The cafe area is also at home and the display is just right. If you have two hours, you can enjoy everything except the special exhibition until you are full. Because it is near the station, transportation is also good. It is a contemporary art museum that I want to stop by again

Beautiful gallery; it's free to see the ongoing displays of local history but you'll pay a reasonable tenner for their well-curated exhibitions such as Hannah Hoch, a brilliant take on collage and Dada. The bookshop is really great and full of unusual mags as well as arty books and gifts.

Nice gallery, some very interesting well laid out exhibitions in here from artists you wouldn't normally get the opportunity to see. Not too busy I visited on a Sunday afternoon and didn't have to fight to look at the art. Book shop is very well stocked and there is a nice cafe for coffee and bites to eat once you are finished.

An interesting, informative and hip gallery. Offering great people watching opportunities over fabulous coffee and refreshments. Good variety of work by those mystical beasts known as artists. Our visits are often inspirational and thought provoking. Go visit and feed all of your senses.

A well known gallery in London that has a history going back to the early 20th century. Modern contemporary works by famous artists and photographers have had exhibitions here. Across several levels the rooms are well lit and the works are well displayed. There is a cloak room, coffee shop which also has great lunches available as well as a gift shop.

Unluckily, it was the moment of seasonal renew of exhibitions, so I could only see few things. I took the tour for free, but it wasn't so enjoyable. The building is beautiful, a piece of history.

For decades Whitechapel Gallery have been showing fantastic exhibitions of thought provoking contemporary art. They've broadened my horizons, and for that I'm grateful. On top of that, they show some interesting video screenings, and have a nice cafe/bar too! Buy a membership to bring a guest. Well worth it if you'll visit more than a couple times a year.

A great institution which has acted as a trailblazer in East London and London in general. Always have well curated shows, a strong bookshop and good limited editions. They organise great events for patrons as well.

I really liked the use of negative space to compliment the artwork on display. The bookshop is great as well!

Bonus feature: Big fan of the staircase design, which let's in a lot of natural skylight.

The Whitechapel Gallery is a really interesting space. Currently they have an extremely interesting, interactive exhibition called The Spirit Of Utopia.

They are extremely welcoming and always have informative and fun talks and projects that you can get involved in.

All the exhibitions are free so it's well worth taking a trip to see what you will find.

The gallery is Worth the trip across London if you like modern art. I found that I lost myself in the gallery for about an hour just wondering. When I visited the gallery was not busy so never felt that I had to rush. There is also a lovely coffee shop across the road called Aldgate coffee house

Interesting eclectic shows and a profound connection to the local area too. Saw a fascinating exhibition of old American Dustbowl photos the other day, then found myself in a gallery exploring the silencing if working class women. I love this place.

Always meant to go as has a good reputation. Ticked it off my bucket list now but very unimpressed except for a temporary exhibition of American pre-WWII depression photos with fascinating commissioning notes given to the photographers; that part made my day but I'm a total philistine about the clever art and social project art (or whatever it's called) which no doubt must have been great fun to do.

A CRIME UNTOLD THAT HAPPENED TO ME HERE WITH THE WHITECHAPEL GALLERY:
WAY BACK IN 1983 I ENTERED MY PAINTING FOR THE ANNUAL OPEN SHOW. IT WAS A LARGE FOUR FEET BY FOUR FEET OIL PAINTING ENTITLED DANCERS. I HADN'T TAKEN PICTURES OF IT AS I HAD MY CANON AE.1 PROGRAMME STOLEN IN PARIS THE PREVIOUS YEARS....THE DEPOT VENUE FOR ENTERING WAS IN BISHOPSGATE ROAD. I WENT THERE WITH IT . THERE WAS A YOUNG,TALL MAN THERE ALONE DEALING WITH PEOPLE'S WORK.. HE TOLD ME TO GO AWAY ,OR COME BACK NEXT YEAR. IT DIDN'T MAKE SENSE TO ME . HE SAID HE COULDN'T GIVE ME A RECEIPT FOR IT .BUT I HANDED IT IN.. I DON'T REMEMBER FILLING IN ANY PAPER WORK...MAYBE I DID THAT BEFORE I WENT THERE?I WAITED SIX WEEKS AS IT HADN'T GONE IN ,BUT I HADN'T RECEIVED ANY PAPER WORK .HE SAID HE COULDN'T GIVE ME BACK MY ART WORK .HE SAID HE DIDN'T HAVE MY PAINTING ...I REMEMBER I DID MAKE SOME PHONE CALLS TO THEM...I WENT BACK THERE A FEW TIMES .HE WOULD NOT GIVE ME BACK MY WORK,,,AND HE SAID HE COULD NOT FIND IT... I DID NOT KNOW WHO TO TELL OR TURN TO AS I HAD NO ONE TO HELP ME BUT MYSELF....I WAS NEVER TO SEE MY PAINTING AGAIN...!!! THIS COULD HAPPEN TO ANYONE ....!
A FEW YEARS LATER I TRIED TO BOOK AN INTERVIEW WITH NICHOLAS SEROTA THE DIRECTOR OF THE WHITECHAPEL ART GALLERY ...AN APPOINTMENT WAS GIVEN TO ME BUT WHEN I WENT IT WAS A CAT AND MOUSE GAME ...I WAS NEVER TO HAVE AN INTERVIEW OR SEE THE DIRECTOR ,,,THEY WOULD SAY "HE WON'T SEE YOU OR HE ISN'T AVAILABLE "THIS SURELY REFLECTS WHAT THE WHITECHAPEL GALLERY IS REALLY LIKE BEHIND THE SCENES...AN EAST END HUB!
SEVERAL YEARS LATER THE RECEPTIONIST WAS ASKED TO GIVE ME A STRANGE MESSAGE ..SHE TOLD ME HER LONG SURMON BUT COULD NOT HEAR A WORD OF IT. MY BRAIN WENT INTO COMA MODE!!!!! WAS SO LONG AGO I CANNOT REMEMBER WHAT IT WAS ABOUT..IT WAS THEIR WAY TO JUSTIFY WHAT HAD HAPPENED..NOT EVEN AN APOLOGY...

Not what I expected if I'm honest. Navigating the building isn't easy, the spaces don't really feel like gallery spaces, just disjointed rooms with no function. The work is very "out there", which isn't necessarily a bad thing, art is subjective after all, but I wouldn't recommend this gallery to those not used to or interested in hipster environments and obscure art.

I was at the Whitechapel Gallery last week on a really important business meeting and I have to say that I was very happy. The waitress was really polite, she served us promptly and the food was good. I had scrambled eggs with bacon and it was nice.
