I have been going to the VA Long Beach for 6 years now. I have never ONCE had a bad experience, ever. When I got lost during the remodeling, a janitor went out of his way to get me to the right elevator I was looking for. This, for me, has been the rule, rather than the exception. Every staff member there has gone out of their way to be helpful, even if they were in a different department. Sure, everyone has bad/frustrating days, but in 6 years I haven't run into anybody that showed it to me... Thanks!

If you have to go to the hospital this is the one, as a veteran, you want to head to. Our level of care and specialty clinics are the bar all other hospitals strive to reach. Our grounds and side programs, such as the patient garden, lapidary shop, wood shop extend a level of care unmatched by all but the most elite hospitals worldwide.

I took a picture of the white building on the VA grounds today. Suddenly security policemen pulled up and lectured me on what a serious violation it was. The SAME picture that's on your website for the WORLD to see. Lol

What a awful place, I am a veteran and they treat veterans like if you where still in the service, the VSO. Department make you feel like you're begging them for what you work so hard to really deserve, they feel superior to you, what shame.

I usually do not write bad reviews but I feel the general public must know how terrible the VA Long Beach truly is. If you value your life do not use the Emergency Department here. The 2 different PA's here have misdiagnosed AND prescribed the wrong medication twice and have left their marks on my health. Other services rendered here are not nearly as bad but the services treated to myself and other veterans are not up to par.

Nothing but good things to say about VA long beach staff and care. I'm an ex combat corpman and I know how patients should be treated in a combat zone or a hospital setting. Thank you VA long beach for caring for me as I did for them.

If you have time to block my number you have time to answer the phone, super rude.

Good place, good people work here, everyone got a story. Even myself.
With my grandfather whom fought in WW2, as well as my farther in Vietnam.
If you see me there then you know I'm going to one of the many ice machines for preventative maintenance services.
Expect the machine to be down 3 hours minimum 4 hours maximum

The people at Long Beach have been great, especially considering their work load. I've always considered myself fortunate and privileged to have access to the VAHC services. They've always taken care of me when I've needed their help.

I am sorry.... I do not mean to offend anyone but I will be honest and speak on behalf of all the Veterans who are not receiving proper medical treatment. The VA rushes you in and out of your visits as fast as possible. Masking any and every problem with medications, rather than fix the cause. The Long Beach VA is the most mismanaged VA hospital in California, from the director on down. I am 100% service connected and decided to use my money to pay our of pocket for Kaiser insurance. Within one month of being with Kaiser my quality of life improved 100%. For almost 4 years I placed my life in the hands of the VA medical center and was lucky enough to walk away before any more damage was done. I ended up needing parts of my liver removed to undo the VA's damage and have permanent damage done to my kidneys. I know for many of us there is no other option than the VA. Be your own advocate and keep notes and if worse comes to worse head to another hospital. Most ER doctors are familiar with the mediocre care of the VA medical system. I will however say that Women's health and he psychiatry departments are very thorough and do their job well.

I spent five days in the hospital after being admitted from the ER. No hospital visit is pleasant, but this one was as good as it could have been anywhere.
I am grateful for the excellent care I have received both in the hospital and from my primary care physician. My friends dealing with Medicare have more problems in the private sector than I do with the VA.
Our entire country is having trouble with the healthcare system. Those who complain about the VA don't realize what is going on elsewhere.
Thanks to the staff at the Long Beach VA.

Best thing that ever happened to me. Everyone is friendly, polite, helpful, and makes you feel like they are glad to help you get the best care possible. I'm proud to be a vet, and glad I have Long Beach Hospital to take care of me.

The office did not advocate for me in any way.
The employee was rude and condescending on both visits.
The office also would not provide any paperwork or email as to the advocacy provided and conclusion.

