This hotel is situated at the harbour end of Waikiki and is away from the hussel and bussle of the other end Waikiki beach. The rooms are as the hotels name "Modern" with a white on white look with cider wooden shutters the bathrooms are tastefully decorated and have large shower areas. The STAFF are fantastic take time to talk to them as they are super friendly and genuinely have your best interest at heart to make your stay the very best it can be. We have returned to this hotel due to its cleanliness, layout, location & it's STAFF.
Truly fantastic service; great feel and updates; good value. Good restaurant on premise as well.
Wonderful place to stay and relax. Ocean front view was beautiful
Poor customer service! Charged us two different rate for resort tax because tax rate all of a sudden increased after one night stay from 4% to almost 15%.
I saw cockroach at this hotel.
Pool was so fancy but room was not good!
The hotel itself is nice and hip, but the service and relentless sales person at the concierge ruined the whole experience
There is a bar/night club on the first floor. It plays music until 4 AM SO LOUD that the glasses are jumping on the desk in the room on the 3d floor. At 4am I asked them to move me to a different room... so they moved me 2 floors up (5th floor), and it didn t help much.
Stuff was not very friendly/helpful with deal with it attitude. When asked to speak with manager, nobody called back.
Lovely setting poolside where you can drink and dine. Good cocktails.
The location is good, and some ocean view rooms have a good view on the terrace. The diamond head is invisible. The lagoon at Hilton Village is at a glance and the distance to Waikiki Beach is also good. Facilities and room condition are very clean and good. It is good to use addiction night club from Thursday to Sunday. The hotel does not have self-parking, so you have to use vallet for $ 35, but if you use the parking lot across the street, the guest will pay $ 20 for 24 hours, regardless of the number of arrivals / departures.
Very nice hotel, pool and Barr desk is great, lots of room to sit, easy to talk as no loud music. It's a long walk into main Waikiki shipping and touristy areas, but within easy reach of the Ala Moana mall.
This is an amazing hotel. I was so impressed with the quality and professionalism of the entire staff, including the housekeeping, front desk, and concierge team. I wanted to particularly express my appreciation to Katie Decker for her outstanding hospitality, who went above and beyond the call of duty to making all of her guests feel so welcome, and taking a group of us on a memorable tour to the Magic of Polynesia show. Thanks to staff like Katie who demonstrate an uncompromising commitment to excellent service, I will most certainly return to the Modern the next time I am back in Honolulu!
We were very much looking forward to our anniversary trip to Oahu and chose to stay at The Modern after doing a lot of research. Our first night here we got woken up to protests at 6am right outside our bedroom, these protests went on for an hour and a half. We could hear everything even with all the patio doors closed. We were unable to use the pool during this time as well as the protesters were right outside the pool. When we called reception and expressed our concern they said this was normal and should be done soon. We again mentioned it on checkout and the manager didn t seem bothered staying it was out of their control. I felt like it was poor customer service and not what we wanted to wake up to after a long day of travelling. We will not be recommending this hotel to our friends or visiting it again.
The only thing that stopped me from giving The Modern a 5-star rating is the fact that the have a nightclub on the first floor (not the ground floor) that is open on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 9pm until 3am. We were in a room on the third floor and the music was booming through from two floors below. I do not exaggerate. Our room was literally shaking. I had seen previous reviews about this issue but thought that by now, the management would have addressed this issue. However, this was not the case. I called the front desk and complained about the issue. I asked to have the manager contact me the following day and the clerk asked what time. I asked if the manager would be in at 8am. He said yes and I said that would be fine. By 8:30 the next day, I still had not heard from anyone. So I called the front desk back and the clerk said he would get someone to call me ASAP. Within 10 minutes I got a call back and everything was made right after that. They apologized profusely and got us a room ready on the 15th floor by noon after telling us it would be 4:00pm before the room was ready due to having to wait for people to check out. Big plus! Once we got our new room, the next six nights were wonderful. Nice, clean hotel and amenities. Good service too. Well worth the stay. This being said, the reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is this:
1. This should never happened in the first place. Previous guest complaints should have been heeded and immediate steps taken to correct the nightclub noise issue, i.e. soundproofing, do not schedule rooms for people on nights the nightclub is open, let people know about this issue beforehand and see if they are willing to put up with it (very doubtful).
