Beautiful campus. Last week I met bunch of new-comer friend, they asked me what do I do, I told them I am learning in western University in Mandarin, it does sound like a fake university from a province in China. I should get used to . LOL. But I can tell as a student from Western University, it is a pretty good university in Canada. Cheers~

I have never attend to the University of Western O...

I have never attend to the University of Western Ontario (UWO) as a person who graduated with a secondary school diploma and have been outside of high school for over a couple years. I am not in school, and I am done with schooling for life. My argument of my review is about most of the students from this university are causing so much chaos. Whenever I am at CF Masonville Place, there will always be UWO students at Masonville Mall buying clothes, shoes, makeups, electronics, Starbucks or Aroma Expresso coffees, restaurant and buying alcohol from the LCBO or Farm Boy s just across Masonville Place. They used their student loan money from OSAP (Ontario Student Apprentice Program) which is meant for their essential needs and paying their education besides going out for a shopping spree and they think they own Masonville Mall. Seriously, can all the UWO students just stop thinking you run Masonville Mall since this city (London, Ontario) is the only University they have to offer whether they are from here, outside of the city or from overseas. They will always party and blow away their OSAP money on alcohols. They do litter besides throwing it in a trash bin. They always want student discounts of 10% Off; which it is even that much since it is like paying your food or items without the tax. Let CF Masonville Place be fit everyone, and it is not own by the University of Western Ontario. Masonville Place is own by Cadillac Fairview, so that is why there is a CF on Masonville Place. People going to post-secondary school will spend thousands of dollars for a few years, and they will never find a good paying job. I will never get near to anyone who goes to UWO; when I am at Masonville Mall. I understand Masonville Mall has nothing to do with UWO, but a lot of students comes here all the time.

We all know about the beautiful campus and outstan...

We all know about the beautiful campus and outstanding campus life, so I'll focus on what matters most at the end of the four years, the academic side. I did my chemistry degree at Western and because I've also worked there doing summer research, I know the internal workings. If you don't have time to read this full review my opinion is I can't recommend the chemistry department and UWO. Now if you have time to read more, I will split my comments into fact versus opinion to the best of my ability so you can come to your own conclusions.

Opinion: The entire school including the chemistry department is a big money grab and is financially corrupt. Fact: The president accepted double salary of about $1 million and then Western spent another $100,000 hiring a public relations firm to rescue his and the university's reputation. Fact: In first year chem, students must buy $300 of photocopied nearly black and white lab manuals and work books, and my research boss told me the money goes to pay for parties, social events and renovations to research labs that bring no benefit to first year students. Opinion: The quality of instruction varies from poor to excellent depending on the prof but mostly poor to average. Fact: One prof vaped e-cigs during an exam. Fact: Many classes are spent listening to profs read off powerpoints. Opinion: Most profs do not care about teaching because they're too busy with research or pretend to be so. Fact: It is impossible to contact a prof outside of class if you got questions, especially in first year, so you go to the resource room where a TA gives you wrong information. Fact: It does get better in the smaller classes, but you won't see that for a few years. Fact: The department just wants more enrolment, or what they internally call bums in seats, so they can get more money, but the same can be said of every department at Western. Opinion: Some profs have high standards, a good thing, but so high that any humanity or compassion is out the window. Fact: "Too bad" or similar is a common answer you'll get from profs. Opinion: If you take chemistry at Western be ready to be a bum in a seat and get a big line of credit because OSAP won't cut it. Opinion: Go to McMaster instead if you want to do chemistry or any other science. Opinion: My sister just finished second year in chemistry at McMaster and thought the profs were genuinely interested in her success and well being, and she has not experienced anything I told her. Fact: My parents are both well-accomplished chemists and my sister and I both love chemistry to death, so it's not like we have anything against the subject. Despite my poor experience taking chemistry at Western, I am still very fond of the science and am currently doing my Master's another school where the attitude is much better.

I was there early April, for a horrible tooth infection. Receptionist (Kristi) went above & beyond her job to squeeze me in. She was so compassionate. The dental surgeon (Dr. J. Soparlo) was fantastic! He stayed after clinic closed to look after me. I really appreciated that since it was Friday..
The follow-ups I had were very pleasant too. I was very impressed, not just with their abilities, but their compassion.
Thank you!

Terrible place, they care only aboutthe tuitions and you have better chance to study else where. profs are not profs with a knowledge on how to talk to students or even care about them. There are so many better institutions around. but not this one. Having a beautiful campus and location doesn't mean anything but extra tuition in their pockets. look for something that they know how to treat your kirds.

Higher up administrators (vice-presidents, vice-provosts, provosts and such) actively attempt to suppress freedom of speech of students (including student's online activity). Like what someone else said, the school threatens students with code of conduct violations to try and shut them up. They've tried to say the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms do not apply in the university disciplinary system. Highly, highly disturbing.

So basically you pay 10k a year to be able to write an exam at the end. Because most Professors don't care if you understand material and you end up studying everything all over at home on your own. Staff is rude and unprofessional. But parties and concerts were lit though that should make up for it right?

A few friends now have told me that they can't get jobs there; they're not students/alumni of Western. They say the University of Western only considers its own students and staff for employment. I say: that's what a university does when its students and staff can't get jobs anywhere else ;)

I love this school. I spent two years at Brock University before transferring here. You honestly can't even compare the two. This has been the most incredible experience of my life so far and I don't regret my decision at all. This really is a top notch school, great academics and great professors. You get as much as you put in with the student life. There's always something happening on campus and there's so many resources to help you in all areas of your life, from mental well-being to preparing for your future career. You will find so many opportunities here. If you are trying to decide what university to go to, don't listen to the stereotypes. Go visit, see what each school has to offer, and make a decision based on what you think is best for you. Western is wonderful and I know many other schools are too. It's important to find the right fit. But coming from a current student, I really believe this school is a great choice.
