My relative spent roughly two weeks at the Hurlbut while recovering from hip replacement surgery.

PROS (from least to most significant):
*CLEAN facility (virtually no odor!)
*Pleasant rooms; lots of light, not at all gloomy or depressing
*Caring CNA's & nurses (overall, they were exceptional)
*EXCELLENT rehab staff and facilities

CONS (from least to most significant):
*No menus for special dietary needs (vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free, etc.); they did try to make accommodations, but in this era, with more and more people following a plant-based diet, this should be an option
*Poor communication with family members regarding medications administered (changes made in medication without any notification whatsoever, and staff appeared evasive or even annoyed or hostile when asked. At one time they were administering a double dose of my relative's allergy meds on a daily basis, when the order was for half the dose on an as-needed basis; dizziness was the result, and while that might not be a problem for the normal person, someone recovering from joint replacement does not need to be any less stable when walking!)
*Poor record keeping in evidence (my relative had been at the Hurlbut for two days, and guests coming in were told no one was in that room; even worse, the night nurse gave my relative someone else's medications one night. I was there and caught the error; I was shown the log of the person supposedly in my relative's bed--this person was moved to a different wing at least a week before, and yet they still had the person assigned to my relative's bed. Had I not been there, my relative would have received a cocktail of meds that belonged to someone else!)

I greatly appreciate the care the nurses and therapists gave to my mother. I highly recommend utilizing the Hurlbut for rehab. The therapy team motivated my mom to stay active again after her stroke

Recently I saw an advertisement on TV about Hurlbut. I had a loved one at Seneca Nursing Home for a short time recently. It is also suppose to be a rehabilitation facility. What was explained to me and what i observed, there is no way anyone could be rehabilitated in this facility to return home. In my opinion they are under staffed and many are unqualified. They have no common sense as how to handle patients with specific needs to make them comfortable. To be kind, the facility conditions and protocols are (sad). To be blunt, (horrible).

Now let's get to the numbers. According to Hurlbut, they receive over $10,000 per/month per/patient. At Seneca Nursing Home they have approx. 80 patients. That's over $800,000 a month and over 9 million dollars a year for a very small facility. In my opinion Seneca is in poor condition, under staffed, with some unqualified staff. It is reasonable to assume that Hurlbut operates all its facilities in a similar manner. Where does the money go? It would be interesting to know what profit they make. What the CEO and all the "Administrative" costs are compared to actual patient care. Should medical facilities "profit" off poor health care? And just to put icing on the cake, I received a bill from Seneca on July 25 for over $1800 for the period of July 21-July 31. My loved one left Seneca on July 17th and passed away on July 18th. Look at the dates. I guess you can see where their priorities are. Maybe they should spend less money on advertising and more on proper care. Word of mouth is much better than any TV ad. Sad thing is, there are many companies who exploit the elderly for ridiculously high salaries and profits over proper care. I had to give a rating of at least 1 star in order to post but my real rating would be 0.

This place is filthy and smells. If you walk in the door of a nursing home and all you can smell is urine, then you know it's not clean. Everything I looked at was dirty from hallways to bathrooms. This housekeeping supervisor should be let go and a qualified one hired.

My mom was at The Hurlbut on E. Henrietta Rd for rehab in 2012 for a broken collarbone. Even though we told them she couldn't tolerate morphine, they gave it to her anyway and kept that information from our family. She threw up almost everyday she was there, for 5 weeks, and was so weak she wanted to sleep all the time. When we asked why she was throwing up we were told it was because she had an infection. When she was being discharged, I found out about it and was told they would wean her off of it before she was sent back to her assisted living facility. They did not do what they said and when we asked her own doctor to change her medications back to what she was being given before her rehab she went through withdrawal. I would not recommend The Hurlbut to anyone and wish our family had turned them in for what
they did to our mom. The only good thing about her stay there was their rehab program. That was excellent.

my dad was admitted yesterday to the rehab unit at Hurlbut in Brighton and everyone starting with reception to nursing to PA and the rehab team of Physical and Occupational therapy as well as his aides were friendly, professional and genuine. I left my most precious father in very good hands!