The very professional L.A. Sepulveda VA doctors and staff went out of their way to expedite my two morning appointments in order that my friend could drive me to my 1:00 p.m. endoscope appointment at the Long Beach VA. Both he and I took off work so I could be on time to all three appointments at both VA facilities. Five minutes away from the Long Beach VA facility I get a cell call that my appointment is just a consult and not necessary. I told them my consult is the following Friday, my procedure is today at 1:00. The Long Beach VA employee insisted they were right and cancelled my appointment, so we turned around to drive home another 1 1/2 hours on a rainy freeway. Later, I checked the appointment letters they sent to me and found I was right. It was actually the bariatric surgeon who called in the instructions to cancel a procedure he wasn't even involved with, thinking it was a consult with him. I won't mention the name of this doctor, but if he is this careless with my schedule he might ultimately be just as careless with my surgery.
I was admitted for a knee broken in 6 pieces. The...
I was admitted for a knee broken in 6 pieces. The nursing staff (RN's and CNA's) were the best and the worst. The best were attentive, caring, patient, and overall very good. The worst were impatient, uncaring, well, they made it the worst hospital experience I have ever had. I was operated on by a resident. He was caring and listened...didn't have the usual arrogance some orthopedic surgeons have. He was gone before my first follow-up visit. My grump, though, was that a "resident" did the surgery. The follow-ups began with the nurse practitioner. I requested a "doctor". I have been seen by residents. Two of them were in such hurries, I didn't get questions answered. They would be on their cell phones checking other things the "whole" 20-minute appointment. After they walked out (seemed the norm), I would wait. A nurse would walk in and say I was done and could go. I'd say I was waiting to finish up with the doctor with my questions. I'd be told he (they) left for lunch. My last visit I met a lady who was the manager of the dept. I told her I was tired of not being listened to, not having questions answered, and the general courtesies a patient should experience from a doctor visit. She spoke with the chief resident and he saw me. I needed paperwork filled in and signed. It was done hurriedly. Downstairs, I looked at it and saw it wasn't completed. My husband saw and got his attention down the hall. He came because my husband insisted. He did the paper work with another pen. He messed up, which we didn't know until later. It is still not done and needed to be turned in. When I called, I rarely got called back...When there, my husband overheard one person telling another (dept. employees) that it didn't matter what time the appointment was. they saw people like the ER. The more important ones were seen first. We could get there at 10 a m and not be seen until just before lunch, get hurried while in, etc. We saw one elderly man sitting in his wheel chair when we got there. After we waited quite a while, and were done and leaving at lunch time, he was still sitting in the same place. I asked him if he was seen yet. No. Nine of 10 things I needed written by them were incomplete, or incorrect. When I got the papers back, the person who wrote them would often be gone and I'd have to wait til after lunch and then some more after that, or...........Back to the hospital stay of 14 days. The food was NOT good quality, and, with the exception of 3 meals, wasn't even good. The 2 Saturdays there, lunch was a hamburger on a bun with one thin slice each of tomato, onion, and lettuce. There was a side of more carbs (e.g. mashed potatoes, garlic bread). There was the drink and a small sugary fruit cup or applesauce. For dinner, a large frankfurter, bun, drink, small fruit cup, and the most awful small bowl of bean concoction. I had this 2 Saturdays in a row. When I shared a room with a woman with cancer, she was served the regular meals with bacon, sausage, etc. Those foods (bacon, sausage, hot dogs, ham, etc.) have sodium nitrite and other cancer-causing chemicals in them. I was told the food was trucked in daily from Los Angeles. I kept my "menus" to show what I ate. I also have photos I took of some of the meals. Yes, I have photos of the frankfurter meal. I have often stated that the VA hands out x-rays as if they were lollipops. I won't go there now.

Best VA I've ever been to. The people actually seem to care and most of the facilities are updated. They have a great shuttle system to get you to and from the many buildings. There is ample staff on site and many volunteers to assist you.

Have a list of your questions as the nurses posing as doctors will usually not ask.
Keep asking for medical evaluations that you need, definitely second opinions when you have a big issue, one idiot (who was actually a doctor) there told me that his "gut feeling" was that I was ok, I insisted that they run more tests, they subcontracted to UCI and verified that I was correct.
Most of the staff has good intentions but lack the time to education to really troubleshoot.
I have been happy with their service overall. But ideally get a second opinion. In the past I have even gone to local affordable clinics (a few days prior) to get better educated, then I get the medicines and additional tests from the VA to save money.
Bottomline get second opinions.

