Wellington Zoo Reviews

If you've got kids this is recommended for visitors to Wellington, it's a decent size and a nice walk.

Fabulous zoo. Get less than a foot away from kiwis! Also it's very cool to watch the zoo vets.

It's a zoo. Never sure about keeping wild animals in captivity

Awesome family day out. This place has changed from my childhood memories of concrete pits with animals in them in the 1970's into a modern Zoo keeping the animals much more content than ever before.

Great zoo! I don't know much about animal welfare issues with this zoo but as far as environment goes it is a great set up. Obviously hilly (being Wellington) but also very green and the facilities, signs, services etc are great. Merkats are a huge attraction as are the chimps and kea.

Was good for a day out, some animals we couldnt see but still worth going.

They are not that crowded during winter. But it is a must go place in wellington. The zoo is very big, you can spend a half day inside it. They have tiger, kangoroo, kiwi bird, kea and other New Zealand famous birds....

It's pretty good if u catch them early in the morning after 9:30am.

Awesome place for kids and family. Need about 2h for full tour. Parking around the zoo is a challenge.

Very steep hills to walk around. Should have had rides available.

Nice, natural as possible environment for zoo animals. Good map so we saw all that weren't hiding. Jeep, moter bike, boat, play things so kids don't get bored. Long que for ice cream only down side.

Not a fan of zoo's in general. This is clean and easy to get around but the enclosures are very small, seemed more cruel than it has to be. The Cheetah enclosure was very very small for example.

A good place to visit on a fineday esoecially with kids

We had an awesome day here. The facilities are fantastic. We loved how there are lots of spaces spread throughout for taking a break maybe even a picnic. The staff are very friendly and were seemingly on hand whenever we had a question or were wondering out loud.

My 7 year old nephew and I spent a glorious 5 hours at Wellington Zoo...we both love animals, and he played on all the children's playgrounds. The Cafe, and the Gift shop have a good variety of products for sale too. Here's a photo of a Meerkat sunning itself

We were fortunate to share the place with only a handful of people. Although it was bitterly cold, and some animals were warm inside, the park was lovely and well kept and the Keepers were friendly and inviting. It was a treat.

Great place! I'd suggest heading here when you get a chance. Great to see all the different kinds animals playing and having fun. Hope to be back soon!

A wonderful opportunity to hand feed and pat the lemurs during the close encounter while 10% goes to support this critically endangered species in Madagascar. Thanks for the gift whanau.

Great zoo child s ideal playground with pets included, abit pricey tho! More water fountains for drinking would be nice to. Otherwise great for days outing.

It might be one of the best zoos that truly care for the well being of its animals. For animal lovers, you can really feel the difference. U know what I am talking about... although low diversity, it offers one of the closest encounters a visitor can have! Close to a kiwi! How not to compliment it!

Really enjoyed all my visits... and glad to see that animals got lot of space to roam around.... clean and easy to guide yourself through the entire place..if you are lucky you will be able to see lions as most of the time, especially when its not sunny, they are hiding somewhere .

A great place to wind down while enjoying time with your kids

Awesome afternoon, particularly for my 5 year old who loves animals. We got to see the lion very close up! Great place.

We filled in half a day with our 2 youngest grand kids they loved the place and Zoo staff very friendly and had great talks about the animals at set time's

Lucky enough to do a close encounter with the red pandas ... plenty of animals out and about on a sunny autumn day

Big shout out to the wonderful staff members that showed up despite the ridiculous rain and wind for the kiwi and penguin talks. Tea here is also fantastic. I recommend the Rose and Manuka (NZ tea).

We visited the zoo and had a pretty good time. The chimps were absolutely funny. They were well worth going to see on there own. Plenty for the kids to do there as well. Just be prepared for a lot of up hill walking which I didn't mind. And maybe choose a time when most of the animals aren't sleeping as was on the day we went. Some of them we couldn't find but the ones we did were great.

Great zoo, lovely walkways, and cool interactive exhibits. Had a great day here, learning about all the different animals. Would recommend the chimpanzees.

Rip off by mojo cafe, 45 mins to make a smoothie as the guy decided to make all coffee first. In a spirulina smoothie there was no spirulina. Don't go there.

Awesome Staff and Loved our visit for the first time.

Alot of the main animals were hiding and couldn't really see them

Nice zoo, was nice weather today so was a great day to visit, alot of the animals where sleeping. But still fun to see them :) only negatives was all the screaming children.

Really enjoyed attending the Capybara Experience last weekend. Interaction with the animals was great, keeper was very helpful and knowledgeable, and took lots of lovely photos and videos for us. Thoroughly recommend. Price also included general Zoo admittance so we enjoyed wandering for an hour or so after.

The Zoo itself is great, lots of different types of animals that you can get quite close up to. You can even feed the giraffes! I strongly recommend taking your own food though, the cafe inside the zoo doesn't have much of a menu and had sold out of most of by 1pm. The food is average and ridiculously expensive. A good family day out otherwise!

Friendly staff and nice day out looking at the animals

I was eating a pizza at the old Elephant House and who turned up. Prince Charles and Camilla. Or maybe his brother. Who would believe it.

Wellington Zoo was amazing as usual. We had a great chat with one of the zookeepers about the dingos, very cool!

Very lovely zoo! We spent the entire morning there, visiting the animals one by one. Most of their animals live freely within the zoo, so that's good!

Hadnt been to zoo in over 10 years and my its changed. Very nice and tidy walkways/paths. Was a beautiful day and most of the animals were out. We had a great day.

Wonderful coming back after 10 years. Animals are well looked after, paths are very clean and tidy. Well worth a visit!

Zoo staff were extremely accommodating in retrieving my hat from the capybara enclosure.

Was brilliant, very clean and well looked after. Great exhibits and that staff talks and feeding time were enjoyable. Because it was a week day visit we had the place almost to ourselves. My favourite was the red panda. It was so cute.

Very fun. Good for the family and it friends. Only bad thing is walki g through due the hills can be difficult.
