Tiny rooms (Manhattan style) but well equipped and organized. Very clean and great service. Location is perfect (Times Square & Empire State Building by walking distance) and Penn Station just by the door. Tick Tock dinner, located at the hotel lobby, is a great option for a tasty & unhealthy american breakfast.

They say free wifi but yet there is a "facilities fee" or a "resort fee."" Hmmm. False advertising. Then, if you are searching rates in NY, strangely the "facilities fee" or "resort fee" are not shown. No, you only see those after the fact.
So you end up paying close to $30.00 for the um, "free" wifi and the um, "gym" that you can choose whether to use or not. But yet, you have this mandatory fee on top of your nightly rate? Shame. I hope the government gets involved and fines this hotel.
Do not stay at this out dated place; you've been warned.

I come to Manhattan regularly and this is probably my least favorite hotel so far.

Pros - good location, good security, management is friendly, the food at their breakfast diner is good.

Cons- the hotel mixed up our reservation and amenities, horribly uncomfortable pull out sofa, mold in hallways, incredibly rude diner staff, and the hotel is not suited for the volume of people they re meant to be accommodating.

We were promised an updated suite when we booked the hotel but when we checked in they told us that they only had a two queen bed room available for our party of 6. They were able to find us a not renovated suite (2 beds and a pull out couch) to accommodate our party and offered us free breakfast to make up for it.

However, the ceiling right outside our door was molding, the room is quite outdated (especially the bathroom), and the sofa bed is extremely uncomfortable. When I asked for additional pillows to lay on since the sofa bed is awful, they said they had run out of pillows in the hotel.

The next morning the front desk couldn t find that we had breakfast on our reservation so we ended up needing to spend 30 minutes with them only for them to find that we did in fact have breakfast. But when we went to get breakfast the wait staff was rude and overtly behaved as if they didn t want to serve us since we had breakfast vouchers. It was uncomfortable eating there.

Lastly, they don t have adequate seating or staff in the lobby for the volume of people who are checking in/out. We couldn t find any place to sit and wait while we retrieved our luggage which was a 30 minute wait in line.

There are so many better places to stay in Manhattan. This hotel is iconic but it doesn t have that much else going for it.

You get for what you pay and it is good money, clean, nice service, great location. Noisy? Yes but what hotel is not in this hood? However a little warning: unexpected hotel fee for the WiFi and other services $30 per day...

Terrible staff. Small rooms. Charged $170 to change reservation by one week. Then they lost my reservation, and I had to pay $300 for the room. So in the end I had to pay around $500 for a 200 sq foot room which I only needed for 8 hours.

Rooms are old an dated. Safe in the closet makes the depth of the closet too shallow to hang more than a few things. TV didn't work, tried to watch the NFL playoffs and the tv kept shorting out. Very few plugs, fittings on plugs were loose. Had to get my key card replaced, locks were busted. All in all a poor experience, there are cheaper more modern hotels right near by.

The room is really small, dirty and noisy. The lift is a joke. The location is close to Time SQ but also the most crowded and filthy area in Manhattan. Depends on what you need but definitely not the best choice for $400.

Perfectly placed hotel in respect to the main attractions such as Madison Square Garden, times square, shopping areas including Macy's; 34th Penn Subway station is across the road as is the main stop for the tour buses. Staff extremely helpful, rooms immaculate and another plus point was the security of the front area. Definitely recommend this hotel.

The hotel is okay, but the outdated rooms of the hotel need a big change. The staff here are very friendly. The hotel is close to all convenient facilities. The location is very good. It is close to Macy's and the station. These experiences in New York are great.

Great hotel in a great location! Rooms nice, modern and clean. The rooms are very small with not a lot of space for your luggage/stuff. 4 adults in a double room is very tight, but doable. Great location to Penn Station subway and MSG area. Will stay there again.

This is a clean, comfortable hotel. It was convenient to everything I wanted to see in New York and Madison Square Garden, as well as easy subway access, were right there. It is a safe neighborhood and within walking distance of Times Square and other areas. There is also easy access to Citibikes. However, my guest room was rather bland, exceptionally small and the bathroom as tight. You would be hard pressed to have more than a single person occupying this space. The closet was also completely inadequate, so I am glad I didn't need it. If you are looking for a lower cost option, but one that is convenient, check it out. Just know that luxury isn't the primary priority for most of this property.

This old, historic hotel is very close to Times Square, so a great location for tourists looking to be able to be steps away from the action. The hotel is historic, which comes with beautiful appointments and touches. On the flip side, it's a little work, stains, linens with holes, dirty doors. The rooms are pretty normal for NYC (small), but the AC is solid, and they're fairly quiet. There are three restaurants in the hotel, but only one provides room service. Be aware this isn't normal room service from hotel employees, instead is a restaurant employee (not affiliated with the hotel) who drops it off. Strange, but it works. The meeting space is nice, with huge chandeliers and a sense of the golden oldies. WiFi was fast, and my room had a desk to work in. Overall a solid hotel.

Rooms vary a lot in quality, size and feel. some have great views others have none. Service is good but not great. Close to Penn station and express bus drop off from JFK at Penn was very convenient!

Waste of money. It's an old hotel, old fixtures, over crowded, and dirty running water. The only good thing about this hotel is the staff. The staff is super helpful and cared about our concerns of the dirty water situation. They're the only reason why this hotel received any stars from me.

Nice hotel with bags of history. Being refurbished but the 21st floor not quite there yet! No tea or coffee making facilities in the room which was a little annoying. There's a coffee shop in the lobby but not much use when you flew in from the UK and have jet lag at 3am. Staff friendly, good location.

Had a very pleasant stay back in June '16. I love the architecture as well as the awesome view of Empire State Building. The employees are very kind as well.
As a Swede I feel the coffee could be a bit stronger though, but a double espresso worked well as a substitute.

Great location, quite nice hotel room, nice view, small bathroom, simple breakfast. Not yet worthy of a 4-star, service not yet satisfactory, charged wrong fee,do not give breakfast vouchers to guests, not professional enough

Every thing is good except the customer service through telephone because there is no credibility for the information that I got. I asked for double bed or a sofa, and they told me okay. When I arrived nothing is happened. In fact they asked for fees and extra charge. Thank God for dealing with a good worker in the reception. Afroza, she was sooo helpful. All in All, the hotel is so amazing

The room was fine, and the history of the hotel was interesting. The location was safe and centrally located. Very busy area filled with chain resturaunts and boring stores. Head a couple of blocks over for a more interesting experience...and avoid the neighborhood all together if you don't like Macy's and TGI Fridays. But if you have to stay in this area do it at the hotel new yorker!

We booked in May 2016 for a week in February 2017, the holiday company we booked with went bust but we contacted the hotel three times and the last one 2 days before departure to confirm room was still booked. On every occasion we were told everything was fine as they were Paid up front by holiday company. On arrival was told room wasn't paid for and as I was travelling with tired ten year old twins I was left no choice but to pay again! Be very aware as holiday company have said room was paid for up front to get lower price and hotel were trying it on.

Interesting you should ask - I lived there briefly as a member of the Unification Church in the early 1980's - fast forward to yesterday as I attended a prayer breakfast later hung out in the lobby enjoying my iced mocha and conversing with a friend I couldn't help but notice the international collection of folks in this grand old hotel that at one time was slated for the ball n' chain is now restored to it's former glory
