As someone who has devoted class and personal time to the study of genocide as a broad topic and looked into many 20st century genocides in depth, I can honestly say this museum is a must for anyone interested in the subject. The attention to every last detail is incredible. The staff is all knowledgeable or can point you in the right direction and they all take their solemn job with a serious pride. As many museums as I've visited this one is by far the most detail oriented in my opinion.

What an experience

What an experience
Not just informing you
But in the main exhibit more or less forcing an experience on you

Everyone needs to visit this museum. Eye opening experience for everyone that is unsure about the events that took place during the Holocaust. Seeing the display of all the shoes is gut wrenching. Just know this museum is a quiet somber place as well.

The lines to get in during busy seasons, even with pre-ticketing, can be extreme. However, visiting this museum is one of the most powerful experiences I've ever had. There are exhibits and experiences for all ages.

It's hard to put 5 stars to say I love this place especially since it displays such a tragic event in human history. I loved this place though because it not only covered what was happening to the Jews but how others such as gypsies were also being accosted. When I learned back in grade school seemed to only be such a small amount compared to the bigger picture of what was going on. This is a must do if you are in the area.

The museum was very big and if you only have a couple hours I wouldn't recommend. The place was very crowded and had a very long wait list if you get there and expect to pay there. The people were very nice though and we didn't have a lot of time to go, so the person actually let us go in free which was amazing

Free museum in Washington DC. Very interesting and informative museum. A child friendly exhibit on the lower floor, and 3 additional floors with information about the treatment before, during and immediately after WW2. Thoroughly enjoyed and spent about 4hs throughout the museum.

There was a good mix of static displays in addition to photographs depicting the Holocaust. I learned a few things I didn't know before, such as how Jewish tombstones were used to make a walkway. Also, stories of European Jews joining or starting resistance movements added a few more details to what I know about the Holocaust. Additionally, all displays are done in chronological order and add context that helps you gain a fuller appreciation for how tragic this period of history was. It's well worth seeing either for an introduction to the Holocaust, for a refresher or for a more detailed understanding of this important period of history. Many displays can be real tear jerkers, so be prepared for that as well.

I've been to many Holocaust memorials in the past including Auschwitz and Treblinka. This Museum does Justice to the horrible. In world history. I especially liked the personal stories in video with comfortable seating to stop and pause and take in what really happened then. Museum is it comfortable experience with the opportunity to move slowly and taking everything there is. There is no background music and everyone is lost in their own personal thoughts. It is certainly worth seeing once, but I plan to go back there often. One can never forget...

The permanent exhibition is well worth a visit and Daniel's Story explains some basics of the Holocaust to young children. The current temporary exhibit "Some Were Neighbors" is a chilling tale of "man's inhumanity to man."

You have to get tickets online at 6 am in the morning the day you want to visit (tickets are FREE), else you can only see 2 floors of essentially nothing. Museum has a small cafe detached from the main building that serves all diets (Get there a little before noon).
In the museum itself I enjoyed the 14 minute prelude video to how Hitler even came to power. You embody the journey of everyone who suffered through the holocaust - a must see for D.C.

There are special exhibits and the permanent exhibits - make sure to reserve a spot online for the permanent as it s limited to a certain amount of people at one time. The special exhibits are always open to everyone.

An incredibly well done museum telling the story of the holocaust. It is very detailed with personalized stories telling the entire story of the events that happened. It is very heavy material so I would not recommend for small children but for more mature children it is very educational.

It doesn't seem right to say that I liked it, because it is heartbreaking, but it is incredibly interesting and humbling. It's a much bigger version of the Holocaust Museum in Houston, Tx, and much more detailed. There was a corridor that, as you get closer, there's a strange smell. When we turned into it, there were thousands of shoes. Shoes from the victims. It was like a punch to the gut to see all those shoes, all different sizes, including tiny little ones. It took a lot to not cry looking at those baby shoes

I've been to a few Holocaust memorials and museums around the world, including Dachau Concentration Camp in Germany, and this one in DC is just as powerful, if not more so, than all of them. I don't remember too many details of trips I took in elementary school 15 years ago, but this museums remains vivid in my mind.

Holocaust Museum. Very impressive, although the experience there was much more difficult for me. The museum is very large and chronologically organized, beginning with the Nazis' rise to power and the horrors they carried out until the war ended. Instead there are guides who lead groups and can join freely along the museum route, but you can always walk around independently. The architectural features of the museum are very interested and emphasize the theme.
There is a view dedicated to the part of the United States by not doing much to prevent the Holocaust and absorb the thousands of refugees who could escape the inferno even before and after the war ...
Sometimes there are Holocaust survivors to talk to.
You can deposit (free) old coats in the lobby before the tour starts.
Visiting is highly recommended and important.

I cannot put into words the experience I had visiting this museum. But GO! I learned so much about the fringes that the Nazi party also discriminated against while getting a glimpse into the horror the Jewish people faced. While there is sadness and pain here you can also find hope, and determination and heroes. Everyone should experience this place at least once. You will be forever changed.

They do an amazing job presenting some really tough material. It is a lot of information so we spent 3.5 hours there and there are not many places to sit, especially early in the exhibits. The exhibits are presented in a linear fashion so everyone goes through in the same order... Early exhibits can be packed, as people start moving through the displays faster (due to physical or emotional fatigue) it's easier to view them. The most horrifying images are shielded from view so you can choose to look or not. There is an exhibit geared for children out in the free area which presents the concepts well and still a wide range of ages, worth a visit if you can't get times entry passes.
