This Y has newer machines, bells and whistles. Very nice gym. Majority of the staff friendly and helpful The early morning front desk staff could be a lot more inviting. Both downtown and East side, everybody that walks in the door feels like Norm from cheers. Greeted with a smile and a how do you do. Glenwood is rather uppity and pretentious. Glenwood is truly the last of my three choices in the area of YMCA's. in fact I drive 5 miles to get to the East side ymca, rather than the 1 mile to get to Glenwood.

I was lied to several times when i signed up. I was told I could bring 1 or 2 young guests (kids under 10) with my own children if I wanted too and that guest passes were not hard to get at all. Turns out you are issued 3 passes a year and that is it. I was told that I could get into some classes and then found out they were restricted to seniors only. The place was always packed and not easy to use I was told it was only crowded in January when everyone makes their New Years resolution. I also was told canceling my membership would only take a phone call but now they are insisting I come in and fill out paperwork. I'm so pissed and I just want them to stop debiting my account.

I love this place because of the size, more than anything. I've been working to get back in shape after the military but, I'm not entirely comfortable in large crowds. The size, layout and available amenities really allow me to work out at ease, unlike many gyms that are just a single, open, crowded room. The TV's on the ellipticals make 30 min of cardio seem like 5 min and I can almost always find a relatively deserted corner for weight training with practically no wait for a machine. The separate lap pool and family pool means I rarely have to wait for a lane to swim laps and if I want to bring the kids for recreation, I don't have to wait for open swim. The staff has always been very friendly, helpful and attentive to any inappropriate behavior. Recently I was on a fixed weight machine and noticed a guy just sitting at a machine not working out. As fast as I realized this creep was just ogling a woman on a treadmill the attendant was already en route to handle it. Beyond the many great things that can be said about the Y, in general, a membership to this excellent facility grants access to the other facilities in the area. That's a pretty great value to me.

I've been a member of the Y for 5 years because of it's mission and the amenities. I like how they do so much for the community, allow youth a place to play, and because of their Christian foundation (some will argue its all-encompassing now, which is true, but that's not the principles it was founded with.) The pro's of this branch are: tons of classes to utilize, very spacious, coffee in the mornings, friendly staff (for the most part) and they keep it very clean. However, over the years the things that upset me is that firstly, you're paying A LOT of money for membership, I pay near $40 for an individual plan. Secondly, things are often broken, and when they are, they're not replaced for a week or so at a time. It shouldn't take 2 weeks to fix a cable on a machine. The thing that gets me the most is the steam room is often not working correctly by not putting out enough steam, and above all, the dry-sauna is useless. They DO NOT LET YOU put water on the rocks, and its often barely warm enough to sweat, maybe around 120 degrees or so... (I understand a lot of that is from opening/closing the door) but EVERY sauna is designed to put water on rocks, it releases steam and helps the heating sensation, the only reason to not allow water on the rocks is because 'it may reduce the life of the sauna element.' hence, they're trying to save money. It's not the heat that makes you sweat, it's the humidity, and according to many sources, "A properly functioning sauna should be operated at 180-200 degrees Fahrenheit." They also recommend using some essential oils to help open the lungs and your pores. However, try doing that at the Y and they're gonna kick you out because they don't know how a properly functioning sauna is supposed to work. Any who, I like the Y still for what it is, I enjoy being able to go to any branch in the county but a lot of people don't know all what your membership includes, such as: 'The Away Program' where you can access different Y's across the country when traveling. My final thoughts are if you're paying that much per month, they should do a better job keeping equipment maintained and improving the amenities that differ it from other standard gyms.
Lastly, i had an incident where I closed the bank account where my membership was being drawn from. I gave them advance notice that I'd like to switch it but they said it was fine. Turns out I got a $25 bounced check fee to start my membership back up. This place has money, don't let them fool you.

This is the best gym I've ever been to, and I've been to many. Nice building, friendly staff, excellent equipment and pool, and the classes and instructors are on point. I especially enjoyed the yoga and PiYo classes. They will also give scholarships to people based on income. I did this while I was living on my own in Erie and working a receptionist job. I also got a young adult rate. I had only ever been to franchises and college gyms before moving to Erie, so this was my first YMCA experience. The sense of community combined with quality fitness resources make this YMCA one of a kind. I moved to Pittsburgh a few months ago for a different job and I go to a different gym now. It's just not the same. I miss the Glenwood Y. Canceling my membership was extremely easy though.

They are understaffed and overworked. The staff is clearly stressed out (every time I go there). When I try to bring my baby to the child watch center, so that I can spend time with my other 2 children, they have been at full capacity each time I have tried! This is very frustrating. Other YMCAs do not have this issue because previously I have been able to reserve times. They play TV in the children watch area constantly as well. As a wellness center I expect that having a television is a contradiction. The hours are not helpful either. On a side not, I have arrived at times when the child care kids are being walked from the playground back indoors, and I have found the the teenage staff in charge of the children are rude. I have witnessed them speaking to these kids in a degrading manner. If they do not have a passion for children than they should not have been hired!! I would NEVER pay to have my children tone in these peoples are! Please pass on the information to your loved ones!

I've been to most of the larger Y's around the state, and this is one of the best in PA. However, if you need to park close to the building, you will have difficulty after 4pm weekdays, and on Saturday and Sunday mornings. The locker rooms and pool could be kept much cleaner. The staff is helpful.

The staff is great. They're very helpful and outgoing. The facilities are not modern, but they're kept clean and in good working order. They have a lot of good equipment. I have never taken a class, but there seems to be a lot of them.

Nacy joe who is a supervisor at the Glenwood ymca is a person who likes to discriminate, " it's the bigger people who wear them wrong who we have a problem with" is what was told to me after she told me my active wear was inappropriate to wear!!!

It's a great family center for events and exercise. I've visited the other locations in Erie and this one best fits our needs. It's not a college, competitive gym atmosphere like the Downtown YMCA. It's got two walking/running tracks, one around the basement fitness room and the other in its own room above the 2 gym with basketball courts. It's an amazing location! The Wi-Fi is just as terrible as all the other locations so I won't use that against them. I do wish that they'd upgrade the routers to at least deliver a little signal. But overall it's a wonderful establishment!

A staff Mr. Darryl in the preschool department pushed my 4 year old out of his classroom and embarrassed him in front of his classmates. Following that I tried to talk to him in private without my son being around because he is just a child and doesnt understand what is going on. He then proceeded to put his knee into my sons face as i tried leading him back in the class! The director was no help in resolving this issue, I was not apologized to or anything and am now taking my son out of their program. PLEASE ADVISE I WILL BE PROTESTING THIS FRIDAY!

The Glenwood YMCA is by far the worst gym I have ever been to. Called them and asked if they were doing day passes so I could try out the gym (most gyms let you try it out for free) the answer - no. Fine. I asked if I could pay for a day pass. The answer - no. The only way you could use the gym is if you buy a membership. Fine. I figured the Y must be pretty nice. Signed up for a family membership so me, my wife, my son, and nephew could all use it once covid is done. 70 bucks later. I finally can use the gym. The machines are upstairs - the free weights are 4 sets of stairs and a mile walk downstairs in a room no bigger than my kitchen (that isn t big) in a 100 degree basement. On top of that the weights were rubber and look like they d been chewed - and the benches were ripped. Needless to say. I literally cancelled my membership on the way out. Probably the first time any gym has had someone sign up and cancel on the same day . Rate it 0/10

Love this gym...has lot's of newer machines and plenty of classes for me to explore down the road. The facility is clean and has everything you could want. My only gripe is the price. I only stopped going to Planet Fitness because it is so far away from me.
