I am a new patient at UAB Family Practice And from registration to staff in family practice to lab staff, to the Help Desk; EVERYONE has been more than helpful and kind! I appreciate this so much!

I was scheduled for ultrasound 10:00 and had to sit and wait for a whole hour and a half just to be seen smh I don't think that I would be going back there again
My first appointment to ever visit this place took 1:45 to even see the Dr. Then once I saw him he told me I would be referred to 2 different places - oral surgeon for a small cyst and TOC for my knee. It's been a week and I haven't heard from either so I called. I was told the "referral clerk" was running behind and hasn't submitted them. When I told them this was unacceptable I was told they literally have hundreds of referrals and only one clerk to process them. This is unacceptable and it does not take this long. That's a business being run poorly. There were a ton of staff at this place but they all act cold, lifeless, and unpaid or something. The PA and the Dr. were great but the rest of the staff and business office needs to see how the rest of the world has to run an efficient and inviting business.
The Surgeons and their teams are great. A couple of the techs were good too. We had one good nurse. Their are alot of nurses here that are cold. Only recommended for patients that need special surgery.
Hold times on the phone are excessive and unacceptable. They are away from the phones more than they are on them. If you call right when they open up in the morning or come back from lunch, expect to wait for an hour and a half or more...Theres no way it should be that long of a wait the first few seconds of calling. Then they offer to call back if you can t hold without telling you how long your hold time actually will be so you can t know when to be available to talk. For people with jobs, you re not always going to be able to jump on the phone when THEY are ready to call you back. They need a better phone system and more workers answering the phones. And the wait times for appointments when you re actually there is ridiculous as well. I wouldn t recommend this place to anyone honestly unless you have all the free time in the world and can be on their time frame.
HORRIBLE PLACE!!!! Receptionists are VERY RUDE for no reason at all with disgusting attitudes! Was 5 minutes late...life happens. Anyway, when I finally got to the window they were giggling and joking on a woman who had just left who believed she had pink eye. The nasty receptionist with the horrible bangs then proceeds to ask me to tell her why I am late with attitude and falsely accused me of being 10 minutes late which I was not. I do hate being late and I am usually always on time, but the way that receptionist was treating me is despicable!! My children have been patients there since 2014 and I have NEVER encountered a nasty receptionist until today!! I always loved their clinic and some of the doctors were great with my kids. However, I will not be returning if I have to deal with horrible receptionists who clearly need to learn how to talk to and treat people. Taking my kids elsewhere.
I saw Dr Gates and she did not know what she was doing! I had a foot infection and later saw one of the senior Drs (Dr Johnson), and he said she had chosen the wrong antibiotic! But it was ok cause she's still learning! I've had this foot for 68 years and intend on keeping it so no that's not ok. Never setting foot in here again.
MY DOCTOR IS AMAZING but these receptionists are absolutely terrible. If it wasn t for my doctor I would not continue to go here. I feel like they don t know what they re doing, which is very frustrating for a patient.
Don't be surprised if you have to wait well over an hour - even if there is no one else in the waiting room. My family member who uses them say they never listen to you.
Dr. Salazar and ALL staff in Pediatrics are just AMAZING! My daughter has special needs and would have never received the care she needed if we hadn't switched to UAB. Dr. Salazar is the most thorough and dedicated doctor I've ever met. She has called me from the clinic at 8:00 pm about my sons "normal" test results and to discuss further testing. She knows both of my kids by name and genuinely cares! They have ALWAYS worked us in the same day when needed and the wait is rarely over an hour. By far the best doctor my family has ever had! We highly recommend!
Why must my appointments take so long! I can hear the docs from my room laughing it up but my appointment was supposed to start 30 mins ago!!! They want you to be here 20 mins early, for what? I don't get seen til an hour later anyway! This is ridiculous. & if I wasn't so far in my pregnancy, I'd find another doctor. & don't get me started on the staff how rude can one's staff be? If you need a obgyn in Huntsville, I recommend Dr. Edith Aguayo. She is awesome & values patients time. She listens & you really feel at peace when you leave. Unlike Uab (specifically family medicine) who you know your going to leave with something not being resolved. Stay away if you can! It's seriously not worth the headache.