The majority of the staff are across the board AMAZING. Dermatology, the Infusion Clinic, and the nursing staff at OP-132 are super hardworking and go out of their way to assist the patients. They all deserve a long overdue Thank You.
The ER on the other hand, would be the type of parent to leave a baby on top of a car, like a 7/11 decaf in a leaky cup. Major improvements in attitude, attentiveness, and bedside manor are just as long overdue as the Thank You's for the rest of the Hospital.
The level of accountability of the VA is inexcusab...
The level of accountability of the VA is inexcusable. They won't return calls, I've had appointments cancelled on me 2 hours prior to appt time, and I can't get any answers. I've been trying to get my back looked at for months. One inconclusive x-ray and some muscle relaxers later I'm no better off. I have trouble walking, I can't run, and some days I just wish I wasn't here. My first physical therapy appt was a "back class" for 5 min on how to sit and lift then given another appointment 2 weeks later.
No one admits any issue with anything other than that's just being complacent with these faults and telling me to just call in and hopefully find another appointment. Incompetency and mediocrity is pervasive throughout this hospital and the surrounding satellite clinics.
Of course the administration's answer is to just throw money at it until the problem goes away. As soon as I can afford it I'm going with private healthcare. The level of care here is a joke.

N.P. Ross in Neurology, all of the staff in the Acupuncture Dept, the RN's inside of the ER and Dr. Smith from 3rd flr primary care clinic, ECHO are the most professional and wise people. They're all willing to answer any and all questions of the vet's and our family members, these people are at the top of their game; they truely care about the veterans. It is so sad that the local civilian hospitals and their staff all pale in comparison to the Long Beach VA Hspl on their best days.

My sister had a brain tumor , was a veteran of Active Duty in Okinawa, retired from 20 years in the reserve, was activated for the Gulf War(Desert Storm) Served on Naval Hospital Ship in the Gulf during the War there but was refused any Veterans Healthcare which she was entitled to by the United States Veterans Administration and Long Beach Healthcare system , had all the proof for them but she was turned down, she died 2 months later.VA Long Beach Healthcare System was a was a complete failure to a Veteran who served her Country in War and Peace, with retirement from the active Reserve and active service in the U.S. Navy along with serving as a nurse in a War zone yet no one, not even the administrator corrected the situation at Long Beach VA Hospital. Yet Long Beach Hospital never took any action to correct the unprofessional handling of the whole situation, not even an apology to a deserving Veteran

Dispickable... The Emergency Room sucks... and the staff lie... big time...
Went in at 1800 hrs... didn't get seen by the trauma nurse for a hour and a half... after that... another hour to get 2 x rays taken... which took less than a min... then another 3 hours waiting...
when question'n the nurse... all I get is we're busy... and some more (do you believe me Fabrication to get you pacified..) their comment was.. we had a lot of people in today... yet I counted only about 12.. some of which had been their before me and still waiting...
the best part was .. it was determined that I had the flu... even without a blood pan'l being done... wow... crystal ball gazing time ? ... They said they had 2 doctors on staff... I went back and asked where the doc was... I was told that they were on break.... an hour later I did it again.. and I was told that they went to dinner... really... Caught one in the hallway... and asked when I was going to be seen... his reply... was mumble mumble... and exit stage right... after almost 6 hours... I was cut free...
But wait theirs more... seems that the effecency of the department leaves a lot to be desired... as I was wondering why after the x ray... their was no single nurse that did blood work... to send off to the lab... why did the doctor have to do it... so they said... but really doesn't....and with all the excuses... one wonders if they are doing real med... or being fake med;s...phonies...
I was told that I had the flu... ok... on the way home I just didn't believe 'em at that point... so stopped at another medical pay for service... and within 30 min was told.. sir you have bronchial phenomena and given Antibiotics to take...
Now is the VA open for malpractice ... and mis diagnosis due to incompetent of the staff... ?
Medical malpractice occurs when a hospital, doctor or other health care professional, through a negligent act or omission, causes an injury to a patient. The negligence might be the result of errors in diagnosis, treatment, aftercare or health management. If I lied to my boss I'd be fired... yet its ok to stroke a patent... about their health... who ya going to trust now is my feeling.
Yet these people at the Long Beach VA keep getting paid... wow...
lets make the VA great again.. management should get the hatchet out and these people tonight lose their job... as who could trust them again...
Sure they take a report.... and right after you file it it gets filed in the round file no doubt... how many people have they killed this week...???
... and yes you can bet I am filing with my congress person...and cc the big man... something needs to be done at the VA and stop the bogus, false, fake, fraudulent, spurious pseudo, sham
If the flu is a large no of patents... then why don't they have a advise nurse or RN taking care of them.. and unloading the doctors?... I am sure its cookie cutter technology... but then again where is the supervisor? No one in management was even on the property... go figure... and this is a hospital staffed 24/7... don't think so... maybe if the management had to work along side the doctors and nurses...on site.. maybe things would get better ???

