. . . I first became a student at Tyler Junior College in 2002 so, I think I'm MORE than qualified to submit/write this review. Every course taken here I consider to be quality, just as every course taken here has transferred to other four year universities I've attended. Financial Aid (for me) was fairly easy to attain as long as you submitted your FAFSA correctly and in a timely manner. (I had both loans and grants while attending Tyler Junior College.)
Even after leaving TJC, I would return to use their open Pirtle Tech computer lab (2010 - 2012), open seven days a week. While no college/university is absolutely perfect, I have no reservation or objection in giving Tyler Junior College five stars. Anyone fresh out of high school looking to try their hand at a local college experience before heading to a larger campus with small, affordable classes, I would definitely recommend TJC. To be a junior college, they take education very seriously.
. . . Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if I were to alumni with them one day. Go Apaches! ;-)

The worst college that I have ever visited. Last y...
The worst college that I have ever visited. Last year I was looking into continuing my education in nursing. I called the college weeks in advance and made an appointment to talk with an advisor about their nursing program. I also inquired about the parking policy because I did not attend TJC and didn't have a parking permit. The man told me to park on the street and I wouldn't get a ticket. The day of my appointment arrives and I drive the hour to the campus. I parked in the street with other cars making sure there was no sign saying I couldn't park in that spot. I made my way to the advisors office and it was empty. Finally someone told me where to find them. I spoke with a woman who said they didn't open until 12 (my appointment was for 11) and she said she couldn't find it on her computer and couldn't see me for a full appointment. Another woman found it and the first one said it must have been deleted off of her computer by accident. They were having an event that day where they spoke with hundreds of people for about 10 minutes each trying to get them into the school. They apologized and told me I would be first in line. I was first in line, but they kept pushing back the time of when they would "open" and start talking to us. When I finally spoke to someone I explained that I wanted to do a bridge program for my nursing degree and he told me he couldn't help me with that. He told me I could probably go over to the nursing building and maybe someone there could help me. An advisor couldn't advise me on one of the schools programs? That makes sense. He told me he couldn't help me beyond that sentence and I left only to find a ticket on my car. I called and spoke with the municipal court and the college explaining that I was told to park there and that there was no no parking sign anywhere. I was told the ticket would be dismissed. Over a year later my mother sends me a picture of a letter saying that I need to appear in court for the $45 parking ticket. So in conclusion, I wasted at least 3 hours that day and now have to pay a ticket that I called in advance to prevent. That time and money may not seem like much but at the time I was working full time in Longview on weekends and driving to houston during the week to take care of my father and take him to his appointments at MD Anderson. I had to beg my family to take him that day so that I could go to this appointment and it was a complete waste.

Very questionable practices. The online class portion of this school is broken beyond usability. TJC wasted a whole semester basically troubleshooting my problems with classes. Nobody seems to understand their own policies either. A week into taking courses an advisor told me I should have taken an introductory orientation, which is odd because the first person I spoke to specifically said there was not orientation I could take.
The website was down quite a bit, typically when I need to actually get work done, and while some TJC staff was genuinely kind, knowledgeable, and helpful, they couldn't resolve the issues very quickly.
TJC is also blocking some people from their Facebook page if they leave bad reviews. If that's not a red flag I don't know what is lol.

Make sure you know about your credits situation because they will enroll you just to get your money in one semester knowing that you won't be eligible for the next semester.. repetitively put you in classes just to make money for the school, and 90% of the students working at the admin widow are super rude , snobbish and on an unwarranted ego trip !

Below average school like every other one in East Texas. This one like many others heavily advertises it's athletic & sports but on actual education standards it is subpar that reaches the minimum requirements. They advertise the small classes because there aren't actually that many professors & they source their pool of educators from recent graduates & regulations don't allow them to teach more than a certain number of students at a time. The Baptist groups are given free reign to do as they please & if you prefer a secular setting I'd look elsewhere. Their technology department is a joke, take a look for yourself during the tour.

I received my Vocational Nurse Certificate from Tyler Jr College 28 years ago. I had no problems with any of the process then. I enjoyed all the staff, from Admissions, Financial Aid to my Dean of Nursing to all of my Instructors (but one, But God). Of course by now people, priorities, attitudes and the reason they work has changed. Titles don't make the person, but because they have one some, not all treat people as low level. Times have changed, people want respect but, don't give it.

Very beautiful campus, but International Student s advisor services is terrible, I have to say that they do not know what they are doing, one person tells me to do this, the other person says it is not right to do that. very nosy, asks me a bunch of my personal questions and make me feel like I m a burden to them. They actually run students away.

I gave it 3 stars cuz ima try to go to tyler again this year but I had to enlist in the military last year because they didn't process my financial aid correctly and I had to choose between the military or college at that time. Luckily I got discharged early.

Nice college. It has a university feel but it s not. The one thing I didn t like was the FEES and the late refund date! Security fee, library fee, etc. then, they want you to take out loans. I have financial aid so I had barley enough for books but I didn t receive my refund check when like the 2nd week class started. When I called, they pretty much told me, you should haven taken out a loan. No ma am. Not for a community college. Other than that, no complaints here.

New ideas from enthusiastic employees are taken as threats. The buildings look historic and pretty on the outside, but they are falling apart in disrepair on the inside. The school is submerged in a culture preaching perpetual victimhood, oppression olympics, and snow-flakery. Welcome to the micro-agression, subjectively offended atmosphere.