Horrible experience with the billing dept. It was our first visit in several years. My son was only seen for a blue card. We preregistered and provided our insurance which was Tricare. A couple weeks later I receive a bill. I called to see if our insurance was applied. After several attempts I finally get someone who tells me they mistakenly tried to bill AARP. Don't know how since I am not a senior. The billing rep told me she would call back, never heard from her. I received another bill, I called and left a message asking for a call back due to the previous error not being corrected. Never heard from her. Now they have sent me to collections. I am going to pay this bill and never use them again. Wish I could give them a negative star
Dr. Nancy Sharma in the family medicine area is wonderful! However, HOLY SMOKES is that checkout receptionist an absolute jerk. Her name is "Jen". Jen is an ogre of a woman. Trust me, I have many strong words to describe this woman. She was nasty, rude, and condescending. I have never been treated with such a mean attitude by a receptionist! She was rude to the two women in front of me, and she was rude to me as well. I finally reached a point where I told her that she shouldn't be a receptionist if this is how she treats people, and I got, "whatever" as a response. I was happy leaving the room with the doctor, and then upset and angry when leaving the office after interacting with this ogre. In fact, at one point a different, very irate, woman and her son came back into the lobby asking for the checkout receptionists name! Well, I asked for her name too, and I will be lodging complaints in multiple places. It was ten minutes of misery having to stand in front of this beast of a receptionist. If Dr. Nancy wasn't so great I would NOT set foot in this place again. I WILL NOT check out with that woman. I will go around to the front to see the other receptionists.
This is the worst place. Do not go there. Staff members have terrible attitudes. Nurses never respond. You're lucky if you ever get someone on the phone. UAB should be ashamed. This is not how they do business in Birmingham. They told me they do not give referrals for Corona Virus. I had to get tested after hours, Insurance told me to go ahead and go to another facility since they were closed, but to call UAB Family Medicine for a referral within 72 hours. UAB Family Medicine said "No". Then gave me some lip "You haven't been seen here in over a year". Well, I haven't been sick. I had dental work done with UAB students in Birmingham. Great service. Not so here. I wouldn't send my dog there.
UAB staff is terrible and unorganized. I m never happy every time I visit I will be looking for a new physician ASAP. They never answer the phone or returns calls. They gave me the wrong doctor visit summary and never called in my prescription. I wouldn t recommend nobody to come to this office
This office is the most unreliable clinic I ve ever been to. My doctor was inexperienced and unprofessional. He actually used profanity during my exam.! I explained paper work that was time sensitive and he agreed to complete but didn t as agreed. Then a week later filled it out incompletely! The office should be closed and the entire infantry Tite redesigned. My experience over the last two years here has been embarrassing and had almost cost me my job twice due to the lack professionalism on behalf of my doctor st UAB. Don t go there!
Had a timid why doctor who could not answer any if.my medical questions, her over site doctor was also a certified loser. Came here for a second opinion and was SO TAKEN BACK BY THE Lack of skill, knowledge and professionalism. Skip this place and go see a normal care provider.
I waited on hold for over 30 minutes when I called to schedule an appointment. I chose the callback option and a hour goes by and never heard back from them. I called back and was on hold over a hour and no one ever answered my call. I have never had this issue with them and not to sure what was going on. I was completely out of my meditation and I couldn t get ahold of anyone on the phone or the portal. Terrible service.
This is the most unorganized place I ve ever been to. I give them chances after chances and it s always something. My Son s health is not to be played with. Every time I come here it s a problem and no one takes responsibility for not making correct appointments or even telling me incorrect information about my child. This is unacceptable and I know I am wasting my time because no one will ever fix this place. Word of advice do NOT GO HERE!
You never see the same physician twice and they dont listen to you. I wouldnt let my dog go to UAB internal medicine. I would rate a 0 but it's not an option.
My ultrasound was scheduled at 8 and I had to wait 2 1/2 hours while every other girl got theirs done when they were schedule around 9-9:30. Other than that Dr. Gate and dr. Olsen are awesome!
