During the COVID19 outbreak the staff are very unprofessional and unresponsive. They delivered all packages to doors but sometimes the delivery was delayed by almost a week. When I call them to complain about this they were not being nice, although it is completely their fault. They saved so much money since they had to cancel events, coffee bars, close study room/gym, and many people moved out early, but the quality of their service is worse.

From what I heard, about The Academy on Charles, I was highly impressed. But soon after that, they locked my daughter out of her room (without warning) ostensibly because of lack of Home Insurance. So, now I know the administrators there (Tiffany, and others) were mean, callous, and insensitive, . Locking out a student in that 100 degree heat is truly inhuman. Also, my Not only that, Maryland Law allows just $25 for application fee. Academy charges $40, in violation of State law.
The office Staff is beyond friendly, Maintenance has taken care of requests in a timely fashion, and did I mention the Resident Events?! Absolutely love how the staff shows their appreciation for their residents and come on, who doesn't love FREE food? =] It's such a nice breather and be able to unwind in between the stress of daily life! <3
Very clean and convenient place to live, especially if you attend one of the universities in the area. I love that the rent is all-inclusive and that I don't have to worry about paying various utility bills. I also love how accommodating management is. And their resident events are awesome!
"Shawn" of the maintenance is malicious, vindictive, impossible to deal with, RUDE, offensive, provoking and bullying in terms of eyes, facial expressions, gestures, voice, tone, words, and behaviors, but compels the residents that receive services to please him however he is in terms of all these aspects. Although it seems this person started since this year, but because of how he is is to the most negatively unbelievable, I am surprised that no one has mentioned this before, and I personally have heard on the spot the times he talked to other residents. I really doubt how this person can still have a job and work. Horrifyingly, the leasing manager Janai Lane seems to have a particular close relation with him and also believes it is a matter of course whatever he does and no one should let him feel unpleased at all.
I was a Hopkins graduate student and I just moved out. I think this apartment is the best among the apartment buildings near the school. The first floor is spacious, and facilities inside the house are user-friendly , and staffs are responsible.I like the roof, the free coffee downstair (Although it is closed during covid-19) and the study room I think studying here makes me happy and feel like home. Really recommend this apartment.
We moved in a little less than a week ago and since then our experience with the varsity has been only negative. Our AC has been broken the entire time we have been here despite twice daily visits to the leasing office to visit Tatiana and when it became apparent that she didn't have the power to make anything happen we began speaking with the property manager Wendy Wright. Wendy has been very unsympathetic to our situation and will not let us stay in another unit or discount our rent even though they are legally required to come to a solution because of rising outdoor temperatures. With these units costing $1250 a month per room you would expect to be treated better by management. I assume their location close to campus makes it so they don't have to maintain repeat business and they just turn over students every year.
Hard to believe I m the only one pointing this out... Sadly, two of The Academy on Charles leasing office staff members feel the need to write a review of their own workplace. Referring to Enoch K s review of her daughter s experience, she recalls the building administration as being mean, callous and insensitive, specifically mentioning Tiffany. While I can speak to her testimony, I must first bring up that the Tiffany she speaks of is the same Tiffany Anne Quezon who wrote a gleaming review of her experience with the Academy... Ironically, Ms. Quezon actually works in the leasing office here (I picked up packages from her once a week), and I recognize her from her profile photo. I also recognize Chelsea E (a recent reviewer here) as a staff member (although she was at least kind to me). Who can believe all of these five star reviews knowing that at least two of them were written by their own staff members? (Maybe their reviews will be deleted upon reading this but if not, just scroll down).
Dishonesty aside, I did not have a positive experience during my time here as much as I wanted to. As a relet over the summer for the purpose of a 5-days-a-week organic chemistry course, I needed a three day lease extension since my lease ended on the 31st but my course ended on the 3rd. I requested it ahead of time, but the administration stated that these requests needed to be submitted months ahead of time, before I even knew I would be living here. However, I heard nothing about this at the time of signing my lease or moving in. My extension request was denied, and Tiffany and other staff (Desiree) showed little to no sympathy, pushing me to move all of my belongings to a hotel room three days before my final exam, and I even received an email threatening to charge me thousands of dollars. I understand that a lease extension for my specific unit may not be possible, but there was zero effort made in finding me a place to stay in the entire building. Two weeks later, I discovered that there were indeed empty units I could move into; however, Tiffany and Desiree directly denied me of my request to do so over and over. The intentions of those staff members were clear; they were cruel, harsh and unforgiving, giving no consideration to my situation or to possible solutions which could be arranged. Later, Chelsea and her male coworker (not sure of his name) offered to try to find me another place in the building to stay. I am very grateful for their efforts, but am shocked that Tiffany and Desiree would not budge in the slightest to try to help.
For a while, I thought that my situation was the odd one out, that perhaps I did something wrong or that I could ve done more. After reading about others experiences with some of the intolerant and harrowing staff members here, I ve realized that I m not the only one. I realize that this is a modern building with private bathrooms, ideal for many. If nothing goes wrong and you never have any issues which the staff would need to accommodate for, I m sure you would have a fantastic time living here. Whether you want to take that risk? It s up to you.
Just my advice. Life at Hopkins can be plenty challenging as is, and the staff here certainly did not make my summer any easier.
I am currently staying in this facility for my Junior year at Hopkins. The management did not do anything at all to help any student during the COVID virus. They shut down building resources but held students to their lease obligations. Although all university operations were cancelled and students were sent home, so the academy did not even have utility expenses, they did not show any compassion what so ever. Not offering payment assistance or cancellation forgiveness. They forced students to either pay or damage their credit histories. Highly recommend staying in 9-East instead of this place. 9-East worked with residents and gave them a buy out of their leases.
Ariel in the leasing office is amazing. She constantly takes my calls and answers all my questions and concerns with patience and understanding. She has gone above and beyond! I am assured this will continue after move in date! Thank you Ariel!
Sometimes my room gets colder than my roommates when we set the thermostat. In addition, I had one leakage. One final thing is that sometimes my shower runs out of hot water when I shower at night.
Poor management and unfriendly staff. Had to pick up packages before 5pm, which is a problem for students. Actual charges is different from the lease, which happen to many, and it is hard to ask them fix.