2. It is a hassle to pack everything back up and move to a new room.
3. Manager did not respond as promised. I am sure most guests like us spend plenty of money to come here and the hotel they stay at is probably one of the most important things to guests. Respond promptly please!
Luckily, this incident did not deter us from having a great time in Hawaii but it may for others. Please get the nightclub issue fixed and I bet you will see many more positive ratings.
Rooms were nice but small, no locks on bathroom doors good view from most rooms. The hallways seemed too dark. But overall nice place
Clean and comfortable, renovated with a very modern feel. Since they knew it was our honeymoon, we got upgraded from city view to partial ocean view room. Hotel room thoughtfully accommodated with terry cloth slippers, bath robes, bottled water, keurig pods for the information keurig machine. Air conditioner blew right over the head of the bed, but the wooden shutter installed over it could be shifted up to force air into ceiling (we figured that out later). Staff all very friendly and helpful, concierge had "welcome packages" which included city map and trolley info, as well as deals to attractions provided you commit 90-120 minutes of your time to attend a Diamond Resort timeshare presentation. Parking with hotel is valet for $35 USD per night, with 24h privileges, only charged for each night you park (not for whole hotel stay). There is also a cheaper self-park option that we found out later on, across the street at the Illikai Marina, for $23 USD per 24h for guests at The Modern and select nearby hotels. Easy to park, and has a walkway directly from the parking "2nd" floor to The Modern "1st" floor. Location was great - 20min walk to main Waikiki, 10min walk to Ala Moans Center. Also easy access to the Waikiki Trolley just outside the neighbouring Illikai Hotel.
Overpriced, small portions, mediocre food, poor service
This hotel is conveniently located in walking distance to a beach in Waikiki but is away from the busy shopping district.
The swimming pool, comfortable pool side beds, friendly and helpful staff and high quality food are some of the reasons that we will be back to this hotel.
Food prices are slightly high with decent quality but this is the case in most of Hawaii.
Here are some tips:
There is complementary sunblock lotion in the pool area
Don't miss the fireworks on Fri. nights.
Book a room with pool/beach view
Shop your grocery from Food pantry 10 min. away.
Try their frozen coconut mojito and wings
Stunning rooms, great service (especially from the poolside bar staff) and a beautiful boutique atmosphere made this a real highlight in Honolulu.
Great room and view, concierge is REALLY pushing the sales more than it should. No one wants a investment property pitched to them in a conference on vacation however. Staff has been friendly over all. Didnt try the restaurant, 8 bucks for a bowl of cereal? Pass
Went to The Lobby just for a a couple drinks. Was very crowded on a Friday night.
Plenty food, easy to find the rooms, short walk from ala moana if don't wanna valet
Security was very rude just called to ask if they where open he didn't even let me finish when he said no in a very rude way. Guess I won't recommend this hotel to anyone.
Great place to stay in, would choose here again next time in the area.
The service was great! The waiter was somewhat knowledgeable and had togo to the back to get the answer. I appreciate that he did that and didn't just lie. The food was delicious and the location was really clean. There's also free valet with validation so you can't go wrong there. Definitely will be back.
Great location! That's the best part about this place. Guys at the bar cool. No microwave, Hotel 6 uncomfortable mattresses. High Resort fee
Just purchased by Diamond Resorts a timeshare company for $265 million. Small hotel rooms and suites. Will be upgraded floor by floor. Will have less rooms but larger with kitchenettes. Small pool not enough shade for number of guests. Limited menu in restaurant $$$. Main restaurant closed. We hope Diamond management will upgrade this property in the next year.
Wonderful view facing the water. Not set up yet to accommodate for 4 people in a room. Had to ask for enough towels, waited 4 hours for roll away bed. No ice machine, call front desk for it. Modern low furniture ,cant really sleep on that couch. No microwave. Are in the process of upgrading.
I think the hotel needs some love, If they did some simple changes to the rooms it could be a much nice hotel. The name modern needs to be that. The lighting I feel in this hotel is really lacking, specially in the rooms and the hallways. The lounge chairs have black mold on the them, the desk chair in the room was very not modern and it hurt to sit in, hallways need a paint, carpet wasnt very clean and felt cheap. The bed was comfortable, location was nice that it was a little step from the hectic Waikiki. Over all a decent stay just think they could make the rooms "Modern" with some simple upgrades. For us to stay here again I would want to see an upgrade.