Not only did they make me wait 2 hours to meet Dr French for my first visit they then took over a week to submit my referrals to the surgery centers they said I d be referred. When I messaged Dr Hunter French about it this was his response. His mediocre response plays into the lack of leadership at this location. I ve never seen a medical facility so poorly ran and with rogue players as medical staff
I just moved here from Wisconsin and I had my records sent here before I arrived and also had made an appointment unaware that these were just interns that I was seeing. They never reviewed my records and I was refused my pain medication that iI'v been on for the last seven years. The intern then tell me that he was not authorized to provide the prescription for pain medicine and that I needed to go to a pain specialist. I have several health worries and these interns or this clinic are not equipped to deal with. Their receptionist staff is terrible their attitudes stink and they at least one in particular that I've encountered the two times I've been there young black woman with a terrible wig or weave job is very unprofessional and very impolite she acted if I was bothering her by checking in or out. They really need to choose someone different who enjoys working with the public. I am now looking for a new doctor and health care facility that care about their patients well being I've been in so much pain without my pain meds it feels as if my bones are going to break. How can you just stop taking an opioid without treatment I've been miserable ever since.
THIS IS THE MOST UNPROFESSIONALIZIED AND UNORGANIZED BUSINESS I HAVE EVER SEEN IN MY LIFE. YOU HAVE THE STAFF WEARING JORDANS AND BLUE JEANS LOOKING ROUGH ANS ANY KIND OF WAY, AND THIRTY MINUTES INTO MY APPOINTMENT THEY CANCEL SAYING THAT THE PHYSICIANS NOTED IS NOT THERES AFTER THIS ORGANIZATION UAB SETUP THIS APPOINTMENT FOR ME! Very INSENSITIVE PLACE OF BUSINESS WHEN EMPLOYEES ARE NOT EVEN ABLE TO MAKE APPOINTMENTS ACCURATELY! I AM APPAUD AT THIS NOSENSE! I WILL STEP FOOT BACK INTO THIS ORGANIZATION AGAIN AND IF ANYONE IS READING THIS PLEASE TAKE HEED!!
*If possible, I would have given this place a negative 10 star*
Under no circumstance should you ever think about stepping foot to this facility, especially to their family medicine department. I was there getting a regular physical when the doctor decided to give me unnecessary tests that I did NOT consent to. When I received the bill for the tests, I called the doctor s office and was informed that the tests were never supposed to be sent to the lab. Therefore, I did not need to worry about the bill. End of story, right? Wrong. The following month I received the bill again. Once again, I called the doctor s office. The office manager assured me that this issue would be taken care of. This was July. Since July, I have called the office maybe twice a month trying to resolve the issue. I even called Labcorp and informed them of the issue. Labcorp has tried every month to get in touch with someone in the office, but no one has ever returned their calls. Today, I receive the bill in my mail once again. It is now December, and obviously my bill has not been resolved. I call Labcorp to see if the doctor s office ever contacted them back. They did not shocker. Labcorp tries once again to reach the doctor s office, so we can fix this problem. We learn that the office manager that was supposed to help me with this issue no longer works at this office. So, once again my issue was ignored. Am I to wait this bill out and risk being turned over to a collection agency? With the way this facility is ran, my odds do not look good. So here I am, a college student with no health insurance stuck with a $230 bill that was never supposed to be charged to me. Since July, I have been assured by the nurses and office manager that I didn t need to worry about this bill, and that they would take care of it. Repeatedly, I have been lied to and tossed around. If you re reading this, I assume you care about your health and well-being. If I am correct, do not come to this place. If you do, you will probably end up with poorer health and a bill you were never supposed to receive, as I have.
stay away from uab in huntsville at all cost.i had an apptointment with my primary doctor 9 days ago.i was having and still have back and neck pain.once the nurse put me in a room,a guy came in and he turned out to be a resident doctor.after talking to him for about 45 minutes and never seeing my primary doctor,he gave me 2 scripts and nether was for pain.after 5 days and no relief,i called and ask if they would call in another type of medication and or refer me to another doctor, they refused to do either.i will never go back to uab .i have an appt on monday with a new doctor.i'll be glad to put this nightmare behind me.
I've read the reviews but have had a great experience with the doctors I selected: Cheerla and Molhatra/ other staff. The only setback is long term care with the same doctor is not a guarantee. I was disappointed with other care facilities since moving back to Alabama from Washington state; thankfully, UAB has made up for the disappointments.
