The room tried to be shabby chic but was just shabby. I was up at 3am trying to get the cistern to stop dripping. The bed was awful - I like a soft bed but it felt like the springs had given out years ago. People were talking in the bar More

Scruffy pub. TV is on loud and then rock music starts up loud from somewhere. Horrid. People get up and leave, unable to tolerate the noise.
This pub is separate from the perfectly respectable hotel but they do share a car park.

Amazing food coupled with incredibly polite and efficient service.

I'd like to have seen steaks on the menu, but I understand it changes frequently and actually it meant I chose something I wouldn't usually have which turned out well in the end.

Although not "cheap", I consider it incredibly good value for money given the level of service and quality of the food.

We came here for Sunday lunch as the food was recommended to us.
Wish we hadn t of bothered.
Expected more from a 2 rosette place.
Pre booked a table in the restaurant - there were no other diners in there so reverted back to the bar.
The food was just ok. Everything under seasoned and everything lacked taste.
The staff were friendly but when I come out to eat I don t really want to hear the staff chatting amongst themselves complaining about the hours they re working.
Needles to say we skipped dessert and coffee and went to strawberry fields just down the road.
Very disappointed.

Very nice hotel but we were accommodated over the road in the coach house, which was a bit odd. It was a brand new room and very nice but you could hear every little noise from the room above and im sure we disturbed them when we came in from the pub. Breakfast was good but evening meal average. Lamb was chewy and very expensive.

I have never stayed at hotel that gave a more homely atmosphere than this one. The rooms were beyond comfortable, staff extremely friendly and the kitchen was more than capable in dealing with my dietary requirements (gluten free bread etc.). Would highly recommend.

A classic British hotel and restaurant. Quite well maintained but it was quite tired in places. Our room was quite small and we were woken up by the TV in the next room. The food was good but it was overshadowed by the dreadful service. When we complained we were told the F&B manager was off sick and they had new staff in. They did refund all our drinks though.

We didn't really get to see much of the hotel as we were only using it as a base for a night. The room was pleasant enough, if a little dated. The staff I had interaction with were more than helpful. Unfortunately, other people in the group had a rather different experience with the guy on reception, and we're not impressed with his manner or attitude. But based purely on my experience I would say it is good as there is for such a small town. If you are looking for a much more upmarket ( although more costly ) stay, then Lewtrenchard Manor ( a couple of miles from Lifton ) is amazing.

I visited the hotel on a business trip. The staff were very friendly and kind. Only thing I didn't like was my room slept of dogs and I felt itchy all night.

Otherwise great food and excellent service.

Our favourite hotel for an indulgent short stop on way into Cornwall about once a year. Not cheap but first class service, comfortable rooms and good food in restaurant and bar. Comfortable lounge. Interesting walks around village. Fishing.

We came for lunch on bank holiday Monday and found the food and service disappointing, we came last New Year s Eve when the food was amazing full of flavour and just wow ! This time the soup had no flavour and my wifes fish and chips were soggy and tasteless, I know it was only bar food but it wasn t the same

Good food but the service was appalling. Waited 50 minutes for the first course and a further 40 for the mains - didn't bother with dessert or coffee as after 2 hours ran out of time. Food cooked well, but mains delivered less the trimmings which never did arrive. That and a shandy made with flat beer really says it all. Never again.

Stopped for lunch. Friendly staff. However were not told that they didnt have fresh produce, nor that they had run out of bread for sandwiches.

Waited over 20 mins for 2 rounds of prawn sandwiches - prawns had been quickly defrosted and were slightly warm once served.

A lovely village with ample parking. A big hotel complex but the pub lunch wasnt the best.

Really charming hotel with some nice little touches in room such as bottled water and homemade cookies and chilled milk on windowsill. Room 4 was clean and cosy. Breakfast was lovely and overall a great customer experience

Excellent 2 night stay.

Excellent 2 night stay.
Great cycle location for exploring the area.
Excellent food in both restaraunt and the bar, great big room in the old part of the hotel and really good service.
Would highly recommend it and will stay again when travelling to Devon / Cornwall border.

Lovely and friendly. The restaurant was a bit pricey however the food was very nice. Clean rooms and lounge every cosy. The only bad thing was not enough staff for breakfast on Sunday and therefore had to wait about an hour for our food but otherwise I would go back again.

Lovely hotel. Great location. The staff are professional and very helpful. The free WiFi had a great signal in the stable block where my room was. There is a restaurant and super lounge area. Less than 100 yards away is a local shop with all the basics you may need during your stay. The selection of tea in the room is quite extensive and the Tarka glass bottled water in the room is a nice touch. I had lovely weather when I was there and used the 'secret' garden to relax. There is also an old cocktail fighting pit which is used as a fishing shop in the garden but unfortunately I didn't manage to take any photos in there.
I hope you enjoy your stay at this lovely old hotel.

We had a lovely stay. The staff were polite, cheerful & attentive. The food was excellent and the atmosphere was restful. I think there should be some light background music in the dining room. We would go back again.

A really good hotel with amazing food I would definitely return and promote it to others however had to drop a star as my room had as few small issues. The staff tried hard to fix them so I'd otherwise have given a lower score but it does need a bit of tlc. I was in 24 in the stable block and the spotlights in the bed room were flickering badly so I told them the 1st night and they replaced one but they were still doing it the next night so the staff had to come and take one out. It helped for a while but then the others started so I just sat in the dark instead since it was now getting late.
The bedroom is really nicer but the tv could have been bigger. I don't usually watch it to be fair but it easy the Olympics. ... and the carpet has some bad stains. The bathroom let it down the most the door is very sticky and needed a whack to open and the tiles were heavily stained with excessive black mould in the grout and on the ceiling above ther shower. The shower was difficult to turn on and off without giving yourself an icy shock too so defo could do with bringing into line with the rest of the hotel as it is like I say beautiful and the staff very attentive.
Oh... one tip could you put more than 2 breakfast tea bags in the rooms as I and many others I heard ask for more which is a pain. Also the blue uht tastes worse then lower fat as the taint taste in uht comes from the fats oxidising in the heat process so I'd always offer semi or full skim (top tip from an ex diary worker). I did go and get and jug of proper milk both nights though so thanks for that :-)
I can't remember the last time I had evening meals and nd breakfast both be so good. Faultless food.
Thanks for a lovely stay.

Stop here quite regularly to charge my car. Would never have discovered it otherwise. Had a lovely meal in front of an open log fire. Just the tonic for the appalling weather outside. Highly recommended.
