We stayed at the Prince of Wales for a short vacation in Wine Country. Overall it was a very nice experience, with beautiful decor and great service.
Lounge:
We stopped in at the lounge for some fine cheese and drinks upon arrival from a winery tour. The cheese selection was excellent, and was served with honey, crisps of muesli bread, and dried cranberries. My wife had the Sauvignon Blanc, and I had some insane genius of a drink with ice wine and sortilege, through a chocolate straw. Fantastic.
Tea Room:
We had the traditional tea service around 4pm (tea time, right?) in their beautiful tea room. The server was knowledgeable about the teas, and brought us boxes of teas to smell and look at before deciding. We had the Heavenly Cream tea, which was quite possibly the best tea I've ever had. It was served with a 3-tiered platter of delicious treats, as well as homemade jam, butter and clotted cream. We dressed up fancy, and had a wonderful time eating scones and quoting Oscar Wilde. The only drawback was that the service was slow towards the end; I think there was only one server and she was cleaning up the tea room as we finished up.
Pool:
We had a dip in their pool and hot tub in the evening. Although small, the pool room had a great ambience with large, interesting paintings and skylight windows (I think). The hot tub was relaxing, if not that hot (a warm tub?). The pool was small, but refreshing. The pool area had an intimate, relaxing feel, and we easily spent an hour in there without getting tired of the water and cool paintings.
Room:
Our room was on the second floor of the south wing. The hallway to the room smelt alternately of bubble gum and gross mustiness (confined to one of the staircases). Thankfully, the smell did not extend to our room. The room itself was fine; with a Keurig coffee maker for those interested (the best hotel coffee I've had in awhile!). There was only 1 bed-side table, which was a bit disappointing. We were given water and oranges, which was a welcome touch and very tasty. The bed was a little firm for our liking. The wireless speed left something to be desired.
Decor:
Overall, the hotel has a fantastic decor. It is worth going just to see all of the different styles and paintings. An afternoon spent in the tea room / lounge would be a good excuse to look around.
We did not try the spa or restaurant, so we can't comment on those, but the restaurant looked quite good.