The location was great, however this was overshadowed by how rude & unhelpful the outdoor pool staff were.
Would not recommend this place to stay if you are looking for a seamless place to relax & unwind.
Nice relaxing atmosphere. Parking garage conveniently across the road. 20 dollars per day for hotel guests with in and out privileges. Bridge connects the buildings
The food and service here is top notch. Highly recommended
The Grove reminds me of a more densely populated Kierland Commons with a bellagio-eque water feature. We walked around, we ate, we browsed, we listed to music and even rode the double decker train thing. The insane part is the parking. I think it cost us close to $50. Anyway, my favorite part of the Grove is the Farmers Market. I love all those little stands.
Upstairs pool deck is a blast! Corn hole, jenga, connect four, bar, and pool with a great view.
Amazing service and hotel. Everyone is very nice and helpful. Me and my wife were on our honeymoon and we got a room with 2 beds. The clerk at the front desk was nice enough to upgrade us to a suite for free because no our king bed rooms were available. Definitely a highlight of our trip
The hotel is very pushy about buying a membership. We paid over 300 in fees that were for newspaper, coffee and water which we didn't get any unless we called the front office. The rooms are not cleaned unless called. They don't do anything for celebrations and if you buy food from the strip you can't eat it there unless it's in your room. The front desk staff were nice but we will not be staying there again.
Perfect location at the beginning of Waikiki, super clean love the current decor, sitting on the balcony. The pools : there are two one wade poop that is for adults only and has a bar. And one that is for all, has a bar as well. The view is of the ocean and Marina, walking distance to Hilton Hawaiian village.
It's a nice, small hotel more for adults than for a family with kids.
The beds are hard as a rock and the pillows are so soft you need 4 to hold your head up. There was music playing all night! Lots of noise from people slamming doors 24/7,still a work in progress, modern?? On the inside yes, outside not so much. But on the bright side the staff is on point, from the moment you step on the property. I would give them 5 stars.
Great place to stay and get to gather with friends, family and stuff. Absolutely delicious breakfast and dinner at Morimoto's, fun and friendly, upbeat environment. Beautiful place along the Wiaikiki beach. There's a lot of exciting stuff to do during your hawaiian adventure's when you book and only when you book at The Modern Honolulu on the gorgeous Honolulu Island.
The most fantastic hotel and time I've ever spent away from home. I would rate the Moderm Honolulu higher if this scale acoomodated it!
My girlfriend and I were here from 29th May 2013 to the 10th June 2013. The staff are ALL amazing, polite, courteous, helpful, and grateful. During our stay the adult pool was set up with a movie screen and they showed The Goonies, with free popcorn, and cheap beers. We had a fantastic time daily lazing around the pools with full bar access.
Minimal children, location, styling, atmosphere, aimed at young mature adults with a finer appreciation of their surroundings and comforts the Modern Honolulu has marked itself as a hotel we would be fortunate to one day stay in again.
I cannot say enough about how wonderful our time in the Modern was. Thankyou to all the staff and we hope to one day see you all again! My only criticism was we feel terrible we cannot be back sooner especially with all the Facebook updates teasing us !!
Great service, nice rooms, valet and front desk people were all friendly and had great attitudes. Located next to the Ilikai, a short walk would get you to Ala Moana Center and Ala Moana Beach Park.
This is the worst hotel in my life
There is no refrigerator in the room
So I asked for a room with a refrigerator
Not the same day
You have to check out the next morning and check in again in the afternoon.
So the next day, I packed up and took it out
When you check in again
He said he had no room and had to go back to a room without a refrigerator...
What a ridiculous case this is
This is the first time there is no refrigerator in the hotel.
And why do you change words after saying you change them
I liked fruit, so I tried to eat fruit and drink cold beer and water...
I'm on vacation and I messed up
Also, it was uncomfortable because the bathroom was not soundproofed at all.
The water pressure is too weak
And the counter staff were unfriendly
Great outdoor pool/ restaurant area with view of ocean. This is a luxurious setting!