I'd like to share my very frustrating and discouraging experience dealing with the VA Hospital psychiatry department so perhaps others can avoid making mistakes that I have made after many years of voluntarily receiving treatment that I myself requested from the VAMC Psychiatry Department at a different VA Hospital I decided to change hospitals because the hospital that I was receiving my care at prior to receiving care at the Long Beach VA Hospital was not helping my psychiatric condition but only making it worse as well as creating new health problems and psychiatric side effects/disorders because of the doctor prescribed psychiatric drugs that I was taking and that is why I chose to try a new hospital in the hope that I would receive proper treatment for my condition at a new hospital but that has not been the case when I voluntarily requested treatment at this Hospital I informed them of my symptoms and that I had been previously misdiagnosed at the pryor Hospital and as usual they have you fill out a lengthy questionnaire that basically allows anyone to perform the function of a so-called mental health care professional regardless of their competence if you tell them that you desire treatment for your condition but do not wish to do anything bad to yourself or anyone else they will tell you to go away and come back in a month or two when you have an appointment and there's really no guarantee things will go differently when you return I know they never did for me they're just trying to think of something to tell you to get you out of their office so they don't have to deal with you I remember one particular time specifically when I requested help I was told that because I waited this long I shouldn't have a problem waiting a few months longer it's basically the same thing as when a new person arrives at their Squadron or unit and then are sent to different work centers to retrieve fictional items that do not exist but except here it's requesting appointments for future visits or perhaps going to see the patient advocate you're basically being ignored if you do not listen to them and demand treatment because your condition is bothering you and you are suffering and are tired of being ignored and want proper medical treatment they can label you as psychic and do what they will with you so it's your choice be ignored and leave or don't leave be locked up drugged and then ignored and they have a lot of different drugs that are really good at interfering with your thought processes, reasoning ability and ability to remain conscious and those are the ones they like to give you to drug you and make you easier to deal with/ignore it's really your choice so if you tell them that you intend on, or have thought about doing something on their list of thought crimes then you will be taken into custody and drugged and stripped of all of your rights until they decide otherwise and although they may release you they really do not feel the need to restore your rights if you end up being misdiagnosed they would rather continue to give you treatment for what you do not have than admit that they were wrong and then you may never get the proper treatment because so far that has been my personal experience they just do not appear to care they just want you to go away, for good perhaps or maybe they are just completely incompetent from my personal experience if you go there requesting treatment for a condition that is causing you distress you'll be turned away and ignored as long as the record shows that they followed their yes/no lock them up let him go incarceration flowchart checklist the one which they are completely incapable of functioning without they really dont appear to care what happens to you after you leave because the best case scenario for them is that they won't have to deal with you again anyone who repeatedly comes here voluntarily requesting treatment even after receiving improper treatment is obviously desperately trying to get real help

Your VSO Sucks!!! I traveled all the way down here to get paperwork filled out and their is only one person authorized to fill it out and he or she isn't here. I was told to go to Los Angeles. I dont have transportation like that or money to be traveling. I was also told to come back. Really? I need this paperwork today. This place ruined my day once again.

The medical care is good if you can get in the facilities. Between the people that go there just to hang out and the CSULB students that use the parking lot for school there is simply no where to park some days. Circling the oceans of cars for 30 minutes I just give up sometimes and go home

A little confusing with the construction as where to go, but every person I spoke with was professional and very friendly. My wait times were very short and I was dealt with quickly. I really like the look of the new construction and the retro addition to the old. I should have come here years ago but felt guilty since I didn t serve in combat, however, they told me to look at it as one of the benefits of serving and that it wasn t my fault the first Gulf war started shortly after I got out.

I have been going to various VA Health Care Systems, for the last three years. I know that it all a matter of the numbers that are needed to be seen and the urgency in which they are needed to be seen. I have never objected to waiting for service anywhere. Government facilities or Civilian. I must state though that in my experience of needing some walk in testing done, I was seen immediately. That was surprising in itself. I have had nothing but excellent care there. Excellent care throughout the VA system. Regardless of how busy they may or not be.

