The chance to visit a live, active dig site shouldn't be passed up. It was a great way to get out of the sweltering sun, as well as being quite fun and informative! If you ever find yourself in the area, give it a visit!

Simply loved this place! The people working on the dig were fantastic about taking the time away from their work to talk to visitors and answer all questions. Everybody should visit this place at least once in their lives!

Great educational museum. Very friendly staff. The history of the mammoths is amazing as well as how long this took to form. How deep the out goes surprised me. Haven't been here in 40 years and it sure has changed for the better.

The family enjoyed this ongoing excavation. We had an excellent guided tour and had time to explore on our own. We were also able to talk with the people excavating and they were wonderful! (You don't get to do any digging yourself.)

The work that they are doing here is phenomenal, and I'm so glad we made the journey from Custer to check it out. While the entire staff was friendly, Dr. Mead was exceptional. We had the privilege of meeting him when the staff learned how our daughter was very interested in archaeology. He treated her like the most important person in the room, and was very encouraging. While I recognize that's not a normal part of the experience for most visitors, it shows the level of dedication and hospitality among the staff and volunteers, and we were very grateful.

WOW, they have found around 60 mammoths in the dig site. There is an excellent example of an entire mammoth during the tour that shoes how his legs are laid out, spinal vertebrae, and more. The guides give great examples and education during the tour.

A must! You won t believe your eyes! The story of how it was discovered and came to be what it is today is a shining example of philanthropy. Absolutely amazing exhibits and the dig site is an ongoing process. I never knew the mammoths were hunted by man. Fascinating! Other extinct mammals were caught in this sinkhole which trapped and preserved for us to see today.

It was so moving being there and seeing the past. Seeing something that used to be alive and is now being brought back to be studied and remembered. For anyone interested in fossils needs to go here. How else will you get to go to a active dig site?

Pretty good attraction in Hot Springs SD for the family. The Mammoth dig and bones are pretty cool. Takes about an hour to do the tour and walk around site. Actual digging occurs only in July. If you have some extra time after Mt Rushmore it's worth checking out.

Very interesting history this place has. If you or your kids are in to paleontology at all, this is for you! It's cool that it's an active dig site and you can see them at work. Only downside is the exhibit hall itself is small and there aren't a lot of interactive exhibits for the kids so my little one was bored quickly.

I had written the mammoth site a while back stating that my sister had passed away and that I was taking my nieces and nephews there, I asked prices , and was hoping for a miracle cause we did not have Enough stop in on our short vacation. Unbelievably I received coupons in the mail before we even took off for vacation. I was very surprised and just wanted to thank everyone at the mammoth site, because the kids absolutely loved it and we had an amazing time! They went Above and beyond, thank you!

My daughters and I arrived at the site by mistake. The wind was blowing and we had been choosing roads that it would be easier to travel on to get to our campground. We ran into the site, which was a thrill to all of us. we enjoyed the site and I have gone as far to say it was my favorite place on our 3 week trip. Lovely, educational and a marvel.

The mammoth site was awesome. When we first got there we saw the large space outside and assumed we had to dig outside.

Luckily we went inside and found out the dig site was inside. The dig site was great and the museum afterwards was cool. I learned a lot of interesting things and enjoyed looking at the fossils. This is a great place for kids

This museum was fascinating. I thought we'd visit for less than an hour, but we were there almost 2 hrs. The tour takes you completely around the dig, while Paleontologists work exposing more bones.

Option to self-tour is a time saver if you aren't interested in the group tour. Some excellent and varied displays in the exhibit center made it much more interesting if you want something beyond the digs.