Super clean and modern, had an amazing experience! It was my favorite out of multiple hotels I stayed (turtle Bay resort, Waikiki Marriot)!
My wife and I love the Modern! The rooms are clean with a very upscale feel. The club's are on point as well, we will occasionally visit "The Study" when when we don't stay at The Modern to have a few drinks in a less "early twenties, I'm now legal to drink" environment.
They were very helpful. We had our anniversary. It was a nice room.
I was visiting a friend and attending a conference, otherwise I would not have been here. The staff was a bit unfriendly. Even when they were just serving, they seemed snooty and refused to offer a menu. It's just too expensive to justify this kind of service, and complete lack of amenities.
Find a beach resort and enjoy the island over the city is my only recommendation.
Wanted to have a nice surprise celebration for my wife's birthday so I flew us in from Michigan. I did a little research to find an awesome place that was suitable for us. The Modern Honolulu delivered. Awesome view, chic atmosphere, great food & drinks (try the Coconut mojito-signature drink, thanks Geoff & Jacie!!!) This in now my place to stay when visiting Waikiki, hands down!
TOTALLY NEW+PLAC
E
Loved our stay here! It s beautiful, but only giving 4 stars because we had to pay $35 a day to park our car.
Just visited this hotel was not a guest, however, I did find the decor was very pleasant and up to date.
It is located slightly off the major strip but there are restaurants and shopping very close by as well as public transportation in the area.
Favourite Hawaiian hotel in Honolulu. Amazing rooms. Litter over priced for what is offered but still really comfortable, stayed here twice. Oddly , getting someone to actually bring cutlery to the room was a chore at best. I had to visit the front desk twice and call down 3 times. 1.5 hours later my food was cold. Offered to pick it up myself. No luck. Night manager had to deliver it. Offered a "sorry that happened" , but no compensation for being put out personally. Relaxing pools, good gym, great food ! Breakfasts on the deck are amazing! Have the macadamia pancakes or the eggs Benedict ! Close walk to the beach . There were times on the weekend, we wondered if this was a relaxing hotel or party hotel when the pool was taken over by drunk patrons playing their own music and being overtly loud. Leaving cups in the pool and staff would see but wouldn't pick up. Those were definite, go to the beach days. Avoid the weekends if you can, otherwise would recommend and stay there again.
Nice hotel. Awesome interior. Perfect reclining chairs
A stylish quirky hotel, great service provided. Its just next to the beach and if you can't bother to walk you can use the private pools. The quaint lobby bar called THE STUDY definitely feels special.
Great location. Views of the ocean and city from our room were amazing!!!
Very nice hotel, slightly posh and well maintained.
I stayed here for 4 nights April 10-14. The hotel looks nice. The floors are dingy and dark. Rooms were clean. There is a club on one of the floors that you can hear all night long. The beds were very uncomfortable as were the pillows. There is no privacy when using the bathrooms. There is a sliding door but the walls have slats then so you can see in and hear everything. We had to leave the room anytime we need to use the bathroom to do "our business". It was way too expensive. I don't mind paying the money for a greet hotel, this was mediocre. You can spend just as much and stay next door at the Hilton.
Fair price but definitely feels like best Western. I guess what you pay is what you get.
It is dirty and for Europe People too expensive . If you are booking in USA, than you must pay for 14 days 2700$ , in Europe 8000
Great hotel staff, friendly and experienced bartenders. Amazing rooms. Though shower heads in the shower are a bit ehh.
I am staying at this hotel now. Service is good, facility is a bit tired. Magnetic key failed three times already, noises from street awful because of thin glass windows (not air tight).First night was literally sleepless. Also most of rooms will not have ocean views due to building orientation.
I gave additional one star for quality of service. Otherwise hotel only deserve two stars.
We stayed three nights at The Modern in Honolulu. This was our 2nd stay in the same hotel after 2013. The location in walking distance to the Waikiki Beach and the Ala Moana Shopping Center and many other points of interest is very good. The hotel is modern, the room was quite, very clean and the staff friendly. Full recommendation, we will come back.
The venue itself is very nice and beautiful. But, while waiting for food a pigeon landed in our food. The server played it off that it didn't happen and served it anyways! Disgusting!!
