The zoo is quite small so you can probably see everything within less than half a day.
The best part of the zoo are the giraffes. The enclosure where the put their food allows you to come very close to them. Very enjoyable for the kids.

I have found if you go on a cloudy day more animals are out, if it's a sunny day most of the animals will be hiding and trying to keep cool! Theres a bit of uphill walking involved to get around the Zoo so make sure to bring appropriate footwear and a pram for younger children :)

Small but exceptional zoo! Especially when you come from Europe. 8 out of 10 animals are not present with us. 100% chance of seeing kiwis ... and even touching them. You can see otters, wallabies, kangaroos, Tasmanian monsters, red panda and even capybaras.

Zoo has greatly updated its facilities over the years. There is now a much greater emphasis on getting up close to these animals.

The variety of animals has changed through the years but still provides plenty of varieties of exotic and native animals.

There is plenty to do to entertain you for a whole day and come time to eat the food isn't too badly priced and has decent variety.

Have been there several times now. Feel bit costly but sometimes discounted rates are good one to grab. I struggle with some of the glass enclosures due to so much of light reflections, really struggle to look through in a bright days. And if I succeed look through then definitely big struggle to take photos! I guess non reflecting glass (like the one used for mobile screens) can help I guess, but not too sure.

Really good small zoo with good quality habitats for the animals, so much so that most of them were hiding the day we visited. Still a good place to visit with our young grand children and there are some good picnic spots and things for children to climb on as you go around. Very enjoyable.

Fun place to visit with the family, could use a few refreshment stands here and there though. The walk up and down the hilly layout left me parched to the bone, thankfully I had a bottle of water with me.

It may be smaller than many but it is incredibly well laid out with easy winding paths between animals, and themed play areas for children that relate to the animals they have just seen. The staff so obviously love the animals, and there is an amazing purpose built animal hospital on sight which you can see into and watch them caring for sick and injured animals. We have been to many zoos, but haven't been to one before where it is designed so that you can see every animal in every exhibit (well the exception would be the red panda which was the only exhibit we saw nothing in). They achieve this by the way they lay out the paths and the animal spaces, all very cleverly done. The staff are super knowledgable and pretty much every hour (or more often) there is an informative talk by somebody who clearly (a) knows their stuff and (b) just loves the animals they are looking after. The zoo contributes to conservation in so many ways, including caring for sick animals found in the wild before returning them to the wild. Can't recommend it highly enough we really enjoyed it despite the day being grey and cold.

Wellington zoo is alright but it has a lot to work on. I have been there many times and i enjoy it but i always find that a lot of the enclosures are just gardens behind a fence. The animals are no where to be seen and sometimes i hear everyone be quiet because they see a little of the fur of the animal moving in a tree right at the back of the enclosure and then it is gone. Really? I have been to Auckland zoo and i had a way better experience than at Wellington zoo. Wellington zoo need to work on making their zoo more unique and exciting instead of having visitors trying to catch a glimpse of the tail of a lion that is behind a rock.

I came in on a cold and dreary day so most of the animals were trying to keep warm. However, zookeepers were friendly, helpful and informative. Parking is free (when I was parking anyway). The Kaka were fun birds to watch :)

Wellington Zoo has come a long way in the last 10 years, the enclosures are large and clean and the animals well cared for. It's a great place to visit for a family outing the entrance fee is high but you can tell that the zoo is well cared for. The interactive educational bits all around the zoo are a great way to get the kids involved. There is information everywhere about the animals the zoo and the environment. Great day out.

I liked the zoo animals seem happy and it was a good experience. I went to a encloser with wallabys and I petted all 4 they were super cute and fuzzy. I also visited thr girraffe encloser. There is a tall ramp that gets you pretty much eye to eye with them. It was a memorable moment. I had to make my trip short because it started raining. On my way out there was a small gift shop that didnt have very much selection other than small stuffed animals ranging from 25 to 35 dollars and a few nik naks. Overall good time will come back for the full zoo experience.

We're big fans of Wellington Zoo. They make great use of the space they have and provide spacious and protected environments for all the animals. Their conservation work is wonderful as well and runs as a theme through the whole space.