I never write reviews, but felt compelled enough to write this one. Dr. Cheerla is wonderful, but the office staff is incompetent. That makes for a terrible experience so I will be finding another physician. I am placed on hold every single time I call. After being on hold for 15+ minutes, I tried the call-back feature. Well, they tried calling for a few seconds and left a voicemail. I was at work so I couldn t answer right away. I m not going to play phone tag all day long to reschedule an appointment. When I arrive for appointments, I have to wait in line for several minutes. I was late for my appointment once because I was standing in line for nearly 20 minutes. When I reached the window, the receptionist nearly forced me to reschedule my appointment. The office staff is unprofessional and apathetic at best. I finished my appointment a few minutes before closing once and the whole staff was gone - lights out. They obviously left well before closing time and I couldn t schedule my follow-up. Finally, they miss-posted my payment and I had to work to get that corrected. That was the last straw.
Abston is a horrible doctor. She was over 45 minutes late for our appointment. She manipulated my wife into having unnecessary test run on my son. He showed no symptoms of what she claimed he may have had. She also told us we feed our son too health at a previous appointment. Thankfully she is leaving this practice but not soon enough. If the next doctor we are assigned to is better than I ll chamge my review, but until stay away from Abston.
Horrible communication. Walked in Monday, met with resident who struggled with English, labs done, walked out with no direction on when/if results will be communicated. It's Thursday. Do I need to call and make another appointment and pay again? Ridiculous. Also, you must know what lab your insurance covers. Labcorp is UAB's inhouse lab. You will be sent across the hall for bloodwork and you will NOT be told upfront that this lab is Labcorp. Disgusting.
Internal Medicine advocates we use their new electronic communication system but they don't monitor it. You have to call in anyway when you need an Rx refill or have a question.
The doctor's in training have given me mis-information that had to be corrected by the lead physician.
Lead physicians are very knowledgeable, kind and compassionate. They involve the specialists as needed (Rx, etc.) Some of the Resident doctors need to be monitored more closely. My present physician is an exception - he is brilliant and takes adequate time to visit and explain things. If he is unsure about an answer, he will consult with the Staff Physician on duty before he replies.
Poor communication to the public on their hours - they don't change their voice messages to reflect their hours around the holidays.
The main desk at UAB has some awful coverage - the persons covering the phones are often rude, abrupt and give out wrong information as well.
I think that Administration should take a hard look at the staffing utilized to answer the public.
They are taking service lessons from the VA. Called for a refill of a prescription from my pharmacy. After not hearing any feedback in a week I called UAB to find out what the holdup was. I was told they ignore all pharmacy requests. They made no attempt to inform me or the pharmacy of that policy. I requested a refill directly and was told that a nurse would get back to me if there were any issues. It was 3 days before I got a call back and was told that I would need to make an appointment with a doctor to do a follow up to see if the medication was doing what it was suppose to do. By this time I have not been taking the medication for almost 2 weeks. Any blood test results will be suspect. A little bit of communication and common sense would have gone a long way.
UAB is a school of doctors who are on their way into the free world to treat patients of their aliments. The thing is: you never see the doctor you're under because you're always seen by the student Dr's that in my opinion hardly have a real clue. I wasn't told that I had become a diabetic for an entire year after they had done the initial test "I'm so sorry we dropped the ball Ms. Johnson" was what was said to me. The entire truth of the matter is this: if you're disabled and you receive medicaid there aren't any good Doctors that accept medicaid in Alabama so you're stuck between a rock and a mountain. If you're new to alabama like myself you must ask around to find great service or your experience won't be a good one. There's so much wrong with this system that I don't have the time to write a detailed review, just know this: ASK AROUND (research it!!) for quality health care. Dr. Andrews of Happi is a good doctor in HSV, I hope that you find what you need.
My letter to Dr. Gavira Dr. Claudia Gaviria I wish i had just gone back to the ER. Or even told the nurse NO and walked out. I'm leaving this message in response to the way things were handled on Friday. This appointment which should, at most, of taken 40 minutes turned into 2 hours of hell for me and my kids. You disregarding the fact that my children have special needs and have trouble with transition is what im referring to. Having me take all of them downstairs to the pharmacy to fill a prescription which took over 40 minutes was NOT OK in anyway. Sending me down there did NOT HELP me in anyway. Your total disregard for my children and thier needs is unexcusable. I literally had to sit on the floor with my daughter in my lap crying, in pain, ear infection and fever. While also trying to hold my son's hands down, so he can't hit himself, holding his head up, so he can't slam it on the ground, also screaming and crying. I have three special needs children. You should of offered me some kind of assistance in taking care of my kids or filling the prescription. Yes the whole thing was exhausting for me, but who you are really HURTING are my kids. The fact that you even assume that it was okay to treat us in that manner is appalling. You need to learn about the families that you are treating. Because obviously not all of them are the same. You also need to learn how to speak to parents the manner in which you do is demeaning. You completely undermine a parents experience, knowledge and capabilities they have with their children. Bottom line is that my kids and i should of never been treated in The Way We Were. I will never gain use you as aI will never gain use you as a doctor I will never again use you as a doctor and and i will never send someone in for your assistance. Im not asking for special treatment, just consideration, compassion and assistance.
