I came to Virginia Mason under the Premera Centers for Excellent program for a knee replacement. Being in a large hospital that specializes in such surgeries I expected an assembly line program. The only time I got that experience was in pre op. I was actually one of the first to get into recovery so I had very personalized care. When I got to my room I had very personal and professional people taking care of me. I appreciated the volunteer services program which came up and visited with me both days I was in the hospital.

My back was hurt badly and I was totally unable to walk. I couldn't walk. The doc knew. The staff knew. They heard me screaming when trying to get in the wheelchair but they wanted me OUT of their busy emergency room because it was labor day and they were busy
No one cared that I couldn't walk at all , or how I was going to get into my building at home, nor offered to write a prescription for a wheel chair or provide recommendations. They sent me home to crawl on the floor unable to even sit on a toilet for a week. When I say crawl, I actually mean slither, dragging myself inches at a time. I ended up not being able to walk for almost two weeks.
It was the middle of the night and there was no where I could even BUY a wheel chair on my own.
When I got back to my building I had to crawl across the dirty downtown Seattle city SIDE WALK and my lobby floor and then into the elevator IN FRONT OF EVERYONE. It took me almost 40 minutes and was the most humiliating and painful experience of my life.
This was inhumane and I'm pretty sure it violated some of my rights.
Dr Kirsten Gage has been such a blessing to my family. A family member suffered a traumatic brain injury and as his physiatrist, she's been one of the absolute best doctors we've encountered. She handles everything from baclofen pump, to botox, and dry needling injections... Being able to see one doctor with multiple specialties makes it not only convenient but super efficient since she knows so much. Truly a caring doctor; she offers multiple approaches to problems and seeks patient preferences for the right solutions. Grateful we are under her care.
I am from Hawaii and I just had my wife go through the Medical Center. We had a scheduled appointment on a Tuesday with a pre-arranged primary care doctor. We had brought extensive records and imaging from doctors in Hawaii. Many tests were set up in a very short period of time. Very impressive how the various departments worked together in scheduling. We have to give them an A+ in this category. However, in getting any of the records and imaging to other departments did not happen. For some reason a lack of follow through. I still give them five stars their ability to thoroughly diagnose the problem and come up with a reasonable conclusion and plan. Cannot say enough good things about how we were treated and the positive attitude and smiles everyone had.. we would definitely return if need be.
The cafeteria is very good and affordable. However, The Inn at Virginia Mason is something else. The building was constructed in 1920. The rooms are nice and clean and housekeeping is good. However, we were not impressed with their medical rate. In fact, you could not make a reservation on line. When we called we were told $119 per night. Upon arriving the check in person coukd not find the medical rate. I asked the manager several days later what it was and he said $109;per night and that he would adjust the bill. Upon check out there was only bone night at the $109. I asked him to adjust the other nights and he refused. He went on to say the rate was seasonal and if you came in the summer months rooms are $50 night cheaper. In other words, if you can plan your sickness around the seasonal rates then you are better off. This rate structure sure does not coincide with the excellent service and staff you get at the Medical Center. You would think there would be a flat rate no matter what time of year. I would venture to guess that the majority of guests, if not all; are there for medical reasons.
The hospital looks a little old on the outside and even parts of the inside (though they are renovating), but the service has been top notch. I have been also to the U. Washington Medical Centre main hospital in north Seattle, which is a beautiful place, but what makes the difference is the care. Nearly everyone at VM, from the reception to the nurses to the physicians are kind and understanding and go out of their way to help. I have been also to the Cleveland Clinic, and Mayo, and I would say VM s care rivals that of Cleveland and is better than Mayo s. Even one of their top thoracic surgeons, Dr. Donald Low, spent a lot of time looking through my our case in great detail to make sure nothing was missed. We understand that patients travel to see him from many surrounding states for esophageal surgery and we can see why. Often, the more senior people won t spend much time with you, but at VM it s different. Dr. Flores, the oncologist, has also been really accommodating and took up our case when the oncologist at the BC Cancer Agency in Canada gave up on him. Just a wonderful hospital that I can wholeheartedly recommend.
I was with my sister to visit my mom in the hospital and some creepy bald guy named Brant Nara, who must have been off duty, started talking to us while we were in one of the waiting rooms. He kept telling us we were "really pretty" and he "loved our adorable asian features." We were able to leave and he didn't follow us but we were creeped out nonetheless. My mom's operation went smoothly but we will definitely be be looking for a different provider in the future. A hospital where I'm worried about my mother's health is the absolute LAST place I want to be hit on.
