Nice beach with no development. No houses, condos or hotels . The lighthouse is free to enter and you can take the stairs to the top to get a view of the island. The visitor center has a lot of neat displays and the nature center has an aquarium for the kids to learn about and handle horseshoe crabs and other species that live in the ocean.

My mom, sister, and I have been coming to Chincoteague for years. Always a wonderful, quaint place to visit as long as you're prepared to battle the hordes of mosquitos that descend on the island after a rain. They're not for the faint of heart.

Absolutely the WORST person I ve ever encountered at an entrance booth. The lady at the booth had the worst attitude towards people because THEIR machine wouldn t accept MasterCard and she thought it was outrageous that people don t carry cash. I really wish I got her name to turn her in to a supervisor. She has no business working in a place like that with that poor of an attitude! If I didn t have my kids in the car she would ve got the same attitude right back that she was giving me!

Wild nature is so attractive. I have spent around 4 hours at this refugee. Ocean is not clear. Huge Beach with restrooms, parking lots, and room for changing clothes. Also you can see here (not like every where) trash containers. Ok, what else: people are swimming not only in the ocean, but on the back side of it - lake or something like that. I have visited Light house. Another parking so clear for understanding map and nice walking. If you fan of bike - put yourself on dozen bike miles at this area.

The refuge trek was very educational. Lots of wildlife and the guide was very knowledgable of the area and the wildlife. Bus was air conditioned which made an other wise misserable trip on a hot muggy day. Wife enjoyed seeing the horses in the natural habitat and I must say it was a peaceful setting and area.

Love the ponies. Hate that although the Chincoteague Fire Dept is working on their 3rd firehouse, they can't build a shade structure for the corralled ponies suffering in the direct sun.

Beautiful place to see shore birds and of course the horses in addition to the normal shore attractions of the ocean, light house and walking trails. Went on a sunny day in Feb so no bugs and fewer people.

I would recommend you come and visit in the fall/winter cuz once the weather gets nice the mosquitoes come out to play. They are vicious and they can actually bite you through your clothing. This place is so pretty and has alot of trails you can do. Kid/family friendly.

So great! Drove through on a dampish January during the government shut down. Place was pretty empty but we did walk the beach. Saw many horses on the Assateague side, not this side, thought you can see some captured ones in a coral next to the McDonald's as you enter/exit. For some quarters you can feed them. Beach was very clean, as we're the portapottys, which we were very relieved about. We didn't know if the shut down would affect it. Short walk through the woods on a large but natural path to see the lighthouse. Walk is only about 5 minutes, if that. They have a handicap parking lot tho right at the lighthouse for people who can't so the trail. We we're the only ones there and visited for about 20-30 min taking photos. The visitors center was closed but we did use the picnic tables for lunch.

Natural beach well worth visiting. Mosquitos are vicious. Exciting to see the wild ponies, albeit, in the distance along shoreline. Suggest a boat tour to get close to the ponies. Highly recommend Salt Water Pony tours.

An amazingly beautiful place! One of the best experiences of my life! I saw two bald eagles hungrily devour a freshly caught fish. Numerous other species of birds, and of course the Chincoteague Ponies! The ocean and beach were pristine! I collected beautiful shells!

I was really disappointed that a wildlife refuge was over run with tourists who had no regard for the wildlife. People were speeding thru the park in cars and motorbikes. There's only 1 good place to actually see the horses and it's far off the main path so my dad, who has issues walking, was not able to get any closer than a glance from the main road. Maybe going in the off season is better but not sure I'll bother.