Very good place to start college experience! Looks & feels like a university! Beautiful campus, lots of new classrooms & student housing! Most athletic teams have won numerous Nat'l Championships esp. the Tennis team! Above avg sport facilities for training & on campus play! Enrollment in the 10K range, many students from around the world! Excellent faculty & student friendly atmosphere! Many "online classes" & good location easily accessible! Up to date w/ADA accommodations! Campus Police 24/7! Safe environment & academic coordination for easy transition to University of Texas @ Tyler! Home of the world famous TJC Apache Belles! Socially active students and on campus job opportunities! I went there then to UT Austin for a BSN - no regrets!!

I attended TJC this past fall and had to end it short sadly due to my decision. but anyways school is wonderful depends on the indivisuals expectations.
The staff and admin do their job to the best of their ability, I stayed on campus so i got the full experience. the RA's are cool and very serious about their job; got in trouble onth my terms but thats because the rules they set which could use a little revising too. The students are all friendly. TJC is like one big family literally. The complaints that were mentioned about the financial aid are true I delt with a little frustrations before school started but being that the way my mother and father are they made sure we stayed on top of what was needed to be turned in that consisted of calling everyday and on the hour of every hour and thats how you have to be with them becuase they can be a little unorganized.
The cafe isnt the best, you have to have a meal plan its required if you have a dorm but anyways the cafe wasnt what you called delightful all that money and it could atleast get better quality food but anyways the breakfast and lunch were probably the only time they would do right sometimes..so yes you could say i skipped out more than alot of meals so no freshmen 15 for me.
The enviroment is safe always security around and very friendly make sure you have your i.d. and lanyard OHMYGOD I CANNOT STRESS ENOUGH TO WEAR YOUR LANYARD the security will not stop bugging you about that and will give you a fine.
Overall my experience was nice I hope you all decide to go I promise every school is not perfect but give this one a chance very home like feel and youll make friends instantly and by the way they have starbucks, subway, and chik-fil-a!

I went here between 2008-2012, it was a great school if you want to save some money, get classes out of the way before going to a 4 year school, and want to stay close to home. I would give it a 5 star, but at the time, the advising was pitiful and could have been ran by monkeys whose primary job was accounting better than the advisers at the time.

DO NOT GO TO THIS SCHOOL! This is the worst junior "college" in the history of education! The financial aid office is run by students paid minimum wage, and the professors are abysmal! Cynthia Gaddis was by far the worst of all! She "forgot" to adjust the grades weights, CAUSING HALF HER CLASS TO FAIL ON THE FINAL DAY! TJC cant even hire competent professors, what makes you think they know remotely anything about eduction. Go literally ANYWHERE else!

Thought that maybe the reviews regarding finacial aide were a little off or perhaps they had corrected the issues since some of the reviews were over 6months ago; however I am now having the same issure regarding finacial aide. I applied for financial aide in Feb. and had the information sent directly to the school and all my information was submitted for my son mid July. School starts Aug. 27th and I actually had to take out a bridge loan which doesn't cover books and housing in order to hold classes. I don't understand why it takes so long. They keep telling me he hasn't been awarded, but any other school I have dealt with does this pretty quickly. Whatever the glitch is, this should be moved to the forefront of being corrected as I'm sure that over half the students that attend, come in on financial aide and use those funds to pay for a lot of the items needed for school. I do like the campus and how polite staff is; however this will definitly have a bearing on our attendance next semester.

Financial said is still super u organized and I graduated last May and called to get info on a form and they couldn t even properly direct me to the right person . I love this school but lately after the incident that happened changed everything, I won t take anymore classes after summer and I will tell everybody I know. I went to the business office to get a remaining balanced resolved, due to the fact I had signed up for a May Mester class so I had registered and everybody knows that if you don t pay you are automatically dropped. But not in my case, I wasn t dropped and I didn t pay for the class so I was concerned and dropped myself since I didn t pay anything because I had changed my mind to take it later in the summer. Well they had the audacity to charge me half of the class for that reason... and they never bothered to mention to me that they weren t dropping people due to payment like they usually do. So my issue remains unresolved and I asked to speak to a supervisor on the phone and they told me all I had was the business center on the second floor to talk to about that, when I already did and they say is my fault. Ridiculous, so everybody just FYI make sure you drop because they won t drop you all the time they will wait till you drop yourself to make you pay!!!!!!!!!

Hard to get professors to work with your learning disabilities even tho it s the law!!! Also they spend more time writing parking tickets then keeping the campus safe! Honestly not the best school! Also trying to call for anything is a nightmare of transfers and being hung up on!
Saying that the service of the Financial Aid depar...
Saying that the service of the Financial Aid department and other departments is poor to fair is being quite generous. The condescending attitude of the staff is below marginal. You can never ask a simple question and get a simple answer. The staff in the financial aid department act as if they are doing you a wonderful favor and give answers in a tone that is so unprofessional and a complete turn off or you get no answer at all. Also, a lot of students try to answer questions. My son goes to a Division 1 college and received his financial aid before school started in August and he applied late! My daughter was not awarded her financial aid until Halloween and its a junior college! Then they have to nerve to outsource some of the financial aid work! And then you really can't get an answer. Really, if a public school can afford to outsource the work, something is very wrong. Also, the college advisors are a bunch of pimps. They really try to sell the remedial courses to you and make you feel good about it. My daughter took the Accuplacer and did not pass, NO ONE passes at 35 bucks a pop (cash only by the way). If you don't pass the math, you have to take a four part remedial course that adds up. Oh yeah, this is a four part course that goes against your GPA but you receive no credits. That is some BS. These pimps will not get anymore of my money. Bottom line is if you cannot write a check to this twilight zone of un-professionalism and SLOWNESS, prepare yourself to deal with what is in store. Come with a drink and a bible, you will need it.

Despite having a few amazing professors and learning a lot from their classes, I still feel I need to give this college a one star rating. The finacial aid office and other services on main campus are disgraceful. I've never experienced such unprofessional people before attending this school.