Never looked at my foot or leg, just I don't see anything, no direction to go! I have nearly died from my TKR. Got some help with chiropractor which insurance does not cover
The care and Love the Nephrologist and all that work with and around them have shown me nothing but, VIP treatment even though I'm not VIP but, they sure make me feel at home that's VIP to me I want to especially thank the Transplant Team and the Nephrologist doctors and the social workers that work with them to help us with transportation and supplies needed to better our appointments Thank you so much Virginia Mason for caring as much as you all do
My husband was admitted friday 4/26 for dialysis prep. We knew we had to stay and get dialysis started. Mon 4/29 we were told by the social worker Jonathan that we had to have a dialysis place set up before going home. On Thursday may 2 he said he found a place but it was a 3 hour drive to Port Townsend. They had a wrong name that they were looking for. We live in Tacoma. Now its mon 5/6 and they still dont have a place. He is stuck here and not happy.
The hospital itself, and the quality of the care, I give a five star rating, but, today I am receiving a seven hour infusion treatment, acrosd the street...the Linamend (?) building...and I appreciate the care...but no tv service, only Netflix, and that is not working...
My daughters surgery was scheduled for today. We were told to arrive by 9:30 am. We did. It's now 11:36 am and we just checked to see if she's been forgotten. Evidently they have 4 surgeries before her. Is there a reason patients aren't given a reasonable idea of what to expect? If we have to be here at 9:30 and know that it's a 5 1/2 hour wait (informed she won't get in till 3!!!!!)..... Additionally, the restrooms for the waiting families have no toilet paper or paper towels. How long does a restroom go unserviced for there to be no paper products? I'm really questioning this facility for future medical needs. The clerks at the main check-in desk at the hospital have been most helpful, the clerk at the surgery center check in, rude, abrupt, not forthcoming with information......Not so helpful. We were in line and the clerk called out over everyone "name?" We gave it to her. She told us to sit. That's it. We sat for about 20 minutes before we were able to actually check in. Not a warm or comforting environment.
My boyfriend was diagnosed with chronic sinusitis by his PCP after years of congestion, inflammation and decreased sense of smell, and he recommended surgery with Dr. Anstead. At his consultation, Dr. Anstead was very thorough in explaining his options, recovery time, pre-op preparation etc. and was reassuring and INCREDIBLY knowledgeable. He still continues to see Dr. Anstead regarding his sinuses due to the thoroughness, and her knowledge on his incredibly extensive sinus issues. She is the best at what she does, that is for sure, and I will be referring my patients to her if they are in need of an ENT
Thanks Laurie for being maybe the rudest operator ever. Cut me off and didn t even make sure I was being transferred correctly. That s who you guys have on staff?
While visiting friends,I observed that this medical facility has top-notch amenities for the Families, an visitors of their patients w/ great team's of specialists... The RealInternetMan
I ve been going to Virginia Mason for my primary care appointments since I moved to Seattle 19 months ago. Processes are nonsensical requiring multiple checkins, and staff at the internal medicine desk have always been less than helpful, and many times very rude. Today s experience takes the cake though, where it took 25 minutes to book my follow-up appointment. To clarify, that s 25 minutes after reaching the front of the line, the woman at the desk had no clue how to use the computer. Virginia Mason needs to re-evaluate their training and possibly hiring/screening process for the position. I don t have all day to spend at the hospital for a routine checkup.
This is specifically about Dr. Jonathan Clabeaux. Maybe he will work for you, maybe he won't, but he's quite questionable. I am quite young and have osteoarthritis in both hips, so I need bilateral hip replacements. I saw Dr. Clabeaux and he told me that he would be unable to do my surgeries because Virginia Mason has an overall policy of not doing surgery on people who are overweight because of infection risk. He specifically explained that because SOME people who are overweight have post-op complications and SOME of their insurance won't cover those complications that VMMC has a blanket policy. Well, I just learned this is NOT TRUE. I ended up finding another surgeon and had a very successful surgery/recovery.
Infection rates for orthopedic surgeons are online and Dr. Clabeaux has a low infection rate, but it appears he is turning away patients who HE feels would change that rate - as in FAT people. He actually told me that I could "use a cane". I am in my mid-forties, low co-morbidities, with two young kids and a very active job as a bedside nurse. He told me inaccurate rates of post-op infections in bariatric patients, and at the end of my appointment he did say he "could" schedule me but he would then be inconvenienced by emails questioning his decision to advocate for me, so he was declining me. It was a blatant case of unchecked bias, and bias is dangerous to peoples health.
On top of being lied to by Dr. Clabeaux, Virginia Mason's infection rate for hip replacements is not stellar (I did my research and went to the hospital that has the lowest infection rate in the whole area, which was NOT Virginia Mason). Clearly his efforts to exclude people who might be at higher risk for infection is not affecting the overall rates.
