Not as exciting as expected. It's a tent with some exhibit made from cardboard, with a few dated equipments. Extra star goes to the guide staff. Only worth going if you are in mountain view for other business already and have an hour to kill.

Excellent place to visit, unfortunately from the point of view that I located it was inaccessible since it was protected by many security fences. Definitely one of the best places to photograph and take the memory of how close you were to NASA: It is seen that they work a lot on energy saving issues because you see huge panels.

Good place to visit. The entrance and parking for the visitor center is free. You must do a reservation online if there is group of 10+ visitors. The merchandise is so cool as well. Make sure that you take a selfie with the space suit!

On December 20, 1939, The National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) founded NASA Ames (named after "Joseph Sweetman Ames" on December 20, 1939) Research Center as an aircraft research laboratory and in 1958; it became part of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

Ames was "originally" founded to engage in wind-tunnel research on the aerodynamics of propeller-driven aircraft; however its role has developed to encompass spaceflight and information technology.

Ames plays a critical role in many of today's NASA missions in support of America's space and aeronautics programs and Moffett Field is one of 10 NASA field installations.

Ames is a leader in information technology research with a focus on super computing, networking, intelligent systems, and conducts the critical research and development that make NASA missions possible.

It leads in nanotechnology, fundamental space biology, biotechnology, aerospace and thermal protection systems, and human factors research.

Their research in astrobiology focuses on the effects of gravity on living things, and the nature and distribution of stars, planets and life in the universe.

In addition, Ames works collaboratively with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), conducting research in air traffic management to make safer, cheaper and more efficient air travel a reality.

Ames engages in information and education outreach, forms collaborative partnerships, and fosters commercial application of NASA technologies. Ames is developing the NASA Research Park, an integrated, dynamic research and education community created to cultivate diverse partnerships with academia, industry and non-profit organizations in support of NASA's mission.

Ames operates one of the world's fastest supercomputers, Pleiades, which will be further enhanced and is scheduled to reach 10 petaflops of processing power by 2012.

Although Ames is a NASA Research Center, and not a flight center, it has nevertheless been closely involved in a number of astronomy and space missions.

From 1965 to 1978, the "Pioneer space program's" eight successful space missions were managed by Charles Hall at Ames, initially aimed at the inner solar system.

In 1972, Ames supported the bold flyby missions to Jupiter and Saturn with Pioneer 10 and Pioneer 11. Those two missions were trail blazers (radiation environment, new moons, gravity-assist flybys) for the planners of the more complex Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 missions, launched five years later.

In 1978, the end of the program saw a return to the inner solar system, with the Pioneer Venus Orbiter and Multiprobe, this time using orbital insertion rather than flyby missions.

On September 28, 2005, both Google and Ames Research Center went into a long-term research partnership. The Planetary Content Project seeks to integrate and improve the data that Google uses for its Google Moon and Google Mars projects.

Our visit:
So my son was doing a school project on space and one of the requirements was to visit the "NASA's Ames Research Center in Moffett Field" to obtain further information on space exploration.

Moffett Field used to be a thriving military base but "thanks our government's 1991 reorganization" which included base closures, NAS Moffett Field was closed!"

The gift shop was set up in such a way that it looked like you were walking into another museum, at least, that's my thought. The gift shop had planes hanging from the ceiling with maps and paintings on the wall and other items that was fun to look and a lot of material relating to the space program.

Overall, it was a good place to tour NASA's space program but there's not much else to do on this base.

Construction of the new Google project which is near Google's Googleplex headquarters began in 2013 and has a target opening date of 2015.

It's called "Bay View" as it overlooks San Francisco Bay ("Review pending!").

Very disappointed with NASA, drove from LA because I read online that have a visitor area there, unfortunately that day was closed,...the problem start when the security guy approaches us, and with very bad face ask us to leave, so I asked him in a very polite way if he can give me some advice on how it work.. and in a very rude way and the worse face he said .. this is not public and I already told you to leave!.. I was trying to find out if make sense for me to wait one more day at the hotel, and I was in the impression that there is a visitor area there.. I felt so disappointed that I drove back to LA same day, the worse part is the Kids have a high expectations of NASA, and now they perceptions are made base on that experience.. they don t even want to come back because they feel intimidated for the people that NASA have in the entrance. They are 10 and 11 and the reason of my trip was because one of them chose NASA as a school project. Now he doesn t want to do it anymore. GOOD JOB NASA!

