If you want art that will challenge you in a building that has plenty of room for surprises, this is your place. I'm constantly surprised with their collection, the inventiveness of the art, and their bravery to take risks with what they curate. I highly recommend that you try the artist-created mini-golf there! It comes with a pass to the museum, and it's a lovely way to have fun and take in the beauty of the Minneapolis Skyline.

The art on display was great! and the look of the building is really interesting and fun to walk around in. However, if you're going as a teen (In jeans and a plain shirt mind you) be aware of the fact that you will be stopped on multiple occasions. One piece of art I saw appeared to have water inside but it was so still that it seemed it may just have been a clear top piece. I didn't want to touch the piece so I blew at it very lightly (Stupid? yes, but at least I didn't touch it) it did move slightly but we ended up both having to move on as one of the employees told us to knock it off. On another occasion I was stopped and asked if I could change how I was wearing my small bag so it didn't look like a backpack (as the rules dont allow backpacks) this however was no big deal and was easily changed. The third and last occasion was inside a gallery that was dedicated to the kind of sarcastic witty art I love. One piece had words so small I came within a foot of the piece. An employee made their way over and told me to stay one foot from the piece, I wasn't leaning in so I believe they meant I should not point at it too closely either. After my first mistake I made ever effort to not do anything inappropriate but whether it was our age or just that particular set of staff we were always watched, and at points followed, through the gallery. The staff did approach us quietly though which I appreciate. All the same it's hard to enjoy art under stress.

You can find some of the most pretentious and uninspiring artwork here lately. The Walker capitalizes on the fact that Minneapolis is a white bread cultural desert and people desperate to see art will praise whatever garbage they throw up for display. The Walker has it's best decades well behind them.

My children (9 & 11) were not at all inspired/interested by the art here, most of the experience for them was "creepy" - I don't recommend for children. They liked the MIA much more!

First off, my wife and I love art museums so we came here suuupppeeerr excited and were soooo disappointed. Maybe I went during a poor showing or something but other than the sculptures outside, the "art" was of extremely poor quality. They literally had a picture of a butt repeated on a wall a hundred times or so. They also had a sign that simply said "F <insert someone's name>," a table with books on it (look at from a distance of course because it's art), etc. My wife and I both said to each other "it'll get better" when we first started our way through. It didn't. A poorly taken black and white photo of a lady with a fake mustache isn't art. Oh, there's also a picture of the corner of a cardboard box (not kidding). It looked like it was taken with a fast lens shot wide open so it at least had some bokeh. Similar to something you take when you get your first 50mm f1.8 lens. If you want to see real art, go to the Minneapolis Institute of Art (MIA), or the others located within 10 or so minutes from here.

Fabulous Walker Art Center and Gardens! I recently visited the Walker and was excited to see all the wonderful exhibits. Back in October I had a chance to tour the newly designed Sculpture Garden and was happy to see some of my sculpture favorites were still there. There are so many new sculptures in the Garden now! They'll become my new favorites with the beautifully redesigned Garden. Always a wonderful and exciting time when visiting the Walker!

A great way to spend a whole day! There are so many fascinating exhibits to enjoy, expand your horizons, and lose yourself in. The movie theatre usually has an interesting film to watch. the gift shop NEVER disappoints with unique things you didn't know you needed....The only downside can be the pricing for non-members if you are just going to be there once in a while. But it is worth it to go enjoy, if you have never been there before, do yourself a favor!

The facilities here are very modern; unfortunately, so is the art. About halfway through the galleries I wanted my money back. In all, there were only 2 or 3 pieces in the entire museum that did anything for me.

The adjoining sculpture garden was more of the same--the grounds were very nice, the sculptures very incomprehensible. Now if you like modern art then by all means pay these places a visit. If not, then stay very very very far away.

Loved the McGuire theater space, it was comfortable and intimate. If a bit confusing to find from the lobby...which really needs seating for the less able bodied. Not everyone can sit so low and get up with out falling down. The re-imaging of Swan Lake was profoundly beautiful. I wish it ran a whole month! I would have seen it again. I will definitely check out more offerings. I'll just not get there too early.

Waste of money and time. Pretentious is our description. Employees are standing near each exhibit which I understand, but they look like guards, not one smile returned. The Sculpture Garden is worth seeing and that part is free. For a fascinating and fun day go to the Minneapolis Institute of Art.