In the end it was not about me, my suffering or my pain. It was about him, his determination that I was not worth his advocacy and his infection rate. This is not a good doctor, even if his work is good, and I have friends who have used him for their surgeries and been disappointed. Am I disappointed with the person/hospital I ended up choosing? No. So for that, I must thank Dr. Clabeaux, because his poor treatment resulted in me finding not only the right care but also the best (Swedish, lowest infection rate in the area, OPA, amazing clinic).
I am a healthcare provider. My visit to Virginia Mason hospital for an orthopedic surgeon's appointment for hip surgery was the worst I've come across. After an extremely painful 12 hour round-trip the surgeon was NOT there and they did not notify me he was out. They also dropped the ball regarding paperwork and MRI about 5 times and the online portal, as another patient mentioned, was technically inadequate. To cap it all they did not process my billing correctly with Medicare. Upon talking to five of my patients I find that they all had similar experiences. One had a mentally challenged daughter waiting 12 hours for her operation without food after already fasting for 12 hours! On the other hand I went to Pro ortho in Seattle, waited only four days to see a surgeon and only three weeks for the operation. Virginia Mason made me wait 6 weeks for an appointment for the surgeon that was not there! Would not recommend them.
Waited 5 hours for treatment in ER. Asked the front desk person how much longer and they never knew. Did get taken back at the end of 5 hours, but had to sit on a bed out of a room, with no idea how much longer for treatment. Never coming back here again.
I received a satisfaction survey from this hospital before a bill, which is the epitome of my experience. Every person I came in contact with is caring and exceptional at their job.
Dr Schlenker operated on my arm and the scar is almost gone just three weeks after my surgery - he is truly a miracle worker! I don't think I will ever pick another hospital for my care again.
I suffered stomach pain and went to Virginia Mason ER. I have not seen a single doctor during the entire visit. Only a couple nurses, physician assistant showed up. All they did was running a couple of blood test, and urine test, and basically told me that I am not going to die. They did not run ultra sound, CT or MRI at all. They told me that they cannot figure out what was wrong with me, and prescribed me some antibiotics and discharged me. I went to another urgent care for my stomach pain a few days later, and the doctor told me that the antibiotics was unnecessary to take. So I called VM hospital and asked for advice, and they responded with NO confidence with their diagnosis and told me that I should follow the doctor 's advice from urgent care. I was very disappointed with my experience and wish I could visit somewhere else. BTW, I called the VM ask for the customer complaint number, that number was a joke! It was a voice box and has no representatives at all!
I think this is a wonderful hospital with professional & caring staff. I think my care-provider, Dr.Leonard from internal medicine, is absolutely the best. She is professional, knowledgeable, personable and very caring. I will continue to go to this hospital and I highly recommend my doctor and the hospital.
I have had other DR help me with my very large sore on my right foot --- from a study I was in @ SCCA to help those who had cancer surgery. I received the real test pill --- as apposed to the sugar imitation. SCCA DR removed me from the test program because I had developed sores on my toes & bottom of my feet. All of the sores have gone away after a few week except a very large one on the bottom of my right RIGHT FOOT that I have been fighting for about 4 years.
I received a referral from a friend to Dr. Almey @ VM who over a period of time has helped me to walk again on my right foot. She is very professional & empathetic...! I HAVE RECOMMENDED HER TO OTHERS & WILL CONTINUE TO DO SO!!!!
My father was here for four days and sadly passed away here. The staff in critical care and in comfort care were so wonderful. My father said they were saints! Thank you for taking such good care of him, for being so caring and sweet. You went out of your way to make sure he was not in pain and was comfortable. You truly are essential!!
Head and neck or ent department has the worst costumer service. Every time I call they have an attitude, I have filed complaint over a year ago too but looks like no training was done. I called 3 times this week and same problem. They don t wanna help and sound condescending, they cut you off and talk to you like your a child. They don t fix their own mistakes even they say they will take care of it. I call back and am asked about he mistake one of those schedulers made but didn t fix... will someone retrain the scheduling staff please?! Like how to talk to people, how to be professional and take care of own mistakes. Other then that, the nurses and doctors are amazing, but that doesn t make a huge difference if the first person you see and last one you see are the front desk schedulers who just make you feel frustrated.
Called to talk 2 administration and a code was n progress so I was put on hold, after I told her this was an emergency, just was in their hospital and had an issue,,,, after 15m in on hold I had to hang up...never go to this place for any help...
I found that they offer therapeutic massage here in affordable prices. The female therapist I met was very skilled and good at creating relaxed atmosphere. Unfortunately, I stopped visiting Seattle since it looked like it was out of order with unions and crimes, but I would like to come back to see her in future.