I have been here twice, once for the Airship ventures and another time for the shuttle endeavor sighting. Overall this place is awesome, love the hangars and the vast space they have. I'm glad they are set up so close to where I work that it makes it so easy to spot them from my building and we get to see flights test routes going in and around. If you have not been here make a visit and check it out.

I have no idea why this is tagged as the NASA Ames Research Center. It should be updated to NASA Gift Shop. I was incredibly underwhelmed; they only have a capsule, a few model satellites, a wind tunnel blade and some other small items. Otherwise it s a straight up gift shop. Not worth your time unless you want a NASA sweatshirt

I went here to visit a friend that works at NASA and was surprised to find there was a museum! It was cool to see the history of the space program and NASA as well as the exhibits of the planets...reminded me of a planetarium. My friend gave me a tour around campus and I enjoyed seeing the old buildings and airplanes up close for the first time.

The lady staff is very friendly and full of knowledge, she really can answer all kind of questions. However, the display is a little bit too simple, not enough material to explore. Fortunately It's free and the restroom is clean.

It must be known that it is above all a shop of objects derived from NASA. It is not a museum even though there is the first uninhabited capsule that was launched for a rocket. There is also a screen that shows movies on NASA. On the subject side he has clothes for infants to adults, cups, keychains, Lego. All proceeds go to NASA's charities. Parking is free and there is a toilet inside.

Visitor center is temporarily closed for renovations and re-opens end of the year (now Oct 2018).
However you can go further in and view the Moffet Field Historical Society Museum - which is really awesome.

Sad place. Used to come here at least once a year to see the exhibits. It slowly transformed into just a gift shop with 4-5 exhibits only and a moving on a projector. Should be simply called AMES Gift Shop.

It is quite interesting to introduce the cases where NASA technology is used in everyday life. You can also buy souvenirs.

You can take bus number 81 from Mountain View Station.

In space development-related, Mercury spacecraft, moon rocks carried by Apollo 15, front and rear tires of the space shuttle and solid rocket booster SRB fixing bolt The real thing (fixing one SRB) is exhibited.
There is also a mock-up of the ISS, and you can try out the equipment used for astronauts' daily 2-hour muscle training. There is also a NASDA (now JAXA) glove box.

Small and boring exhibition, almost all interactive parts are broken. The models are very primitive. No access to the research center itself, e.g. the hangar will be far away from your eyes

They have a green building called Sustainability Base full of technologies with great capacity to save energy. It does not produce waste and uses many innovations implemented in space such as solid oxide batteries from Mars exploration vehicles, reuse systems of filtered water, waste compactors, vegetable cultivation without sunlight ...

When arriving the visitor's place seems small, but it's awesome. At first time there we got luck to have a tour with Margareth, one of the docents. She is amazing, knows lots of information and great facts. Best visit ever!
Remember to spend some time at the gift store, cool stuff and the money goes to Nasa researchs.

I was in June 2012. It is similar to other nasa centers. Although there is a visitor center with models of spacecraft information about the NASA. The penalty is that you can not access the ames center since invitation and authorization are required. It is a bit of a shame to be next door and not be able to enter to visit it and have to settle for the visitor center that is outside the premises. It is similar to the center what about NASA in Robledo de chavela, Madrid

A bit underwhelming for nasa standards thought it would be more exciting... It kinda leaves me with more questions than answers in a not good way, But again it was free; so can't complain too much.

Visited here after the visit to Computer History Museum. Too many clothes based memorabilia here. Finally found some interesting colour changing pencils, mugs and some kids stuff. Most of the tshirt had prints which felt rough and of middling quality. If the tshirt had better print, probably would have bought one.
