Nice pub usually has a good beer as guest. Lovely to sit in the garden on a summers evening. Limited seating inside for the bar because it's largely taken up by the restaurant. Only hope the redevelopment of Bircherley Green doesn't bring any distruption.

It's a nice place, however a bit pricey compared to other bars in Hertford and often too quiet! Has lots of potential to be a really nice bar, especially for 30+ crowd, but for some reason, isn't that busy.

A brilliant Thursday night, lovely fish and chips and my girlfriend polished off a rack of ribs and corn on the cob! (She likes her food and this did not disappoint!). Fantastic experience - would recommend even though I dropped a lovely chip on the floor!

Excellent venue, superbly located riverside. Huge range of ales, good range of wines, bottled beers and gins. Food is superb, very good value for money, very well cooked, generously portioned. Will be returning.

The Old Barge is situated next to the river in the beautiful, historic market town of Hertford. A roaring fire on a cold winters day, lovely staff and a friendly welcome. The chefs team have put together an incredible menu which has something for everyone and the quality of the food is excellent. The beer is expertly kept and, importantly, is consistent. A CAMRA meeting in there today speaks volumes to those that like their ales. There is also a great selection of wines and spirits.
Terrific pub, Excellent food, wonderful drinks and super-friendly and efficient staff. Our thanks to all concerned .

Very attentive staff, well looked after and served. all good on the COVID front, felt safe and well distanced, we went on a Sunday afternoon (had to pre book for 6) just for drinks but enjoyed nibbles and then were offered the most enormous Yorkshire s left over from their Sunday roast!

Everything about this place is great. Great range of beer, ale and cider. Good food (more vegan options please). Staff are awesome and happy to natter. Gets busy when the sun comes out because the community know it's the place to be. The smoking area is very good, there are seats reserved for the habit which is a nice touch. I'm sad though, since I've now quit smoking

Favourite pub in Hertford. Right beside the canal with outdoor seating, log fires during the winter inside and a decent beer selection. Good solid pub grub and friendly environment to drink in.

I am the landlady so somewhat biased, but great beer, great food, comfortable surroundings, traditional setting, river views, friendly & knowledgeable staff, open fire, children friendly in the daytime, live music, quiz nights, food & drink events, big screen tv & surround sound in a private function room, venue for hire for corporate events or private parties.....& much more, what more could you want?

A lovely and cosy place. Prices a bit higher than the normal pubs. Next to a river, has a little bit of outside space with benches in the front. As much as i could explore, it looks quite small, not very many people fit inside.

Tucked away on a historic island in the middle of Hertford, this pub has low slung ceilings and an old world vibe in the bar area, but with a bright and airy dining space at the back. The food was great with a wide variety of pub grub, and the guest ales were interesting and varied.

Not the pub for bargain hunters! But good selection of beers, and a nice atmosphere to enjoy your drink.

Food is good you would have to book to get a table at the weekend i would think.

Has a beer garden that is lovely in the summer, and busy.

Well worth a visit.

Good pub located beside a canal in Hertford. Excellent food reasonably priced when visited on a Sunday. Good cider selection, but only one real ale on. Car park a walk away which can be accessed via the canal towpath.

My family and I have been going for years but were very disappointed by our recent visit. We called in advance to reserve a table as we had family visiting, we were advised that the only time available was 5pm however we were assured that they would definitely have roasts left at that time. Upon arrival there was no booking however we were fortunate or not as the case may be that there was a table available. The vegetarian roast is the same price as the meat one but we were told that we would get additional roast and vegetables. When the roast came out it was tiny, with what can only be described as a very poor selection of vegetables (one tiny carrot, one miniature corn on the cob and sliced courgettes, perhaps they had run out of more standard vegetables served with a roast dinner?!) The vegetarians in fact did not get any extra. When we queried this we were told that we had in fact received extra, apparently you normally get 4 potatoes and the veggies got 5, given that they were actually about a 4th of a whole potato we were speechless. They also previously served cauliflower cheese which is a great option for vegetarians however this has been removed from the menu. They did reduce the bill in the end but sadly the whole experience was a real let down so we went elsewhere for our desserts and won't be returning any time soon.

A mixed experience. The Old Barge was well reviewed and we saw on their website that they did Sunday roasts, so we dropped by to experience it. Firstly I should say the staff were friendly and attentive, and the best part of the experience, but the food itself could have been better.

We both had a slow-cooked beef roast dinner. My beef - rather than being tender (my assumption from being slow-cooked), was quite tough. In fact some of it was inedible because it was dry and even blackened at the corners. I imagine it had been at the surface of the slow cooker and thus caught, so I had to leave bits of the meat, which was not a promising start.

The veg that came alongside was similarly mediocre - the swede was completely underdone and almost difficult to chew. The other veg was generally acceptable and mostly boiled to the point of tastelessness. The highlights were the roast potatoes however, which were great. The Yorkshire pudding was also to a good standard.

For dessert we had a fruit crumble with custard (great) and the Bailey's bread and butter pudding (even greater), which saved the meal in our opinion.

Other than that, the choice of beers was good and our selections were of good quality. Overall I'd recommend a visit but avoid the Sunday roast like the plague.

Lovely beer and food! Great venue upstairs where they show the rugby but also available to hire for private functions! The Sunday roasts are also amazing, be sure to book a table though as restaurant gets quite busy!

Popped in this pub after a walk along the river from Ware to Hertford. Safe outside seating only. Warm welcome. All tables had their own App so that you could order everything from your table. Limited beer choice for my liking but still OK and a treat to actually sit at a Pub!