Best hospital I've been in , Doctors , Nurses & the rest of the staff were great ! They took good care of me . My room was kept clean & the food was ok " for a hospital " I highly recommend Virginia Mason Hospital to anyone .
Was sent here from the VA and I have say that this place is actually worse by far. The GI clinic is unable to coordinate between hospitals (the VA and itself), the portal is not user friendly and won't forward to email platforms that are able to operate on Android or IOS. The liaison software is super simple to write and why they haven't hired somebody to do it thus far is completely unprofessional. In my humble opinion and this is just coming from a veteran looking for care in a timely manner so I don't die, please choose another facility if you value your life and expect consistent quality care. The people working at this location do not take pride in their work so you will have to deal with pain and and BS the whole time. I'm sad and disappointed that I chose to get treatment at this facility over the VA. HOPE THE DIRECTOR GETS TO SEE THIS AND TAKES APPROPRIATE ACTION, CHANCES ARE IT JUST WON'T HAPPEN IN THIS PLACE WILL STAY THE SAME SO JUST AVOID IT.
Arrived for a procedure and was pushed back at least two hours so my ride couldn't stay and now I run the risk of dying because they couldn't perform their dutys properly.
Terrible place unfriendly staff and scheduling is a joke. I scheduled a 9am surgery. I got a call the the day before that they had changed it to 1:15pm then two hours later I get a call that it is at 10:15am. I get here at 9:30am and am told there was a mix up and that check in is not until 10:45am. Ok it sucks but ok. Then I'm told that I will not even get surgury until after 3pm. I have not eaten since 8pm last night and am told no food or water until after surgury. This place is a joke and I would not recommend it to anyone.
My daughter is there today getting a massive surgery please take good care of her she s a good person. She said it was a 5 star check in the people are all really nice!
Absolutely great hospital! I suffered from kidney failure for years, and was rushed here while having a heart attack, and ultimately had a kidney transplant here. The entire staff - doctors, nurses, aides, orderlies, social workers, etc. - were great, and extraordinarily helpful, and personable. The setting is comfortable, and even the food was good!
Finding your way around the hospital can be tricky, but the staff is helpful if you ask.
I go back every six months to monitor my transplant, and the doctors and nurses show genuine concern for me and my return to a more "normal" life.
I'm incredibly grateful for the care I received at Virginia Mason.
Things have gone downhill in the last 5 years, typical I guess of any big bureaucracy trying to do more than they are capable of I used to like their schedulers handling of things instead of doctors, without the nurses the doctors would get next to nothing done.... I am sure. that is also typical of most big hospitals
his is the beehive for Doctors. Parking is horrendous around here so give yourself extra time to park. Please don't park in my drive way. Very convenient location to see many many specialists: General, obgyn , back, heart, oncology...blah blah blah. They also have a lab on site ( but it is really expensive...lab corp is much more economical). Walgreens is also on site.
I contracted e-coli last July and stayed a few days in virginia mason. I dealt with some rude nurses, one of them violated the HIPAA act and told a family member my business, I was 27 at the time and perfectly capable of making my own decisions. I also took some bed bugs home with me after my stay, unbeknownst to me. I would give them 0 stars of that were an option. Worse experience of my life. Save yourself the trouble and go to Harborview.
It has everything you need. I was there for 4 months and my brother is a stroke survivor. Thank God we found this hospital. And all the nurses are very good people.
One of the Top Hospitals. With Some of the top Doctors the Country. I've been Traveling from Coeur d'Alene Idaho since 1999 to see my Gastroenterologist.
Left hand does not know what right hand is doing. Worst place with a-holes who do not give a rats ass about anyone but themselves. You would get better service at the dmv and we all know how they suck. Any other hospital would be better. I believe in accountability for your actions and they do not get this concept (just nothing but excuses).
Dr. On is an amazing ophthalmologist at Virginia Mason. He performed my eye enucleation and I couldn't be happier.
It's now been 2 1/2 years since my eye enucleation and it has been wonderful. Dr. On is an amazing surgeon. I called his personal cell phone at night after my surgery with questions and he immediately answered and helped put my mind at ease. He was able to save the muscles around my eye socket and my artificial eye moves just like my real eye. I have people ask if I can see out of it!! I can't recommend him and the hospital enough.
Before taking down ALL of my identity information, for scheduling a simple change to your process would be to ask the patient if they were referred by a primary care physician at the beginning of the call instead of after only to tell the patient I m sorry we can t accept you until you get a referral. It s called a qualifying question it will save your staff and the patient time and frustration.
