys. PLEASE DON'T EAT IN FRONT OF THEM. Some stupid lady was making faces at them while eating some haribo. Also, a women let her kids climb up onto the fences. The staff didn't do much at all.

Not a bad day out. It isn't a huge place, and be prepared for a lot of steps - not especially pram friendly! Only a few breeds of monkey, but the keepers are obviously knowledgeable and passionate about their work.

Went here a few years ago when my son expressed an interest in possibly working with animals after uni. At that time the place felt welcoming and informative, we spoke at length with some students who were on work placements from a couple of veterinary colleges who were really interested in telling us about the day to day workings with the various monkeys that they look after. I've tried coming back numerous times this year and it seems to be hardly ever open. When I finally managed to visit, the place seems a shadow of itself. Firstly you are advised that you use the car park at your own risk, due to subsidence. So a visitor attraction knows that their visitors could potentially damage or lose their car if the car park was to slide into the sea!
The day I went there were very few monkeys around, most were inside their territories rather than outside in the open, I understand this, it's not a zoo and they are not exhibits to be gawked at, however there was so little else to see and the information boards looked worn out.
The few staff around looked like bored teenagers doing summer jobs and showed no interest in their roles. Having had a decent meal in the raised cafe last time I decided to pass this time, it really looked quite grotty and dilapidated.
Unfortunately the sanctuary looks tired and just seems to want to take your money and not offer much in return...quite sad really

In response to Shaun James and to give some facts as a dissabled person. I am so angry at your comments! As a disabled person I want it to be known that this place is amazing! You can drive right down to the gate and yes it a steep push up to the first level and the next level is not an option BUT IT'S A MONKEY SANCTUARY!!! What kind of natural environment would these poor animals have if it was on the flat? It's nasty ignorance as yours that makes a place like this even necessary in the first place. I'm SURE ALL of the compassionate staff wish there was no need for rescue centres such as this. And as for bacon sandwiches your a muppit, YOUR IN AN ANIMAL RESCUE CENTRE and your crying for meat! I'm so sorry to be rude but you really are a total muppit! If any wheelchair users who like animals and scenery read this then go. Yes it's a very short steep push up to the first level and you can't really go further but at that point you are surrounded on three sides by the cuties, you can also access the bat hide. The cafe does coffee cake, and others, to die for and you can sit in your chair looking out over the beautiful countryside of you. I've been going here for over 40 years and this session is my first as a wheelchair user you do miss 1/3 of the place but it's worth it to support the cause and have a beautiful day, the carer enters for free so it's a beautiful few hours out. Enjoy <3

It may be small but spend time to speak to the keepers who are passionate and knowledgeable about the monkeys. My family came away positively charged about the good work that the sanctuary carries out!

And the ticket lets you return free for a year which we certainly will do.

It was difficult to see the monkeys, the keepers were very informative but we couldn't really see the monkeys they were talking about, the footpaths were very steep even the ones in place for wheelchairs and buggies. There was a coffee shop but the seating area was downwind of the toilet block and the smell was very off putting.
They did have a beautiful wild garden area where we saw some lovely butterflies.

The sanctuary itself is extremely small, then there is a nature walk that takes up most of the time, we found the cafe extremely limited as you couldn't get a bottle of drink to take away.

Short visit but the friendly and knowledgeable staff make up for that. There is a real impression that the monkeys are cared for and this is very much a sanctuary, not a zoo so you can walk around without feeling guilty about small cages and unhappy animals. Didn't get chance to do the woodland walk but looked like a nice wander!
