My mom, who visited about 20 years ago, said it was awesome and we had to check it out. Well times have changed for UA. Avoid unless you are into hypodermic needles, crack pipes, and panhandling. Sad because architecture is actually quite neat. Hopefully, it becomes revitalized soon.

The Underground is currently being renovated and therefore there's nothing to see or do at the location. Unfortunately, there were a lot of out of towners who did not know this. Atlanta needs to get the word out via Chamber of Commerce, that it's out of commission until renovation is complete.

It's kinda neat to think that your walking below the city. If you're in the area, I recommend checking it out, but I wouldn't go out of my way. It just has small stores like a mini mall down there. We got some pralines from the candy store and they were delicious. Otherwise, the other stores aren't really worth it.

The Mascarade Venue is pretty good but everything else appeared run down or closed except for a hand full of places. The Subway was open but had no working bathroom which is disgusting. I will go back for concerts at the venue but if you are looking for anything else to do here forget about it.

It looks horrible now. Stores were closed, a lot of people was walking up to us trying to sell us drugs, etc. I remember going there on church trips as a child & it was fun. Not anymore. Be cautious going in the area. A fight even broke out in front of the store we was in. I won't be going back.

The escalators never work. And when you go into the underground it is hot super hot, and it is a very uncomfortable experience to walk through or try to visit stores or eat in the food court because you are sweating so bad.

What a cool place to be. I don't even like malls but I enjoyed that there were so many other things to do here than shop!! The surroundings were beautiful to look at. We had so much fun I forgot to snap pictures!! We can't wait to visit again when they are done remodeling.

I only like the vintage feel of the place minus the dilapidated entrance (i.e. fountains that don't work in disarray) and the countless panhandlers outside. Can't wait to see how it looks once it is purchased by a developer and overhauled!

This place use to be so very nice.... Several shootings, robberies and gang activity has turned this old Family oriented attraction into a Thug Haven. I dreamed of visiting this place when I was a little girl and now I'm afraid to take my sons there.... It needs a major facelift and much better Security! I Miss the old Underground Atlanta!!!

It is closed and desolate. Besides that the surroundings look very dangerous, better to avoid going in the afternoon. The parking lot is close to more places but better to look for another option. The worst I've seen so far

About Underground Atlanta

Underground Atlanta: A Historic Transformation

Underground Atlanta is a historic landmark located in the heart of downtown Atlanta, Georgia. The four-block radius was once a bustling hub for retail and entertainment, but over time it fell into disrepair. However, with the help of visionary developers and community leaders, Underground is undergoing a transformation that will revitalize the area and create a sustainable community where people can live, work, create, and explore.

The History of Underground Atlanta

Underground Atlanta has a rich history that dates back to the 1800s. Originally known as Terminus, it was founded as the end of the Western & Atlantic Railroad line. As more railroads were built in the area, Terminus grew into a thriving transportation hub.

In 1864 during the Civil War Battle of Atlanta, much of Terminus was destroyed by Union troops. After the war ended and reconstruction began in earnest in 1865-66 many businesses moved to other parts of town leaving behind empty buildings which became storage spaces for goods such as cotton bales.

In 1969 businessman R.H. Macy purchased several blocks around Alabama Street with plans to build an underground shopping mall similar to one he had seen in Montreal Canada called Place Ville Marie . The project took years longer than expected due to financial difficulties but finally opened its doors on April 8th ,1969 with great fanfare.

For many years after its opening Underground thrived as an entertainment destination featuring restaurants like Dante's Down The Hatch (a fondue restaurant), bars like Churchill Grounds (a jazz club), shops selling everything from clothing to souvenirs ,and even an indoor amusement park called Fun Junction .

However by late 1990s Underground had fallen on hard times due to competition from suburban malls and changing consumer habits . Many businesses closed their doors or moved elsewhere leaving behind empty storefronts which attracted vagrants and crime .

The Transformation Begins

In recent years there has been renewed interest in revitalizing Underground Atlanta thanks largely due efforts by WRS Inc., who purchased most of property surrounding Five Points MARTA station including former Macy's building at Peachtree Street NE & Alabama St SW intersection which they plan convert into mixed-use development featuring apartments/condos offices retail space restaurants etc..

WRS Inc.'s vision for Underground includes creating new public spaces that will be open year-round such as parks plazas fountains etc.. They also plan on adding new residential units so people can live within walking distance from work shopping dining entertainment venues all while being connected via transit options like MARTA trains buses streetcars bike lanes pedestrian walkways etc..

One key aspect WRS Inc.'s redevelopment plan is sustainability . They are committed reducing carbon footprint through use renewable energy sources green roofs rainwater harvesting systems recycling programs etc.. This commitment not only benefits environment but also helps attract younger generations who value eco-friendly living options when choosing where they want call home .

Another important part WRS Inc.'s vision for Underground is preserving history while embracing future . They are working closely with local historians architects designers artists community leaders ensure that any changes made respect integrity character site while still making it relevant modern-day needs desires .

Conclusion
