The new Masquerade is awesome and the staff are very professional.
Underground currently closed! Area very sketchy and unsafe!!
Underground is completely dead there aren't any shops the feel and true tourist traffic are in the center of Atlanta is just a sleeping ground for the homeless and forgotten.
Besides the Masquerade, everything else seemed abandoned.
This place is a long walk to get to. And there is nothing there. No shopping. Hardly nothing. The one food place that I seen was Subway, and another place that's not good at all. Like Chinese food. The food was very cold. And not taste at all. It's old, musty, and dark underground. I would never go back there.
It has gone way downhill the shops are lame an the vendors attack you as soon as you walk in
Hi,I'm born and raised in Atlanta, used to visit underground every other day,my last visit was about a month ago, goons everywhere on every corner, yep underground has lost its taste,no its not a place to take kids nor visitors I truly hope who ever owns this place get it right because it's so not my cup of tea anymore
This mall has taken a major decline in over the last 10 years. There maybe was a total of 10 stores still open. Many homeless people camped out all day. Just very disappointing. However the mall will be closed August 1st, for 2 years to be completely renovated! Hopefully some good comes from that.
Visited last year during my first trip to Atlanta. Did not notice "gang members" hanging around but the place overall looked a bit outdated, the shops were there but not with much class.
This is a public place but you are boy allowed to use the sockets in the food court our anywhere underground, this is extremely ignorant to me because in case of an emergency and you're unable to charge your phone is just crazy, I'm from Atlanta and I think this needs to change.
I visited Underground Atlanta about 20 years ago and it used to be a fun place packed with people and entertainment. Just spent a Memorial weekend in Atlanta and I was shocked how this place has changed. Extremely dirty, most restaurants were closed and out of business, cockroaches in the bathrooms and in general ghost town... Sadly... Very disappointed.
Fun to be able to go back inside after the place been close for a year
Ummm ok so maybe this once was the place but not anymore! It is filthy and abandoned looking!
Bad no good stores and no good food to choose from it should be closed down it does not look like the pictures not a good place to go if you want to visit go somewhere else not here
Don't know why this is still saying it's open when it's not.
How is this place still open? Is like a ghost town, with shuttered stores and no foot traffic. There's virtually nothing here anymore. Bring on the casino!
This is completely closed down now, parking garage attendant says it won't be open again until 2020. Writing this to save someone else the trip! We were sent to Atlantic station instead& it was very nice!
Stayed at the Marriott here and they had jo air. Promised me a free room that I still havent been refunded for
I can't stand Underground Atlanta. There's simply nothing of any interest or value located here at least in my opinion that is. This used to be an amazing area, especially for learning about our city's history. Unfortunately, this is no longer the case here. There's still the potential to learn the history of our city here, but in my opinion, there's much better sources for this rather than Underground Atlanta.
The underground gets a bad wrap and to be fair it s a bad area but don t hesitate to walk around with your friends, there are stores everywhere and you can see a part of the Coca-Cola museum from the area.
Really neat place. I wish it were a little cleaner.
They really just use the space for different things now there's no longer shopping or Eatery stores
What the heck have they done. This place is a ghost town. I come back after 5 years and it's all ran down. I'm so disappointed. I hope they empower this place. I gave 3 stars because well. I'm not from there but FOREVER I LOVE ATLANTA.
Stay away...its closed and their are nuts and homeless people all over
It was terrible. At least 85 degrees inside and almost nothing was open. It looks like everything was closed years ago.
A sad, sad place. I lived in ATL for a couple of years in the 80's, remembered checking out the underground when it was a vacant, derelict site. Unfortunately it looks like it's headed down and will soon be an empty shell once again.
The good ole days are in the past.. needs updating badly!! A huge disappointment!
Nice spot at Masquerade....even years later. The rest of Underground is deserted and lifeless. So sad
We had a great time at Heaven at The Masquerade! There seemed to be enough room for everyone to see the band and dance.
This place is a shadow of what it used to be. I hope it can recover. No energy or vibe
Not what I remember as a child or even as a college student. This place is dead
Beautiful place, but lifeless. Lack of people and vibration ... A desert of concrete ...
Atmosphere was great everyone was nice no drama Tpain concert was so amazing
I like the fact that I'm always actually underwear and not a lot of stores to choose from however
i like the girls clothing stores but it very cool and dark
The underground was chain locked at the entrances, so I guess it's closed.
My wife and I visited a few years ago ....loved the vibe ...the food and FELL IN LOVE WITH ATLANTA!!!! I would move there tommorrow if had a chance. LOL
The place is pretty much closed down and is full of transients. Def becareful going here.
When I first went there I went with friends they came here and we had visit a couple places that day we rode all day and we really did enjoy the visit there and I'm looking to go back as soon as I can but I really enjoyed it my family that day came and spent and had a very good time we Ball out that day I really like it for real
The mall is closed. Google needs to update it's schedule
My first time, der, I had a nice time, it's a Sunday so alot of stuff not open, reasonable price,
None of the stores were something I would enter. Most of the storefronts were empty. Sad to see this place so abandoned.
This whole area seems like a forgotten, abandoned project from the 90s. I was here on a Friday night and almost everything was closed by 8pm or out of business. I'm sure Atlanta has better to offer than this?
Went there about 9 years ago. When I was 11, and I enjoyed it then. I would like to visit again someday
There is pretty much nothing left. It needs a serious revamp.
This place is closed. Went there last year. They said it'll be open this year. It's still closed, they told me they'll open next year. Doesn't look like it.
Website didn't let you know its closed for renovations. Drove 7 hours on a road trip
Seriously falling apart! The stores are meaningless, the culture of the area is lost on vendors trying to squeeze out a quick buck.
Underground Atlanta: A Historic Transformation
Underground Atlanta is a historic landmark located in the heart of downtown Atlanta, Georgia. The four-block radius was once a bustling hub for retail and entertainment, but over time it fell into disrepair. However, with the help of visionary developers and community leaders, Underground is undergoing a transformation that will revitalize the area and create a sustainable community where people can live, work, create, and explore.
The History of Underground Atlanta
Underground Atlanta has a rich history that dates back to the 1800s. Originally known as Terminus, it was founded as the end of the Western & Atlantic Railroad line. As more railroads were built in the area, Terminus grew into a thriving transportation hub.
In 1864 during the Civil War Battle of Atlanta, much of Terminus was destroyed by Union troops. After the war ended and reconstruction began in earnest in 1865-66 many businesses moved to other parts of town leaving behind empty buildings which became storage spaces for goods such as cotton bales.
In 1969 businessman R.H. Macy purchased several blocks around Alabama Street with plans to build an underground shopping mall similar to one he had seen in Montreal Canada called Place Ville Marie . The project took years longer than expected due to financial difficulties but finally opened its doors on April 8th ,1969 with great fanfare.
For many years after its opening Underground thrived as an entertainment destination featuring restaurants like Dante's Down The Hatch (a fondue restaurant), bars like Churchill Grounds (a jazz club), shops selling everything from clothing to souvenirs ,and even an indoor amusement park called Fun Junction .
However by late 1990s Underground had fallen on hard times due to competition from suburban malls and changing consumer habits . Many businesses closed their doors or moved elsewhere leaving behind empty storefronts which attracted vagrants and crime .
The Transformation Begins