Horrible service. I lived in area and went in for an implant. Had the shaft put in early 2020. Necessary to wait till July for the area to heal to fit the rest of the way (all reasonable). But I moved to Nebraska in April because my mother has Alzheimer s. I explained this to my doc and after discussions, it would still be best for them to complete it, so Communicated I would make a trip back for the appointment 9 July.
I get here, and the appointment is CANCELLED! I spent a lot of money on airfare hotels and a rental just for this appointment that they originally scheduled.
Reason for cancellation was supposedly because of everything going on...yet they said I could come back in 2 weeks!?!? Really!
Oh, I did get an email....3 days before! And maybe my bad for not reading, bit the title showed This is a reminder that you have one or more upcoming VA Appointment(s) , so of course knew I had appointment (3 that day for this). And thr cancellation happened 3-days before coming out? Tickets were already purchased anyway.

Called the Human Resources Office at the Long Beach HCS and was told that courtesies Physicals were not given at that VA, but the lack of customer service is what truly got me, so I in turn called the Operator to request Occupation Health to find out if the Long Beach VA truly did not perform Courtesies due to my lack of belief in the HR personnel, the Operator answered the phone with zero emotion and transferred me to a number that did not work and when it sent me back to the operator I told the man that the phone must have transferred me back to him, he hung up on me. I can tolerate a lot, but the lack of customer service and consideration to veterans and other VA's calling to get in contact with someone is not and should not be tolerated.

Apparently going to the ER there is a coin flip on whether you'll see a doc or not. Instead I wasted 3 hours and I'm back to step 1. Heading to a regular ER or all the way to San Diego's VA.
They all seem to busy wondering why I don't got to my county's VA ? Or register through them.
Maybe because it's a emergency?
I'm glad I went to San Diego for service. It's worth the drive for quality care .

I would give this place zero stars if I could. This post is more towards physical therapy rather than the entire VA hospital, however the rest of the hospital is not so great. Physical therapy has a horrible policy of making you wait if you get there a little late. Rather than cutting my appointment from 40 to 20 minutes they would rather not see me at all. Their policy is to make the person wait if they show up late, and if the person scheduled after them is more than 15 minutes late then they will see you. Rather than seeing me at my 8 AM appointment they would have seen me at 8:55 AM only if the 8:40 does not show up.
The gentleman behind the desk told me it would be a disservice to see me for less than 40 minutes. However, making me wait for over half an hour and possibly not being seen at all is not a disservice. How does that make sense? I would have happily only been seen for 20 minutes, or even half an hour because there was still over half an hour until 8:55, but me waiting or not being seen is a better option than half an appointment.
I never want to go back. My disdain for this department and hospital is palpable.
I was only a few minutes late because I do not know where building 150 room V8 is. I live in the South Bay, I live closer to the Wilshire location, but choose not to go there because it will take me an hour to get there in traffic during 8 or 9 am appointments, going to Long Beach is usually half that time. Finding parking takes forever, as several other cars including me circle waiting to see someone leave. I go to building 126 first, I know there's a map there that will tell me where building 150 is. Turns out building 150 is about a 3 minute walk away.
I take the elevator to the basement, and don't see the sign right away for room V8. I wander the hallways in the basement before I circle back to room R8 and ask where room V8 is. Turns out it's to the right of the elevator once you exit, I went left. Having a sign as soon as you get off the elevator would be great. All of this contributed to my tardiness.
I know you are suppose to call if you do not make your appointments, and I have never once missed an appointment, I have been late, especially if it's my first time going to a new building. I really hate this place. I cannot convey the feeling of rudeness their policies made me feel. Worse part is there is no recourse for any of this. Many times I have been insulted or treated rudely and never do my complaints go anywhere, there is no way to do anything about this.
The VA needs to realize that many of us suffer from horrible sleeping issues, driving in traffic is one of my worse things I can do, I try not to drive especially in traffic. I only chose this stupid date and time because it was the next appointment, I waited 2 months to have it, just to be told, oh, you need to wait and possibly not be seen. Screw you. The early morning appointments where the traffic is worse need to be understood, the mental issues many of us suffer from need to be understood.
All I wanted was to talk to a doctor about my left shoulder, my physician referred me, and it was just thrown away. The pain in my left shoulder is real, it hurts me on a daily basis, restricts my movement of that shoulder, and I cannot lift as much as I use too. This is service connected, as it happened at NTC this past February, I am still in the Army reserves, was active. Going to this appointment and being treated rudely reminds why I did not go to the VA for a year and a half, they simply do not care.
Only go here if you have no other choice, and be prepared to be treated poorly.