Receptionists that answer the phone are very short with you. It s very expensive just for a standard refill appointment. I was billed $190 after insurance (approximately $260 before insurance). My insurance isn t great but after making some calls I found the average visit is about $100 before insurance. Why they charge so much I have no idea
I hate this damn place. If I cloud find another doctor near by I would never go back. I really do hate the doctors. Every time u go back it's somebody different and even stupider than the last
Stay away from this uab building if you can and try to get another medical doctor. I have been taking my sick family member here for quite some time now abd they have become real bitchy and ignorant and I told them if necessary I will find another doctor in huntsville for him. They dismiss patients who are very sick threaten them and I will report them to the Alabama board of health if they make him sick further. They dont give a dam about any patient and have become very callous and cruel in treatment of family members and patients. I am shocked this is happening here when the hospital staff at huntsville is so caring and nice at huntsville hospital. These people at uab should not be treating anyone and act like devils. I will find another doctor for my family if I have to but one from the hospital not from this nasty clinic. Stay away at all costs. They talk to people like they are garbage and will be reported to the governing board of health for alabama.
These "doctors" will perform tests that you didn't authorize. The lab samples get sent out to LabCorp and cost a fortune--which of course they don't tell you. When you ask about your lab work, you get the run around since the doctors come and go. They chalk it up to "well that's what the doctor ordered and if they thought it was necessary..." I only come in here for my yearly check up with no health issues so I can't imagine coming here for an actual issue.
The lady at check in Shamica at family medicine center was very rude was yelling at me because I was trying to fill our a check in form for me and my daughter and there was someone trying to schedule an appointment... So they didn't need the sign n form.. she told me I couldn't cut but how was I cutting when the man didn't need the sign in sheet n I grabbed the sign in pad and moved to the side!! I wasn't in nobody's way nor was I bothering anyone!! She yelled at me like I was her child or animal!!! Mad me cry really upset me!!! I've been coming here since I was 18 & I'm 33 now!! NEVER HAVE I EVER BEEN TREATED LIKE THAT AND NOT SURE IF ILL B BACK!!! She had no rite to talk to me like that or treat that was I feel it was a racist thing because I'm white n the next person she waited on was African American and she was sweet as gold to her!!!
Today was my first appointment with Internal Medicine. Everything was excellent, from the receptionist, to the nurse, and the physians. Very professional and caring. Great experience.
I went to UAB, I ended up seeing a resident Alex McQueen. I came in with pain in the majority of my joints, cognitive issues, hair loss and fatigue. I suspected that I had Lyme. He dismissed my confusion, headaches, neck stiffness, and hair loss. He told me Lyme was rare in Alabama and told the nurse he was not concerned about it at all. He ran basic tests and told me to come back in 1-2 months to check for RA and recheck my cholesterol. I went to a different doctor and was diagnosed with Lyme.
The most incompetent billing office I have ever delt with. Getting treated here has cost me countess hours on the phone with Blue Cross Blue Shield in an effort to fix their mistakes, as well as well over a $1000 dollars in unecessary medical expenses for routine tests that ARE CLEARLY covered by my insurance, but that I have had to bite the bullet for because they just can't seem to file it under the correct code. They will incorrectly re-file claims over and over again. They will give you unessary tests not covered by your insurance. Dealing with this office has been an absolute nightmare and I'm just hoping I can find a new doctor before needing another visit.
I was apprehensive of scheduling my appointment because of the reviews posted, but I am absolutely satisfied by the care and professionalism of all the staff. From the moment I walked in the door for the first appointment, the follow-ups, and blood work, nothing but kindness and competency. Excellent communication with my doctor who walked me through everything and answered every question I had, cannot say enough positive things about UAB Health Center.
