I love china town. There's plenty of shops, and the people are generally pretty friendly. It's thankfully not too crowded most of the time.
Seriously DON'T USE THE PUBLIC RESTROOMS THOUGH. Bad idea. I had to use hand sanitizer to clean every seat before sitting down, because there was pee, blood, etc all over the toilets in every building I went to.

I love Chinatowns, but the Vancouver Chinatown is not worth visiting, because most storefronts are empty. The only attraction is the Sun Yat-Sen Chinese garden.

Chinatown seems to be becoming a relic of the past - as a young Chinese Canadian, I find myself drawn more to Richmond. Though it does have its history, the proximity to East Hastings (well known for its population of drug addicts and homeless people) tends to turn people off. Sadly, the majority of people who frequent Chinatown are either tourists, or the elderly. It's heartbreaking to see how Vancouver's Chinatown has become a ghost of what it was, only twenty years ago.
(That being said, it's not all bad. If you get past the sketchiness of the surrounding area, you can find a lot of authentic Chinese shops and markets around. A lot of culture still remains in the area, you just have to brave East Hastings.)
