Amazing institution. The 1840 gallery is one of the finest displays in the world with several iconic paintings such as Ophelia or Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose. It's also free to enter and considerably quieter than its sister museum (the Tate Modern).

Tate Commission (The Asset Strippers) very good. The Blake opaque to non-fans. The cafe cake massively overpriced. The volume of exhibition merchandise depressing and devaluing even a hard to like artist.

If you like classic pieces of art, you came to the right place. They have some special exhibitions which you would have to pay for, but the majority of artwork is free to see for everyone. They currently have the great works of William Turner :-)

Great Museum!

Great Museum!
I guess that it is not so popular because it's somewhat further away from the more touristic area, but it is as good as all the more popular ones.
I find it more compact than the other and more "linear" to transverse all its pieces.
The collection of Turner painting is really good and the description gives a clear background of the artist moment.
The Museum has plenty facilities to support all its visitors.
I recommend it to anyone looking to satiate your hunger for British classical art pieces.

Tate Britain is a fascinating museum (and a beautiful building) where curators try desperately to insert Britain into the European and global art narrative --many times to a comedic degree. Take the latest Van Gogh exhibit as an example: the display focuses tremendously on the few years that the artist spent in London working as a teenager, implying, almost, that some of Van Gogh's master pieces were only possible thanks to the muses of the Thames river.

Less crowded than its younger sister - that's a good thing - with a great collection of art and well presented exhibitions. Good for browsing. Don't miss the restaurant with the Whistler murals or a quiet drink in the outdoor courtyard

Tate Britain is a great museum, a tourist may think it looks a little off the beaten track but it is definitely worth a visit. They have a real range of artworks from classical paintings to changing modern exhibitions. The building itself is really nice and it's an opportunity to get away a little from the hustle and bustle of some of the other tourist destinations. You can get a boat between here and Tate Modern which is a nice thing to do.

British art across 300+ years. Some of the paintings are simply breathtaking, and the building itself is a wonderful space. Easy to miss some rooms, though, so take your time.
And do make sure you get to the Turner, Constable and Blake rooms - I was surprised by just how far ahead of their times their works are.

Magnificent exhibition of Impressionist paintings, assembled from the four corners of the world. Depictions of the turmoil and horrors of the Franco-Prussian war are in stark contrast to Monet's introspective views of the Houses of Parliament, languishing in the fog alongside the river Thames.

Rarely catch up with Van Gogh's special exhibition, experience the subway without air conditioning, patiently ask and navigate down to Knight. On the last day of the trip, continue reading history.

Just amazing place to visit. There is always something that I've not seen before and that is just in the free galleries. Not to mention the special exhibitions, for which there is a charge.
Then there is the tea lounge which is worth a visit for tea and cake or something cooked. I haven't visited the restaurant, which to be honest looks a bit out of my comfort zone. I'm sure it would be fine if it's your sort of thing.
All in all, worth a visit if you're interested in art or just visiting.

Great collection of British art, with organized and friendly staff. What is a pity is that poorly designed lighting, the highest frames can hardly be seen by the reflection of fluorescent lights.

Came for the Van Gogh exhibition. The exhibition was incorrectly described since at least 1/3 of the pictures were not by him. The rooms were unbearably hot and despite timed entrances it was too busy to enjoy.
